It has long been implicated in empire and its anxieties over difference. However, little attention has been paid to its twentieth-century genealogy. This book explores this neglected history through the work of Pierre Gourou, one of the century’s foremost purveyors of what anti-colonial writer Aimé Césaire dubbed tropicalité. It explores how Gourou’s interpretations of ‘the nature’ of the tropical world, and its innate difference from the temperate world, were built on the shifting sands of twentieth-century history – empire and freedom, modernity and disenchantment, war and revolution, culture and civilisation, and race and development. Pourquoi pareil spectre de positions à l'intérieur d'une même discipline (ici en géographie) et pareille diversité de pratiques entre disciplines ? Au-delà de la compétence technique nécessaire qui peut expliquer la fréquence et la virtuosité du recours à la cartographie d'une part, au-delà de l'intérêt pédagogique de la visualisation d'un discours abstrait d'autre part, se pose plus fondamentalement la question épistémologique de la valeur heuristique de la carte dans la production du savoir. Après un groupe de contributions introductives définissant des positions théoriques différentes, voire opposées, cet ouvrage développe la réflexion autour de quatre thèmes : 1) Commandes, productions et usages de la carte ; 2) Dénaturaliser les cartes : 1e pouvoir et l'autorité ; 3) Langage graphique et construction du savoir ; 4) Cartographier l'Autre. Il se poursuit par un groupe d'interrogations transversales sur les précurseurs du langage graphique de la cartographie statistique des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles ; sur la valeur rhétorique de 1a carte, les modalités collectives de construction de l'identité et de l'altérité et des politiques publiques territoriales ; à propos des politiques urbaines, sur la force de l'instrument graphique et en même temps sa difficulté, voire son incapacité, à dire la complexité du social. En depit des progres accomplis en matiere d'acces a l'education, les recentes evaluations des acquis scolaires revelent que de nombreux jeunes a travers le monde, particulierement ceux qui sont issus des couches pauvres ou marginalisees de la population, quittent l'ecole sans avoir acquis ne seraient-ce que les competences necessaires a la vie. En meme temps, des evaluationsscolaires comparables sur le plan international montrent que les competences disponibles dans de nombreux pays a revenu intermediaire sont nettement inferieures a ce que ces pays ambitionnent. Et trop souvent, ces lacunes sont cachees - par consequent, pour faire face a la crise de l'apprentissage, il est crucial de commencer par la mettre en lumiere en ameliorant l'evaluation des acquis des eleves.Comment mettre l'ecole au service de l'ensemble des apprenants ? Les travaux de recherche sur le cerveau, l'innovation pedagogique et la gestion des etablissements scolaires, entre autres, ont identifie des interventions qui favorisent l'apprentissage en faisant en sorte que les apprenants soient mieux prepares, que les enseignants soient a la fois competents et motives, et que d'autres moyens soient mis en oeuvre pour soutenir larelation entre l'enseignant et l'apprenant.Comment faire en sorte que le systeme favorise l'apprentissage ? Pour realiser les objectifs d'apprentissage a travers le systeme educatif dans son ensemble, il ne suffit pas de transposer a plus grande echelle les interventions efficaces. Les pays doivent aussi surmonter des obstacles techniques et politiques en ayant recours a des outils de mesure et indicateurs suffisamment parlants pour mobiliser les acteurs concernes etsuivre les progres, en formant des coalitions au service de l'apprentissage et en adoptant une approche de reforme evolutive.
