Les placements privés, les capitaux à risque et les fonds d'investissement syndicaux étaient les sources principales de capital pour ces firmes. L'accès au capital était l'obstacle le plus sérieux auquel elles faisaient face en 1997. La commercialisation et la distribution étaient les raisons majeures pour lesquelles elles entretenaient des alliances stratégiques alors que les universités étaient leur partenaires de choix en R.-D.
