Book excerpt: On October 14-19, 1990, the 6th International Conference on the Conservation of Earthen Architecture was held in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Sponsored by the GCI, the Museum of New Mexico State Monuments, ICCROM, CRATerre-EAG, and the National Park Service, under the aegis of US/ICOMOS, the event was organized to promote the exchange of ideas, techniques, and research findings on the conservation of earthen architecture. Presentations at the conference covered a diversity of subjects, including the historic traditions of earthen architecture, conservation and restoration, site preservation, studies in consolidation and seismic mitigation, and examinations of moisture problems, clay chemistry, and microstructures. In discussions that focused on the future, the application of modern technologies and materials to site conservation was urged, as was using scientific knowledge of existing structures in the creation of new, low-cost, earthen architecture housing.

Book Synopsis Public Procurement Reform and Governance in Africa by : S.N. Nyeck
Download or read book Public Procurement Reform and Governance in Africa written by S.N. Nyeck and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an interdisciplinary exploration of the governance of public procurement reform in Africa. Through a bottom-up approach to case studies and comparative analyses, scholars, practitioners, and social activists write about the organizational mechanisms and implementation gaps in public procurement governance in light of the general premises of national reform. Reforming the ways in which government purchases works, goods, and services from the private sector is one of the most sweeping policy reform undertaken in Africa in the past decade. Despite the transnational scope of policy change, very little is known about the mechanisms of public procurement governance at the subnational level. The argument in this volume is that policy reforms that mitigate contractual hazards along the three-dimensional “law-politics-business matrix” are more likely to bring about meaningful institutional transformation and broader social accountability. Key to substantive transformation of public procurement is the revitalization and professionalization of the public sector to meet the opportunities and challenges of development by contract.

Book Synopsis The Governance Discourse by : Bidyut Chakrabarty
Download or read book The Governance Discourse written by Bidyut Chakrabarty and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume aims to understand the concept of governance in its most complex manifestation and to identify its theoretical roots in the 'neo-liberal' mode of thinking cutting across different sub-disciplines in social sciences. It fills gaps in the available literature that tend to reduce governance to just another mode of public administration undermining the ideological challenges in the era of globalization. The volume has two interconnected parts: the first deals with the conceptual articulation of governance while the second is devoted to study the phenomenon empirically. The essays together with the introduction provide a critical analysis of the governance paradigm, which is concerned not only with the reform in public administration but also identifies new areas of research of a multi-disciplinary nature. By drawing attention to the changes in the theoretical domain of public administration-the study is both a comprehensive review of the available literature and also a quest for 'new' directions in the discipline.

Book Synopsis Risk Habitat Megacity by : Dirk Heinrichs
Download or read book Risk Habitat Megacity written by Dirk Heinrichs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-09 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Megacity development and the inherent risks and opportunities for humans and the environment is a theme of growing urgency in the 21st century. Focusing on Latin America where urbanization is most advanced, this book studies the complexity of a ‘mega-urban system’ and explores interrelations between sectors and issues by providing an in-depths study of one particular city, Santiago de Chile. The book attempts to (i) focus on the emergence of risk in megacities by analyzing risk elements, (ii) evaluate the extent and severity of risks, (iii) develop strategies to cope with adverse risks, and (iv) to guide urban development by combining concepts with empirical evidence. Drawing on the work of an interdisciplinary and international consortium of academic and professional partners, the book is written for scholars in cross-cutting areas of urban, sustainability, hazard, governance and planning research as well as practitioners from local, regional and international organizations.

Book Synopsis Entrepreneurial Selves by : Carla Freeman
Download or read book Entrepreneurial Selves written by Carla Freeman and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entrepreneurial Selves is an ethnography of neoliberalism. Bridging political economy and affect studies, Carla Freeman turns a spotlight on the entrepreneur, a figure saluted across the globe as the very embodiment of neoliberalism. Steeped in more than a decade of ethnography on the emergent entrepreneurial middle class of Barbados, she finds dramatic reworkings of selfhood, intimacy, labor, and life amid the rumbling effects of political-economic restructuring. She shows us that the déjà vu of neoliberalism, the global hailing of entrepreneurial flexibility and its concomitant project of self-making, can only be grasped through the thickness of cultural specificity where its costs and pleasures are unevenly felt. Freeman theorizes postcolonial neoliberalism by reimagining the Caribbean cultural model of 'reputation-respectability.' This remarkable book will allow readers to see how the material social practices formerly associated with resistance to capitalism (reputation) are being mobilized in ways that sustain neoliberal precepts and, in so doing, re-map class, race, and gender through a new emotional economy.
