Book Synopsis China's Uncertain Future by : Jean-Luc Domenach
Download or read book China's Uncertain Future written by Jean-Luc Domenach and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on his experience as a scholar and diplomat stationed in China, Jean-Luc Domenach consults a wealth of archival and contemporary materials to examine ChinaÕs place in the world. A sympathetic yet critical observer, Domenach brings his intimate knowledge of the country to bear on a range of crucial issues, such as the growth (or deterioration) of ChinaÕs economy, the governmentÕs ever-delayed democratization, the potential outcomes of a national political crisis, and the possible escalation of a revamped authoritarianism. Domenach ultimately reads ChinaÕs current progress as a set of easy accomplishments presaging a more difficult era of development. His finely nuanced analysis captures the difficult decisions now confronting ChinaÕs elite, who are under tremendous pressure to support an economy based on innovation and consumption, establish a political system based on law and popular participation, rethink their national identity and spatial organization, and define a more positive approach to the worldÕs problems. These leaders are also besieged by corruption among their ranks, an increasingly restless urban population, and a sharp decline in the countryÕs demographic growth. Domenach taps into these anxieties and the attempt to alleviate them, revealing a China much less confident and secure than many would believe.

Book Synopsis Will China Democratize? by : Andrew J. Nathan
Download or read book Will China Democratize? written by Andrew J. Nathan and published by Johns Hopkins University Press+ORM. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading experts on China offer their enlightening analysis on one of the most crucial and complex questions facing the future of international politics. Moving toward open markets and international trade has brought extraordinary economic success to China, yet its leadership still maintains an authoritarian grip over its massive population. From repressing political movements to controlling internet traffic, China’s undemocratic policies present an attractive model for other authoritarian regimes. But can China continue its growth without political reform? In Will China Democratize?, Andrew J. Nathan, Larry Diamond, and Marc F. Plattner present valuable analysis for anyone wondering if, when or how China might evolve politically. Since the Journal of Democracy’s very first issue in January 1990, which featured articles reflecting on the then-recent Tiananmen Square massacre, the Journal has regularly published articles about China and its politics. By bringing together the wide spectrum of views that have appeared in the Journal’s pages—from contributors including Fang Lizhi, Perry Link, Michel Oksenberg, Minxin Pei, Henry S. Rowen, and Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo— Will China Democratize? provides a clear view of the complex forces driving change in China’s regime and society.
Book Synopsis Post-Western Revolution in Sociology by : Laurence Roulleau-Berger
Download or read book Post-Western Revolution in Sociology written by Laurence Roulleau-Berger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within a movement towards the circulation and globalisation of knowledge, new centres and new peripheries form and new hierarchies appear - more or less discretely - producing competition and rivalry in the development of “new” knowledge. Centres of gravity in social sciences have been displaced towards Asia, especially China. We have entered a period of de-westernization of knowledge and co-production of transnational knowledge. This is a scientific revolution in the social sciences which imposes detours, displacements, reversals. It means a turning point in the history of social sciences. From the Chinese experience in sociology the author is opening a Post-Western Space where after Post-Colonial Studies, she is speaking about the emergence of a Post-Western Sociology.
