Book Synopsis The Cyclic Relations of the Chanson de Willame by : Theodore Ely Hamilton
Download or read book The Cyclic Relations of the Chanson de Willame written by Theodore Ely Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 1911 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Its object is to examine the Chanson de Willame and various related sources and to compare the latter, both with one another and with the Willmne. These comparisons will include many minor points of resemblance and difference, but the special aim will be to derive from such comparisons more general conclusions in regard to the cyclic relations of the chansons. The plan which will be followed is to give for each source, first, a resume and, second, critical notes upon the same. The resumes, though calculated to give good general views of the sources treated, are intended particularly to bring out points of special interest for discussion and cyclic comparison. Finally, there will be, at the close of the paper, a more general argument in regard to the probable origins of the legends and the development and cyclic relations of the sources studied. The sources which especially receive attention in this paper are, in addition to the Chanson de Willame: Foucon de Candie, Le Sto'fie N erbonesi, Aliscans, Les Enfances Vivien, and La C hevalerie V ivien. They are taken up in the order indicated.

Book Synopsis The Cycle of Guillaume D'Orange Or Garin de Monglane by : Philip E. Bennett
Download or read book The Cycle of Guillaume D'Orange Or Garin de Monglane written by Philip E. Bennett and published by Tamesis Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bibliography of all works, not only on the full cycle but also on Le Chanson de Guillaume and the Geste de Monglane. This is the first comprehensive critical bibliography of the Old French epic cycle of Guillaume d'Orange. As well as covering editions and studies of the twenty principal poems of the full cycle, including fragments, the bibliography includes works on La Chanson de Guillaume, the fifteenth-century prose romance derived from the cycle, and the four poems conserved only in the so-called Geste de Monglane. It offers exhaustive coverage of material published between the mid-nineteenth century and the year 2000, including book reviews. As well as listing and commenting on editions and studies of individual poems the bibliography has sections dealing with manuscript studies, studies of the cycle as a whole and groups of poems, thematic studies of characters, motifs, geography and history related to the poems. For ease of consultation it is completed by an index of scholars and an index of authors, titles and themes. PHILIP BENNETT is Reader in French, Edinburgh University.

Book Synopsis Rennewart in Wolfram's 'Willehalm' by : Carl Lofmark
Download or read book Rennewart in Wolfram's 'Willehalm' written by Carl Lofmark and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1972-08-24 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wolfram von Eschenbach's Willehalm and the Old French chanson de geste, La Bataille d'Aliscans, on which it was based, recount the tale of how Guillaume de'Orange eventually defeated the Saracens at the battle of Aliscans. This 1972 book examines Wolfram's use of his source material, concentrating on the episodes in which Rennewart figures. He discusses the theories about the original source of Rainouart in the French chansons de geste, and suggests that the figure sprang from traditional fairy tales, and was incorporated into the courtly cycle, in which he assorts rather oddly with the other characters, threatening to take over centre stage from the primary hero, Guillaume. He indicates the ways in which Wolfram made his poem a more consistent narrative by relegating Rennewart to his proper place, and giving him some of the courtly virtues expected of a hero by his audience. Finally, he considers whether Willehalm is a fragment.
Book Synopsis Image and Imagination by : Sandra Malicote
Download or read book Image and Imagination written by Sandra Malicote and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2010 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in-depth interdisciplinary study of word and image in the Old French chanson degeste, Image and Imagination: Picturing the Old French Epic examines the fascinating relationship between illumination and epic narrative constructed by the medieval understanding of the imagination. The study focuses on the epic cycle known as "the geste of Saint Gille," including Aiol and Elie de Saint Gille. The poems in manuscript were produced in the context of the opulent francophone Flemish courts of the mid-to-late thirteenth century. The manuscript (known as BNF fr 25516) is richly illuminated, and the study includes the popular Beuves de Hanstone, forerunner of Shakespeare's Hamlet, and the poem Robert le Diable, later becoming meyerbeer's celebrated opera. Concluding with the comparative study of BNF fr 24403's epic treatment of the only illuminated version of Chretien de Troyes' first Arthurian work, Erec et Enide, and the Sancti Bertini version of La Chevalerie Vivien, the first dated collection of epics made for a prominent northern Bishop, this study introduces the hitherto little-explored world of medieval illumination and epic narrative poetics. Book excerpt: Exploring how the depiction of otherness or alterity during the Middle Ages became problematic in the aesthetics of the Romance epics written during the centuries of the Crusades, this book offers a vital contribution to the growing interest in the way foreign women are presented in the texts of the Latin West and will be of consuming interest to students in women's studies, cultural studies, and medieval literature. The texts considered are written in the major European languages of the time and range from the Song of Songs through Geoffrey of Vinsauf's Poetria Nova to such epics and romances as Erec et Enide,Doon de Maience, Fierabras, La Prise d'Orange, Ars Versificatoria, The Sowdone of Babylone, and Parzifal.

Book Synopsis The Narreme in the Medieval Romance Epic by : Eugene Dorfman
Download or read book The Narreme in the Medieval Romance Epic written by Eugene Dorfman and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1969-12-15 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study Professor Dorfman applies the methods of modern linguistics to literary analysis. Literature may be described as the structured use of language: the modern linguistic analyzes language in a search for the minimal units of sound and form, phoneme and morpheme, and determines the combinations by which they can communicate meaning. The author here searches for a minimal structural unit in the literary narrative analogous to the phoneme and the morpheme in language structure. Based on a detailed analysis of the Roland and the Cid and twelve additional Romance narratives, Professor Dorfman's argument is that the structure of the medieval Romance epics may be analyzed into functional units which he calls "narremes." He divides a narrative into two types of structure: the superstructure and the substructure. A narrative, by definition, is a series of incidents. All the incidents in the narrative, taken as written, form the superstructure. Analysis, however, shows that many of the incidents may be abstracted from the narrative without deflecting the story-line. On the other hand, other incidents reveal themselves as organically linked with each other, so they cannot be omitted, without destroying the story-line. These selected incidents are the narremes, which make up the substructure of the narrative. This method of analysis produces so interesting and surprising results, results which make an important advance in research in linguistics and Romance literature. Eugene Dorfman, as an orthodox structuralist, has focused strictly on the formal descriptions of the narratives; but his analysis leads into the great traditional problems of literary history, and in particular poses anew the problem of the origins of the epic.
