Book excerpt: Spain in the twentieth century gave birth to an array of astounding artistic and literary talent, including the passionately iconoclastic writer Federico Garcia Lorca. But his works were ill received in the homophobic atmosphere of institutionalized Spanish criticism. Because of this atmosphere, even today's critics have effectively marginalized and disavowed intimations of homo-affectivity and homoeroticism in the great Spanish works. This book first appeared in Spain in 1991 as counter-discourse against those prevailing ideological structures. Before its appearance, no significant work had focused on the position of Spanish culture towards homosexuality or on how homosexuality could affect the works of canonical writers. Engaging with homosexuality as an imperative source of meaning in artistic work, this volume rigorously studies the works of Federico Garcia Lorca and several of his marginalized homosexual contemporaries, including Emilio Prados, Luis Cernuda, Juan Gil-Albert, and Salvador Dali. The study relies on the textual evidence presented by these authors to define the homosexual culture as one plagued by the realities of rejection, fear of the law, self-doubts, the lack of an authorized language with which to convey emotions, the awareness of disgust around the individual, the need to accept marginality to find sexual or emotional satisfaction, and the knowledge of one's own social divergence, all of which have an enormous influence on any artist's work. With this new and updated translation, this work offers English-speaking readers the opportunity to focus on formal aspects of literary expressions of homosexuality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanism and Religion in Early Modern Spain brings together twenty-five essays by renowned historian Terence O’Reilly. The essays examine the interplay of religion and humanism in a series of writings composed in sixteenth-century Spain. It begins by presenting essential background: the coming together during the reign of the Emperor Charles V of Erasmian humanism and various movements of religious reform, some of them heterodox. It then moves on to the reign of Philip II, focusing on the mystical poetry and prose of St John of the Cross. It explores the influence on his writings of his humanist learning – classical, biblical and patristic. The third part of the book concerns a verse-epistle by John’s contemporary, Francisco de Aldana. One chapter presents the text with a parallel version in English, whilst two others trace its debt to Florentine Neoplatonism, particularly the thought of Marsilio Ficino. The final part is devoted to the humanism of the poet and Scripture scholar Luis de León, and specifically to the confluence in his work of biblical and classical motifs. This book is essential reading for scholars and students of early modern Spanish history, as well those interested in literary studies and the history of religion. (CS 1102).

Los catorce ensayos de este volumen conectan de una manera perceptible con el tema del movimiento enla poesía española del siglo de oro The fourteen essays of this volume engage in distinct ways with the matter of motion in early modern Spanish poetics, without limiting the dialectic of stasis and movement to any single sphere or manifestation. Interrogation of the interdependence of tradition and innovation, poetry, power and politics, shifting signifiers, the intersection of topography and deviant temporalities, the movement between the secular and the sacred, tensions between centres and peripheries, issues of manuscript circulation and reception, poetic calls and echoes across continents and centuries, and between creative writing and reading subjects, all demonstrate that Helgerson's central notion of conspicuous movement is relevant beyond early sixteenth-century secular poetics, By opening it up we approximate a better understanding of poetry's flexible spatio-temporal co-ordinates in a period of extraordinary historical circumstances and conterminous radical cultural transformation. Book excerpt: The book examines the use of mystical imagery in the literary works of the 16th-century Spanish writers and mystics, Santa Teresa de Jesus and San Juan de la Cruz. In addition to the variety of sources on which they draw and the influence they exercise on later generations, what emerges in the study is a multivalent use of diverse images that is the mystics' means of grappling with the ineffable nature of mystical union."

Book excerpt: The central component of this study is an index of the numerous motifs through which topoi of the text as symbol are articulated in the religious poetry, sermons, and sacramental plays of Golden Age Spain. Paired with the index is an anthology of the texts on which the book is based. In her introduction, Louise Salstad discusses the transmission and transformation of the topoi as they appear in the Old and New Testaments, classical literature, church writings, and medieval texts, and she considers the influence of the contemporary milieu on the shaping of these motifs. The book also includes an explanatory introduction to the index, biographical notes on authors, a chronology of works, a bibliography, and key word indexes of motifs in English and Spanish. The most extensive investigation of specific topoi undertaken in Spanish studies, this book will also be of interest to art historians and cultural historians whose focus is theology, the history of spirituality, or the history of the book.

Book excerpt: The works of Juan de la Cruz contains numerous passages dealing with human cognition both ordinary and mystical. This study traces San Juan's examination of the mystic's knowledge in and through God. The sixteenth-century Spanish thinker stresses that conditionality is a fundamental character of all human knowledge, and brings to light a complex movement of contiguity between one and another mode of cognitive activity. Also discussed is the expression, through the instruments of prose and poetry, of the mystic's supereminent and therefore ineffable experience of knowledge and love. Relying upon Juan de la Cruz's own texts, it is shown how a relative communication can be effected despite the barriers separating mystical from ordinary cognition.

Book excerpt: Using a context that is larger than a merely theological one, Bohm (Spanish, Tarleton State U.) translates and interprets selections from Angelus Silesius' 1657 collection of mystical poetry, Cherubinishcher Wandersmann. In addition to examining the historical background and the literature about Silesius, Bohm offers a lengthy discussion of the mystical tradition. She concludes that Silesius' wanderer angel is making a mystical, interior journey, and that Silesius' work falls into no particular genre and fits into no pre-existing closed system. No index.
