Book excerpt: In this book, Koshi-guruma, four of the world’s leading exponents of the technique give a remarkable insight into their unique variations. Two of Japan’s triple World Champions - Toshihiko Koga and Masashi Ebinuma – reveal one of the biggest throws in their Tachi-waza repertoire. Koga executed some of the most spectacular Koshi-gurumas ever seen in competition, with Ebinuma preferring to use it as a secret weapon in his bid for his third and final World title in Chelyabinsk, Russia, 2014. USA’s Kayla Harrison shows two different Koshi-gurumas. The emphasis for her standard variation revolves around the close control of her opponent’s sleeve, with an alternative variation launched as an off-the-grip attack. The book concludes with France’s Ugo Legrand, who opts for a very dangerous approach to Koshi-guruma, which thrives on his opponent’s deep and dominant grips. Throwing descriptions and tuition are accompanied by incredible photographic sequences, with the key technical moments highlighted. Many of the images are shown for the first time and come from Fighting Films’ vast photograph archive. Fighting Films has been closely working alongside the world’s greatest judoka for over 30 years. Throwing for Ippon is the first project where all of this international technical expertise is compiled in one place. Presented by Superstar Judo, Fighting Films’ online coaching subscription site, the techniques can also be viewed in video format by clicking on a QR code at either the start or end of each book. The author is Fighting Films partner Danny Hicks, who was IJF TV Director from 2009-2017. This guide is an essential for all judoka. Whether you just want to learn the basics of a throw or be inspired by numerous different variations from the world’s best, Throwing for Ippon reveals the techniques that are proven to work at the very highest level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview of karate connects the dots between its philosophical and spiritual foundations with its original purpose: to kill an attacker swiftly—and brutally. Prior to 1900, karate-dō was exclusively an art of unarmed self-defense. Its practice was designed for life-or-death situations—effectively, an art of killing. Here, authors Leonard Pellman and the late Masayuki Shimabukuro restore karate to its original intent. They move karate away from its popular modern-day sporting applications back to its deadly origins—and to the restraining philosophy of peace, self-sacrifice, compassion, and service to others that necessarily accompanied it. Readers will learn: • The purpose and meaning of karate-dō • The origins and major precepts of bushidō • Training methods, preparation, and etiquette • Fundamentals, spiritual power, training patterns, and analysis and application of kata • How to understand the body as a weapon With chapters on kokoro (heart, mind, and spirit), ki (spirit and energy), and the 7 major precepts of bushidō, The Art of Killing demonstrates how karate is more than a method of bringing an enemy down—it’s a philosophical and spiritual system grounded in essential lessons to guard against abuses of power. Together, the authors showcase how purity of intention matters, and how compassion and respect are the essence of karate training.

We examine these historic manuscripts to hear stories lost or untold. The 1934 edition of “Tō-te Dō Gaisetsu 唐手道概説” by Miyagi Chōjun 宮城長順 稿, known also as “Ryūkyū Kenpō Karatedō Enkaku Gaiyō 琉球拳法唐手道沿革概要” is rare considering the majority of the recipients lost their personal belongings during and after the 2nd World War. The document contains a valuable glimpse into the thoughts and writings of Miyagi Chōjun 宮城長順 prior to the battle for Okinawa. The variations from the 1934 edition to the 1936 edition are minor however readers should note that the style (Gōjū-Ryū Karate-dō 剛柔流空手道) was still in one of many well-planned stages of development and under closer examination such becomes clear with both the minor revision in history and the technical syllabus as indicated by Miyagi Chōjun 宮城長順. Due to the age and deterioration of the original artifact, we turned to the supplementary published modern print versions of his (Miyagi Chōjun 宮城長順) publication to verify the Kanji inscribed from the publications by: · 1976 - Nagamine Shoshin 長嶺将真, 史実と伝統を守る沖縄の空手道 (Okinawan Karate-Dō that Preserves Historical Facts and Traditions). (The life and drama of the man Meitoku). In addition, the term Tō-te 唐手 (Tō-de) has been modernized to “Karate” as agreed upon by members of the Dai Nippon Butokukai Okinawa Chapter 大日本武徳会 沖縄県支部審議員Okinawa division, then chaired by Miyagi Chōjun宮城長順. Readers should understand that the term “Tō-te 唐手 (Tō-de)” was merely a popular vernacular of the era and was not intended to sugguest that Okinawa martial arts had originated in China. This was also collaborated by Miyagi Chōjun 宮城長順 in the October 1936 “Karatedō Zaidan-kai 空手道座談会 (Karate symposium),” and further supported by Okinawa prefectural researchers. China based martial arts were however excellent resources for training and research due to the country’s vast population and border proximity which encompassed a multitude of various styles from which to draw inspiration. And finally, the text and context of this manuscript by Miyagi Chōjun 宮城長順 is dated. In other words, people (in Okinawa and Japan) simply do not speak in the manner as written in the essay any longer. In our modern times, much of the terminology then used is now depreciated or, the rhythm of speech is considered ancient. For this reason, we have included italicized text for the clarification of framework.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a harmonized approach to three major martial arts namely, karate, jiu-jitsu, and judo. The first part deals with the philosophical aspect of life and looks at how balance should be achieved between opposites such as soft and hard, hot and cold, violence and non-violence, masculine and feminine, etc. (yin-yang) which are found in nature, rather than adopting the modern tendency which is to try to favour only one side of the equation to the detriment of the other. It illustrates how martial arts can help us develop ""mastery"" of these so-called opposites so as to live in harmony with our spiritual being instead of ignoring it and favouring the development of the ego, source of all our misery. The second part of the book covers the basic technical aspect of gross and fine motor skills and is addressed to advanced practitioners. It stresses the need to keep an open mind with reference to cultures and provides an extensive glossary (Japanese, English, and French).
