Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of the 20th century saw literary scholars from Russia positing a new definition for the nature of literature. Within the framework of Russian Formalism, the term ‘literariness’ was coined. The driving force behind this theoretical inquiry was the desire to identify literature—and art in general—as a way of revitalizing human perception, which had been numbed by the automatization of everyday life. The transformative power of ‘literariness’ is made manifest in many media artworks by renowned artists such as Chantal Akerman, Mona Hatoum, Gary Hill, Jenny Holzer, William Kentridge, Nalini Malani, Bruce Nauman, Martha Rosler, and Lawrence Weiner. The authors use literariness as a tool to analyze the aesthetics of spoken or written language within experimental film, video performance, moving image installations, and other media-based art forms. This volume uses as its foundation the Russian Formalist school of literary theory, with the goal of extending these theories to include contemporary concepts in film and media studies, such as Neoformalism, intermediality, remediation, and postdrama.

How does contingent materiality guide the artist towards finding form and developing a statement? This volume is dedicated to the object as a process in order to offer new insights into the ways the object - broadly construed, comprising digital and other non-classical objects - becomes an active element in artistic practice.

Book excerpt: Globalization expands and contracts daily, as art and artists cross and recross borders. Motorcycles, fashion houses, and vacuum cleaners find themselves exhibited in art museums, complete with their corporate identities intact. Corporate collections grow in size and influence, while Saatchi & Saatchi and Altoids Curiously Strong Mints roll off gallery-goers' tongues. Art & Economy gathers together essays which take a variety of stands on these multiple interrelations, as well as on artists whose work deals directly with our economic reality, such as Acces Local, Liam Gillick, Eva Grubinger, and Peter Zimmerman. It goes without saying that this book is a good deal.

Book excerpt: German curator Peter Friese has been intrigued by his country's ability to atone for some of the crimes of the Nazi era while other atrocities remain buried in the national subconcious. To explore the idea of the transformability of memory, Friese selected 12 diverse contemporary artists from various countries-each of whom had at some time produced art reflecting on the Holocaust-to elaborate on the role of art in exploring such layered and complex issues. Included are noted artists Christian Boltanski, General Idea, Shimon Attie and Jochen Gerz, among others, and eight in-depth essays. A thought-provoking exhibition catalog.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1980s, critical geopolitics has gone from being a radical critical perspective on the disciplines of political geography and international relations theory to becoming a recognised area of research in its own right. Influenced by poststructuralist concerns with the politics of representation, critical geopolitics considers the ways in which the use of particular discourses shape political practices. Initially critical geopolitics analysed the practical geopolitical language of the elites and intellectuals of statecraft. Subsequent iterations have considered the role that popular representations of the international political world play. As critical geopolitics has become a more established part of political geography it has attracted ever more critique: from feminists for its apparent blindness to the embodied effects of geopolitical praxis and from those who have been uncomfortable about its textual focus, while others have challenged critical geopolitics to address alternative, resistant forms of geopolitical practice. Again, critical geopolitics has been reworked to incorporate these challenges and the latest iterations have encompassed normative agendas, non-representational theory, emotional geographies and affect. It is against the vibrant backdrop of this intellectual development of critical geopolitics as a subdiscipline that this Companion is set. Bringing together leading researchers associated with the different forms of critical geopolitics, this volume produces an overview of its achievements, limitations, and areas of new and potential future development. The Companion is designed to serve as a key resource for an interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners interested in the spatiality of politics.

An impressive selection of Canadian and international curators reflect on their practice, their training, their upbringing in art institutions and outside them. The curator surfaces from this book as a figure who dwells both in the institutions of the art world and its fissures, its edges and gaps - as contributor Matthew Higgs writes, "between the audience and the stage, between the spectacle and its reception."
