Book Synopsis Sisters in Blue/Hermanas de Azul by : Anna M. Nogar
Download or read book Sisters in Blue/Hermanas de Azul written by Anna M. Nogar and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sisters in Blue tells the story of two young women--one Spanish, one Puebloan--meeting across space and time. Sor María de Jesús de Ágreda, New Mexico's famous Lady in Blue, is said to have traveled to New Mexico in the seventeenth century. Here Anna M. Nogar and Enrique R. Lamadrid bring her to life, imagining an encounter between a Pueblo woman and Sor María during the nun's mystical spiritual journeys. Tales of Sor María, who described traveling across the earth and the heavens, have traditionally presented her as an evangelist who helped bring Catholicism to the Pueblos. Instead this book, which includes an essay providing historical context, shows a connection between Sor María and her friend Paf Sheuri. The two women find more similarities than differences in their shared experiences, and what they learn from each other has an impact for centuries to come.

Download or read book On the Road to Baghdad, Or, Traveling Biculturalism written by Gönül Pultar and published by New Academia Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2005 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book This is a collection of essays on fiction written in English, Spanish, and Bengali that has emerged recently. This fiction is seen to reflect biculturalism, that is the amalgam of two cultures that are both hegemonic in their own ways. This approach provides insight into the works discussed by uncovering elements of the the seemingly "other," non-Euroculture, and elevates both cultures to the same level. Authors discussed in the essays include: Black British Caryl Phillips, Chicana Sandra Cisneros, Chinese American Maxine Hong Kingston, Cuban American Dolores Prida, Danish Izak Dinesen, Greek Americans Nikos Papandreou and Catherine Temma Davidson, Kenyan Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Japanese American John Okada, New Zealander Patricia Grace, Peruvian José Maria Arguedas, Turkish American Güneli Gün, and contemporary English-language Indian authors Vikram Chandra, Chitra B. Divakaruni, Attia Hosain, Manju Kapur, Arundhati Roy, Salman Rushdie, as well as Rabindranath Tagore. Praise "Perhaps only a decade ago, such an ambitious, world-spanning project would have seemed absurd outside a congress of anthropologists or bankers. Today, it represents a state-of-the-art sensibility reflecting the efforts of an equally vari- ous geocultural assembly of scholars. The implications for a community of readers not only interested in but competently sensitive to such far-flung narrative geographies is equally stunning." - William Boelhower, University of Padua. Italy. Author of Through a Glass Darkly, Ethnic Semiosis in American Literature.

Book Synopsis Guillén on Guillén by : Jorge Guillén
Download or read book Guillén on Guillén written by Jorge Guillén and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jorge Guillén is one of Spain's most important and productive poets of the twentieth century; yet though recently honored with prestigious literary prizes in Spain, Italy, and the United States, he remains little known in this country. This selection of his poetry and his commentary on the poems comprise an extraordinary introduction of the poet to an English-speaking audience. Ranging over the nearly sixty years of Guillén's poetic career, this anthology consists of the poet's own selection of forty-one poems that represent for him the coherence and unity of his life's work. His commentary on each poem explains its place and significance in this context. With the original Spanish and the English translations on facing pages, the anthology proceeds thematically. The poet asks us to consider the architecture of his work as a whole, and not necessarily his development as a poet. At Guillén's invitation, the translators visited him at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where they taped the poet reading and talking about his poetry for more than five hours. Guillén on Guillén is the edited transcript of that meeting. Originally published in 1979. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
Book Synopsis El viajero de cercanías by : William Henry Hudson
Download or read book El viajero de cercanías written by William Henry Hudson and published by Erasmus Ediciones. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This autobiographical novel on the life of the brilliant Belgian inventor Marcel Demeulenare and his wife Simonetta narrates the fabled story, set between the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th, of the couple during their years in Spain, turned into happy misfits who travel as jugglers and animal tamers giving entertainment shows in cities throughout the peninsula. Through their delicious dialogues, the reader will be able to learn about and delve into the advanced philosophy of this great woman of the 20th century and the great ideas of the great Flemish engineer, inventor of important technical systems. The real life that Simonetta and Marcel led during their unexpected stay in the Spanish city of Cuenca throughout the 1970s was the inspiration for this novel. The original manuscript, unpublished until the publication of this edition, was donated by Simonetta as a sign of recognition and gratitude to the International Museum of Electrography -today MIDECIANT- of Cuenca, whose officials had invited her to its inauguration in 1990. This edition rescues the original manuscript, incorporates its translation into Spanish and includes the rest of the original documents donated by Simonetta. To which has been added the textual and visual documentation of some of the original documents related to the fascinating life and important inventions by Marcel Demeulenaere. This publication offers not only the pleasure of reading a wonderful novel, full of life lessons and inspiration, but also becomes an invaluable document for future investigations and can shed a light on the history of the technical evolution of the 20th century that has collaborated in the creation of the current digital society.

Download or read book Pepita Jimenez: a Novel by Juan Valera written by Juan Valera and published by Hispanic Classics. This book was released on 2012 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Juan Valera y Alcalá-Galiano (1824-1905), one of 19th-century Spain's most well known authors, had a career in the diplomatic service with postings in Europe and the Americas. A serious student of his own and foreign literatures, Valera wrote novels, short stories, essays and literary criticism. Fluent in a number of languages, he also translated Longus's Daphne and Chloe from Greek into Spanish. The unifying thread of his creative work is "art for art's sake," that is, beauty as the end and purpose of imaginative literature, an ideal epitomised by Pepita Jiménez , long considered one of the best half dozen novels of 19th-century Spain. When it was first published in 1874, Pepita Jiménez became an instant success. Translations abound, as do the number of editions, upwards of fifteen, many of them annotated, some of them illustrated. It tells of Luis de Vargas, a devout twenty-two-year-old seminarian who has come home to visit with his father before entering the priesthood. The storyline unfolds when he meets a comely twenty-year-old widow named Pepita Jiménez and has his religious calling put to the test. On the heels of a fictitious prologue, Valera gives the reader multiple perspectives. The first part of the novel is epistolary in form, letters that Luis writes to the Dean, who is both his uncle and his mentor at the seminary, and everything - people, places, and activities - is filtered through his eyes. The second part reverts to the traditional all-seeing narrator of the realist novel, while the third consists of letters that Pedro de Vargas, Luis's father, writes to his brother the Dean.
