Its diagnostic categories reflected the consensus of a multidisciplinary group of experts in early childhood development and mental health. Book excerpt: This book presents cutting-edge research on adult attachment together with a complete overview of the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP), the authors' validated developmental assessment. In addition to identifying attachment classification groups, the AAP yields important information about dimensions--including defensive processes--not evaluated by other available measures. Detailed case illustrations show what the AAP looks like "in action" and what it reveals about individuals' early experiences, sense of self, and capacity to engage in close, protective relationships. The AAP can be used in clinical or research settings; the concluding chapter discusses promising applications to studying the neurobiology of attachment.

Book excerpt: "Research at the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre has shown that the Watch, Wait, and Wonder (WWW) approach is very effective as a short-term intervention for attachment and behavioral problems in infants and young children. It is also useful as a longer-term intervention and can be used adjunct to other therapies. Most importantly, by involving the parent directly in the child's therapy it benefits the relationship between infant/child and parent. The Manual describes the rational and therapeutic goals of WWW, its history and development, and the developmental considerations in its application."--Child Development Media, Inc. website.

Book excerpt: The original edition of Klaus Grawe's book exploring the basis and need for a more generally valid concept of psychotherapy fueled a lively debate among psychotherapists and psychologists in German-speaking areas. Now available in English, this book will help spread the concepts and the debate among a wider audience. The book is written in dialog form. A practicing therapist, a research psychologist, and a therapy researcher take part in three dialogs, each of which builds on the results of the previous dialog. The first dialog explores how therapeutic change takes place, while the second looks at how the mechanisms of action of psychotherapy can be understood in terms of basic psychological concepts. Finally, in the third dialog, a psychological theory of psychotherapy is developed. The practical implications of this are clearly shown in the form of case examples, as well as guidance on indications and treatment planning. The dialog ends with suggestions as to how therapy training and provision of psychotherapy could be improved on the basis of the model of psychotherapy that has been developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attachment theory, the brainchild of child psychiatrist and psychoanalyst John Bowlby, has begun to have a worldwide impact among clinicians within the last ten years. This interest marks a departure from the early fate of attachment theory. At first shunned by the psychoanalytic community, Bowlby's brilliant and groundbreaking effort to recast basic psychoanalytic concepts within system theories and a new, ethologically based model of the importance of affectional ties across the life span was taken up by a group of gifted developmental researchers. Empirical research not only tested and confirmed many basic propositions of attachment theory, but also extended Attachment theory in unexpected and creative ways. Bowlby was surprised and gratified by this turn of events, but also disappointed that his intended clinical audience has not taken the theory and run with it. This edited book is in part a testament to the fact that clinicians are beginning to do just that; they are taking Attachment theory and research creatively to examine clinical issues. In doing so, new vistas and hypothesis are being put forward showing that Attachment theory is alive and well. In this volume the editors gathered a distinguished group of clinician-scholars from around the world (Argentina, Italy, Mexico, UK, USA and Spain) to examine and extend Bowlby's legacy. The book should be of interest to clinicians regardless of their orientation. Attachment theory cuts across boundaries of clinical modalities-individual, group or family therapy-and orientations-psychoanalytic, cognitive or behavioural. The book should also be of interest to researchers who may find the heuristic value of clinical insights a valuable addition to the legacy of Attachment theory.

Book excerpt: Why do people submit to authority and derive pleasure even others have over them? What is the appeal of domination and submission, and why are they so prevalent in erotic life? Why is it so difficult for men and women to meet as equals? Why, indeed, do hey continue to recapitulate the positions of master and slave? In The Bonds of Love, noted feminist theorist and psychoanalyst Jessica Benjamin explains why we accept and perpetuate relationships of domination and submission. She reveals that domination is a complex psychological process which ensnares both parties in bonds of complicity, and shows how it underlies our family life, our social institutions, and especially our sexual relations, in spite of our conscious commitment to equality and freedom.

Book excerpt: The papers featured in Attachment and Sexuality create a dense tapestry, each forming a separate narrative strand that elucidates different configurations of the relationship between attachment and sexuality. As a whole, the volume explores the areas of convergence and divergence, opposition, and integration between these two systems. It suggests that there is a bi-directional web of influences that weaves the attachment and sexual systems together in increasingly complex ways from infancy to adulthood. The volume’s unifying thread is the idea that the attachment system, and particularly the degree of felt security, or lack thereof in relation to early attachment figures, provides a paradigm of relatedness that forms a scaffold for the developmental unfolding of sexuality in all its manifestations. Such manifestations include infantile and adult, masturbatory and mutual, and normative and perverse. Also central to the papers is the idea that the development of secure attachment is predicated, in part, on the development of the capacity for mentalization, or the ability to envision and interpret the behavior of oneself and others in terms of intentional mental states, including desires, feelings, beliefs, and motivations. Topics discussed in the book will help to shape the direction and tenor of further dialogues in the arena of attachment and sexuality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attachment and Interaction traces the early roots of attachment theory and the work of its creator, John Bowlby, presenting recent theoretical developments and their clinical applications in an accessible style. Bringing new and original ideas to the main theoretical points, the author explores such questions as how attachment theory can guide a critical exploration of how therapists work with their patients, and what the practical implications are of using such an approach. The book is divided into four parts. In the first, Marrone relates basic concepts from John Bowlby's seminal work to recent developments in attachment theory and research. The second part is an exploration of the relationship between attachment theory and contemporary psychoanalytic ideas, and part three discusses the clinical application of attachment theory to individual and group analysis, including a critique of iatrogenic interventions. In the fourth part Nicola Diamond looks at the way John Bowlby's position conflicted with the psychoanalytic orthodoxy of his time. She further examines controversial issues raised by Bowlby's work, suggesting that in order to appreciate fully his contribution a rethinking of philosophical premises is required.'There is a beautiful mix in this book, which integrates John Bowlby the individual and the professional. A mix that at times makes Bowlby burst from the pages and almost touch the reader. There was a goodness, humility, drive and sadness about John Bowlby, qualities that Marrone has expertly enlivened in the text. The book's target audience is certainly geared towards psychotherapists yet it remains accessible for the lay person or student to read. It is an absolute must if one wishes to know anything about John Bowlby.'- Psych-Talk, Newsletter for the Student Members Group of the British Psychological Society'Here is the story of how Dr John Bowlby really thought and practised. Mairo Marrone's anecdotes of the warmth and kindness he encountered as Bowlby's supervisee show a more personal view than other accounts. The book is immediately accessible helped along by a structure reminiscent of good history-taking. The reader is guided through the developments of Attachment Theory against the theoretical and political background of the Psychoanalytical Society of his day: the warring factions and frictions, mirroring the 1939-45 hostilities ... Many examples and anecdotes supplement the biographical and theoretical detail. There are visits to the teaching of Kohut, Lacan, Ezriel, Stern and many others. Disagreements are documented and explained. Mario Marrone has helpfully summarized the research and development in the years since Bowlby, which support the original theoretical structure, and has shared generously from his own clinical findings.'- Group Analysis'Mario Marrone clearly achieves more than his aim of providing the reader with a coherent reference framework. He has written an interesting, comprehensive and easy-to-read book. Attachment and Interaction is relevant and valuable reading for not only individual and group psychotherapists but for those working in statuary child care, adult and child psychiatry, family therapy and any profession where an understanding of inter/intra-personal relationships is essential. Throughout the book both Marrone and Nicola Diamond bring a new and exciting socio-cultural and political perspective to attachment theory which highlights its relevance in modern day contemporary society.'- International Journal of Psychotherapy

Mario Marrone explores how attachment theory can inform the way in which therapists work with their patients, and what the practical implications are of using such an approach. By bringing together personal anecdotes from his own experiences as Bowlby's supervisee with clear explanations of Bowlby's ideas, Marrone creates a memorable and engaging account of attachment theory. This new, updated edition includes references to bereavement, sexuality and the application of attachment-based principles to individual, family and group psychotherapy. This clear exposition of attachment theory is relevant and valuable reading for trainees and practising individual and group psychotherapists, family therapists and mental health professionals – as well as anyone with an interest in John Bowlby and the evolution of psychotherapy.
