Book excerpt: "... oggi Genova ci interessa [...] non tanto per la fisicità della sua architettura (e ce n'e' di buona, anche moderna e contemporanea), quanto per la vivacità della sua cultura progettuale. Anche in un contesto come quello Nord Americano, al quale noi come Kent State University ci rivolgiamo in modo particolare, dove i rapporti con storia, geografi a e culture hanno ovviamente tempi, scale, nature e modi assai diversi, il caso Genova può ancora emergere come modello da studiare per la sua complessità e intelligenza progettuale = ...Genoa interests us today [...] not so much for the physicality of its architecture (and there are very good examples, also modern and contemporary) as for the liveliness of its planning culture. Even in a context like that of North America, which we at Kent State Unviersity look at with a special eye, where the relations with history, geography and cultures obviously are marked by very different times, scales, natures, and ways of doing things, the case of Genoa can emerge as a model to be studied for the complexity and intelligence of its design"--Page 4 of cover.
Book Synopsis Architectures of the Roman World by : Niccolò Mugnai
Download or read book Architectures of the Roman World written by Niccolò Mugnai and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects essays by international scholars who engage with Roman-period architecture outside Rome and the Italian Peninsula, looking at the regions that formed part of the Roman Empire over a broad time frame: from the second century BCE to the third century CE. Moving beyond traditional views of ‘Roman provincial architecture’, the aim is to highlight the multi-faceted features of these architectures, their function, impact and significance within the local cultures, and the dynamic discourse between periphery and center. Architecture is intended in the broad sense of the term, encompassing the buildings’ technological components as well as their ornamental and epigraphic apparatuses. The geographic framework under examination is a broad one: along with well-documented areas of the ancient Mediterranean, attention is also paid to the territories of north-west Europe. The discussion throughout the volume focuses on three interrelated themes – models, agency, and reception. The broader scope of these essays is to give a reinvigorated impetus to the scholarly debate on the role and influence of ancient architectures beyond the center of Empire. The book has a strong interdisciplinary character, which reflects the authors’ diverse expertise in the fields of archaeology, architecture, ancient history, art and architectural history.

Book Synopsis Urban Heritage Management by : Anna Maria Colavitti
Download or read book Urban Heritage Management written by Anna Maria Colavitti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the in-depth relationship between historic-cultural heritage and landscape, urban, and regional planning. It analyzes recent cultural and discipline positions and addresses research to interpret legacy values and the necessity for conservation within the urban setting. It also presents a method that helps urban planners to implement the suggestions, based on extensive knowledge of topographic methods and urban archaeology, to enhance the shaping and planning of the historic and present-day city. A rapid evolution of techniques and methods that provide innovative planning instruments and contribute to conservation projects involving cities and territories is now being witnessed in urban planning. Actors involved in the planning process use an organic and multidisciplinary vision of techniques and methods to understand the relation between the historic-cultural goods and their settlement context. Through urban archaeology it is now possible to orient—in a systematic way—interventions in the historic centers of European cities and document the origin and evolution of the urban shape, to reconcile renewal demand and preservation of ancient heritage.

Download or read book PAD #13 written by Marina Parente and published by LetteraVentidue Edizioni. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue, edited by Marina Parente and Carla Sedini, founder of D4T - Design for Territories Research Network of Politecnico di Milano, aims to contribute to this new field of study helping readers understand the design-led phenomenon, which involves the tangible resources of a territory (like monumental and landscape heritage) as well as the intangible ones (like cultural identity and people values). The main topic of this issue is: How could the design develop the local dimension enhancing and revitalizing the territory at the same time? Furthermore, with issue #13 we are opening a series with artists’ images that will match the articles with a visual research connected to the proposed subject. Photographer Carla Sedini, co-editor with Marina Parente of this issue, gave us permission to publish a selection of images about “design that is not there”, “design that may be” and “tacit design” within urban territories around the world. We hope that many creatives will interpret the “Suggestions for Design” launched here. The numerous contributors to this issue are: Miriam Bicocca; Letizia Bollini; Marco Borsotti & Sonia Pistidda; Raffaella Fagnoni & Silvia Pericu; Davide Fassi, Laura Galluzzo & Anna Linda De Rosa; Rosanna Gaddi; Helena Gentili & Daria Casciani; José Luis González Cabrero, Ana Margarita Avila Ochoa, Ana Calvera, Debora Giorgi, Yosser Halloul, Insaf Khaled & Rosa Povedano; Maria Antonietta Sbordone; Reham Mohsen & Andreas Sicklinger; Carla Sedini & Luca Fois.

Book Synopsis Urban Regionalisation Processes by : Francesco Lo Piccolo
Download or read book Urban Regionalisation Processes written by Francesco Lo Piccolo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the issues of transformation phenomena of the urban dimension (regionalization processes) that traditional scientific literature fails to describe appropriately. So far, scholars have adopted a widespread dominant perspective that proved unable to grasp the essence of post-modern complexities that urban spaces imply. The book provides a taxonomy, in order to describe the rules of these new and peculiar cities, by using the living dimension as a device for the epistemological breaking down of traditional socio-spatial analyses. After a thorough theoretical introduction, it describes two Sicilian case studies that prove particularly relevant to the construction of a new, alternative urban regionalization theory. These two areas, Palermo and South-Eastern Sicily, are described through several aspects, such as the role of migrants and migrations in defining urban regionalization, the power of fiction and the new urban forms that are slowly emerging in Sicily. Overall, this book provides a refreshing view of what Sicily has been and is becoming, by deconstructing most of its clichés and suggesting theoretical perspectives grounded in both quantitative and qualitative analyses.
