Book excerpt: Both realism and justice demand that efforts to conserve biological diversity address human needs as well. The most promising hope of accomplishing such a goal lies in locally based conservation efforts -- an approach that seeks ways to make local communities the beneficiaries and custodians of conservation efforts. Natural Connections focuses on rural societies and the conservation of biodiversity in rural areas. It represents the first systematic analysis of locally based efforts, and includes a comprehensive examination of cases from around the world where the community-based approach is used. The book provides: an overview of community-based conservation in the context of the debate over sustainable development, poverty, and environmental decline case studies from the developed and developing worlds -- Indonesia, Peru, Australia, Zimbabwe, Costa Rica, the United Kingdom -- that present detailed examples of the locally based approach to conservation a review of the principal issues arising from community-based programs an agenda for future action

Book Synopsis Indigenous Development in the Andes by : Robert Andolina
Download or read book Indigenous Development in the Andes written by Robert Andolina and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-23 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As indigenous peoples in Latin America have achieved greater prominence and power, international agencies have attempted to incorporate the agendas of indigenous movements into development policymaking and project implementation. Transnational networks and policies centered on ethnically aware development paradigms have emerged with the goal of supporting indigenous cultures while enabling indigenous peoples to access the ostensible benefits of economic globalization and institutionalized participation. Focused on Bolivia and Ecuador, Indigenous Development in the Andes is a nuanced examination of the complexities involved in designing and executing “culturally appropriate” development agendas. Robert Andolina, Nina Laurie, and Sarah A. Radcliffe illuminate a web of relations among indigenous villagers, social movement leaders, government officials, NGO workers, and staff of multilateral agencies such as the World Bank. The authors argue that this reconfiguration of development policy and practice permits Ecuadorian and Bolivian indigenous groups to renegotiate their relationship to development as subjects who contribute and participate. Yet it also recasts indigenous peoples and their cultures as objects of intervention and largely fails to address fundamental concerns of indigenous movements, including racism, national inequalities, and international dependencies. Andean indigenous peoples are less marginalized, but they face ongoing dilemmas of identity and agency as their fields of action cross national boundaries and overlap with powerful institutions. Focusing on the encounters of indigenous peoples with international development as they negotiate issues related to land, water, professionalization, and gender, Indigenous Development in the Andes offers a comprehensive analysis of the diverse consequences of neoliberal development, and it underscores crucial questions about globalization, governance, cultural identity, and social movements.
Book Synopsis Gestión cultural para el desarrollo by : Editorial Planeta S.A.U.
Download or read book Gestión cultural para el desarrollo written by Editorial Planeta S.A.U. and published by Grupo Planeta Spain. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Research and Inequality by : Beth Humphries
Download or read book Research and Inequality written by Beth Humphries and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been noted by researchers from a variety of backgrounds that the dominant social research paradigms have frequently failed to represent the viewpoints of many marginalized groups. The authors of this collection confront this imbalance by looking at how issues such as ethnicity, sexual orientation and identity, disability, gender and ethnicity, and health and old age can be addressed in research conducted among groups who may often be the objects of research, but who seldom have control over what is said about them. Containing sections written by contributors from a variety of backgrounds, cultures and nationalities, the chapters explore ways in which issues of social diversity and division within the research process might be addressed. While considering whether this might be done through an emancipatory research paradigm, the book also examines the philosophical tenets and methodological implications of such an approach.

Book Synopsis Metabolismo Cultural Como Estrategia para Preservar la Identidad Cultural y EcolÓGica by : Reinhard Senkowski
Download or read book Metabolismo Cultural Como Estrategia para Preservar la Identidad Cultural y EcolÓGica written by Reinhard Senkowski and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
