In the social arena, the articles encompass the evolution of the family, benefits for the elderly, the education system, and the social implications of graffiti. The changing nature of French identity is brought to light through an analysis of the press and the debate on multiculturalism. A review of cultural issues includes the notion of leisure, the contemporary social novel, the cosmopolitan tradition in French film, and new cultural spaces. The work concludes with perceptions of France from the United States as seen through diplomatic relations and remakes of french films, and a final essay on France. Book Synopsis Practiced Citizenship by : Nimisha Barton
Download or read book Practiced Citizenship written by Nimisha Barton and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over fifty years ago sociologist T. H. Marshall first opened the modern debate about the evolution of full citizenship in modern nation-states, arguing that it proceeded in three stages: from civil rights, to political rights, and finally to social rights. The shortcomings of this model were clear to feminist scholars. As political theorist Carol Pateman argued, the modern social contract undergirding nation-states was from the start premised on an implicit "sexual contract." According to Pateman, the birth of modern democracy necessarily resulted in the political erasure of women. Since the 1990s feminist historians have realized that Marshall's typology failed to describe adequately developments that affected women in France. An examination of the role of women and gender in welfare-state development suggested that social rights rooted in republican notions of womanhood came early and fast for women in France even while political and economic rights would continue to lag behind. While their considerable access to social citizenship privileges shaped their prospects, the absence of women's formal rights still dominates the conversation. Practiced Citizenship offers a significant rereading of that narrative. Through an analysis of how citizenship was lived, practiced, and deployed by women in France in the modern period, Practiced Citizenship demonstrates how gender normativity and the resulting constraints placed on women nevertheless created opportunities for a renegotiation of the social and sexual contract.
Book Synopsis Political Representation in France by : Philip E. Converse
Download or read book Political Representation in France written by Philip E. Converse and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There can scarcely be a greater tribute to the vitality of the Fifth Republic's democracy than this monumental work. A searching analysis of how the will of the voters is translated into authoritative political decision making, this book not only uncovers political truths about contemporary France but also provides a model for the study of other popular forms of government. The authors set out to find an answer to the perplexing question of how representative government operates in France in the seemingly unstable context of multiparties. By interviewing voters as well as legislators in 1967 and in 1968 after the great upheaval, and by monitoring policies of the National Assembly from 1967 to 1973, the authors test relationships between public opinion and decision making. They are able to sort out the abiding political cues that orient the French voter, to establish the normal electoral processes, to gauge the nature of mass perceptions of the political options available to voters, and to interpret the strikes, riots, and demonstrations of 1968 as a channel of communication parallel to the electoral process itself. Lucid in style, methodologically sophisticated, and often comparative in approach, Political Representation in France is a seminal work for political scientists, sociologists, and historians.
