Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book is must reading . . . although it will at times shock and perhaps even offend the sensibilities of traditional therapists.” —American Journal of Psychiatry This book brings together Erich Fromm’s basic statements on the application of psychoanalytic theory to social dynamics. At the same time, it offers an image of man consonant with the hopes of radical humanism. The Crisis of Psychoanalysis is a collection of nine brilliant essays. Although his work is deeply rooted in Freudian theory, Fromm further develops Freud’s doctrines by including both social and ethical dimensions, and applies his discoveries and insights to address the problems we face in society at large. “This collection is a fine representative sampling from a lucid, humane, always attractive writer.” —Kirkus Reviews “Highly recommended.” —Library Journal

Book Synopsis The Crisis in Psychoanalysis by : Ahmed Fayek
Download or read book The Crisis in Psychoanalysis written by Ahmed Fayek and published by BookPros, LLC. This book was released on 2010 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of psychoanalysis is on the brink of extinction. With the declining numbers of classical analysts, the field has become inundated with mediocre theories, making it difficult to discern what psychoanalysis really is. In The Crisis in Psychoanalysis, Dr. Ahmed Fayek traces the destruction of psychoanalysis to the decline of Freudian doctrine, and proposes that only through a rediscovery of the core principles that make up of Freudian doctrine - principles that Freud himself did not adequately articulate - can this crisis be resolved. With experience as both a practitioner and a training and supervising analyst, Fayek offers scholars and members of the psychoanalytic community a comprehensive account of the state of the field - past and present - and paves the way for the rebirth of a lost doctrine.

Book Synopsis Genres of Listening by : Xochitl Marsilli-Vargas
Download or read book Genres of Listening written by Xochitl Marsilli-Vargas and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-08 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Genres of Listening Xochitl Marsilli-Vargas explores a unique culture of listening and communicating in Buenos Aires. She traces how psychoanalytic listening circulates beyond the clinical setting to become a central element of social interaction and cultural production in the city that has the highest number of practicing psychologists and psychoanalysts in the world. Marsilli-Vargas develops the concept of genres of listening to demonstrate that hearers listen differently, depending on where, how, and to whom they are listening. In particular, she focuses on psychoanalytic listening as a specific genre. Porteños (citizens of Buenos Aires) have developed a “psychoanalytic ear” that emerges during conversational encounters in everyday interactions in which participants offer different interpretations of the hidden meaning the words carry. Marsilli-Vargas does not analyze these interpretations as impositions or interruptions but as productive exchanges. By outlining how psychoanalytic listening operates as a genre, Marsilli-Vargas opens up ways to imagine other modes of listening and forms of social interaction.

Book Synopsis On Freud's "The Question of Lay Analysis" by : Paulo Cesar Sandler
Download or read book On Freud's "The Question of Lay Analysis" written by Paulo Cesar Sandler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The questions of what psychoanalysis is, and does, and who can and should practice it, remains key within the modern profession. Has the invaluable material packed into Freud’s The Question of Lay Analysis (1926) been underestimated by contemporary psychoanalysis? This book explores how the issues raised in this paper can continue to impact contemporary Freudian theory and practice. The chapters examine why the arguably litigious nature of the paper might be contributing to its neglect and underestimation. The editors of this book put forth a hypothesis: is there an underlying, still unrecognized, but heartrending factor underlying the century-old quarrel between "lay analysts" and what might be described as medically or psychiatrically trained analysts? They then brought together a selection of major contemporary psychoanalytic thinkers from around the world to attempt to bridge the seemingly unbridgeable gap between medical and non-medical analysis, using The Question of Lay Analysis as a central pivot. The work of the key figure, in social and historic terms, on this issue, Theodor Reik, is also duly honoured. On Freud’s "The Question of Lay Analysis" will be of great interest to all psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists.
Book Synopsis The Social Work Psychoanalyst's Casebook by : Joyce Edward
Download or read book The Social Work Psychoanalyst's Casebook written by Joyce Edward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Work Psychoanalyst's Casebook begins with an interview with Dr. Sanville, who reflects on her evolution as a social work analyst, theoretician, writer, teacher, and leader. These reminiscences are followed by accounts of nine analytic treatments, each of which offers an unusual window into what actually transpired between analyst and analysand during the treatment hours. These case studies concern particularly troubled, often traumatized patients-the very "hard to reach" or "difficult to treat" clients with whom social workers have long been familiar. They include a reanalysis by the same analyst of a patient whose first therapy ended in a stalemate; an account of transference and countertransference phenomena during termination; a report on the analysis of a young woman who experienced both chronic and stress-related trauma; and an account of the special issues involved in the treatment of an aging woman. Most of the case studies reflect the influence of Dr. Sanville, whose work has long evinced the therapeutic imagination and disciplined creativity to which all the contributors aspire. Tthe contributors to this volume offer the salutary reminder that analytic work is built on a relationship of respect and empathy and that treatment success follows from the therapist's willingness to accommodate the unique needs of individual patients. In honoring Jean Sanville, The Social Work Psychoanalyst's Casebook speaks to the robustness of a multidisciplinary approach to psychopathology that transcends the bounds of any single profession-an approach in which contemporary psychoanalysis is enlarged by the insights and emphases of social work just as social work is enriched by the clinical wisdom of psychoanalysis.
