Vom sagenhaften Reichtum saudischer Scheichs und ihren Harems. In dieser Ausarbeitung möchte ich es mir zur Aufgabe machen, die anderen Seiten des arabischen Königsreiches aufzuzeigen. Ich werde versuchen den Ursprung all’ dieses Prunks kritisch zu betrachten und die besonders strenge Auslegung des Islam in Saudi-Arabien aufzuzeigen. Im ersten Teil soll erst einmal das Land Saudi-Arabien vorgestellt werden. Mit seinen ethnischen Gruppen, Religionen, der Geographie und der (hauptsächlich aktuellen) Politik der Monarchie, sowie den gesellschaftlichen Gegebenheiten. Die soziale Sicherung des Volkes und die Ölrente sollen mit ein Teil der Ausarbeitung werden. Der zweite Teil ist der Geschichte des Landes, und damit auch der des „sektenähnlichen“ Wahhabitentums, gewidmet. Der letzte Teil dieser Ausarbeitung wird sich dann explizit mit dem Wahhabismus beschäftigen. Von seiner Entstehung bis zu seinen Relikten im aktuellen Königreich Saudi- Arabien.

As a response to foreign architectural solutions and the increasing popularity of Western lifestyles, a distinct style of architecture and urban planning has emerged. Characterised by an emphasis on privacy, expressed through high enclosures, gates, blinds, and tinted windows, ‘New Islamic Urbanism’ constitutes for some an important element of piety. For others, it enables alternative ways of life, indulgence in banned social practices, and the formation of both publics and counterpublics. Tracing the emergence of ‘New Islamic Urbanism’, this book sheds light on the changing conceptions of public and private space, in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, in the Saudi city of Jeddah. It challenges the widespread assumption that the public sphere is exclusively male in Muslim contexts such as Saudi Arabia, where women’s public visibility is limited by the veil and strict rules of gender segregation. Showing that the rigid segregation regime for which the country is known serves to constrain the movements of men and women alike, Stefan Maneval provides a nuanced account of the negotiation of public and private spaces in Saudi Arabia.

Book excerpt: Saudi Arabia is generally and justifiably viewed as a country with the fewest democratic institutions and the weakest traditions of pluralism in the world. It is therefore surprising to learn that at least in one corner of the Saudi world, there is a plurality voices. Jörg Matthias Determann brings this element to light by analysing an important field of cultural activity in Saudi Arabia: historical writing. By exploring the emergence of a plurality of historical narratives in the absence of formal political pluralism, Determann seeks to paint a more nuanced picture of Saudi Arabia than has previously been drawn. Since the 1920s local, tribal, Shi'i and dynastic histories have contributed to a growing plurality of narratives, diverging from and contesting the histories which focus on the royal family. Instead, they have emphasized the communities' historical independence from the House of Saud or asserting the communities' importance in Saudi national history. In addition to this, during the 1970s, distinct social and economic histories began to be developed, new narratives which have described important historical events evolving from wider social and economic factors rather than resulting from the actions of individual rulers or communities. Paradoxically, this happened because of the expansion of the Saudi state, including state-provision of mass education. A variety of previously illiterate and relatively poor sections of Saudi society, including former Bedouin, were thus empowered to produce histories which, while conformist for the most part, also provided a vehicle for dissenting voices. Furthermore, Determann argues that this proliferation of alternative histories is also due to globalizing processes, such as the spread of the internet. It is through this phenomenon that narrative plurality has been facilitated, by putting Saudi historians in contact with different ideologies, methodologies and source material from abroad. In challenging the widely-held perception of Saudi Arabia as an irredeemably closed and monolithic society, Historiography in Saudi Arabia provides a deeper understanding of modern Arab historiography, the Saudi state, and education and scholarship in the Middle East.

Book excerpt: Major powers have long pursued their interests across the Arabian Gulf region, particularly since the discovery of oil. By virtue of their power and influence in world affairs and in international forums, the interests of Russia, France, Germany, the United States, and Britain are especially notable in the region. This publication seeks to consider the various interests of these states in terms of Arabian Gulf's security, energy, social development, commerce and trade, as well as the region's role in the war against international terrorism. Undoubtedly, the strategic importance of the region lies in its vast capacity to fulfill global energy requirements by supplying oil at lower prices than any other oil-producing region. This invokes the adage that when it comes to foreign policy, states have no true allies, only interests. The present day dynamics of the Gulf region clearly demonstrate this dictum. Moreover, international interest in the region has increased substantially in the wake of the cataclysmic events of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent terrorist attacks attributed to the al-Qaeda organization and its affiliates, which, in large degree, stem from the Middle East. This fact has brought an unwanted focus on the internal dynamics of several states throughout the region. Regional security for oil production and supply, on the one hand, and political transformation and human development, on the other, are the driving forces behind the involvement of influential international players in the region. The vehicle to achieve these goals has increasingly been seen by the five principle powers as the promotion of internal political reform in several of the region's oil-producing states. The future stability and development of the Gulf region is of the utmost concern to the United States, Britain, Russia, Germany, and France. As the contributing authors relate, the region is important for a variety of reasons, and not one of the five powers adopted a laissez-faire approach. For each, the need for energy security and the reduction of the threat of terrorism emanating from the region cannot be underscored, whether set in the context of direct national interests or in the context of international economic, political, and security relations.
