Zum pädagogischen Thema wurde die Interkulturalität zuerst aufgrund von schulischen Problemen der Migrationskinder. Allerdings hat sich das Feld interkultureller Pädagogik mittlerweile massiv ausgebreitet, da die wirtschaftlichen Internationalisierungs- und Globalisierungsprozesse durch den fortschreitenden technischen Wandel stetig zunehmen und interkulturelle Kontexte im alltäglichen und beruflichen Leben zunehmen. Somit wird das Thema „Interkulturalität“ auch für Pädagogen der Erwachsenenbildung bedeutsam.

Die kritische Diskussion dieser drei Konzepte mündet in den Entwurf einer "Pädagogik kollektiver Zugehörigkeiten". Dieses neue Konzept greift neben der ethnisch-kulturellen auch andere Unterscheidungsdimensionen in den vielfältigen Milieus der Gesellschaft auf und macht sie für interkulturelle Sozialisations-, Lern- und Bildungsprozesse nutzbar. Auch Fragen der Diskriminierung, der pädagogischen Organisationen und der Professionalisierung interkultureller Pädagogik werden behandelt.

These questions are addressed in this collection of nine papers from the Third Annual Conference of the Nordic Network for Intercultural Communications. Answers are drawn from general, theoretical, pedagogical and empirical points of view. They agree on one fundamental issue: the language-identity-cutlure complex, dynamic and overlapping rather than static and isomorphic. Rather than adhering rigidly to any single theoretical model, there is an attempt to set up a dialog between differing models in order to arrive at a multidimensional view of the phenomena investigated.
