Book excerpt: Success Strategies and Knowledge Transfer in Cross-Border Consulting Operations analyzes the international operations of consulting firms. Apart from developing a theoretical framework which differs from traditional theories about international trade, the main issues analyzed in this book are: 1) Success determinants when tendering for international consulting contracts; 2) The choice between exports, acquisition of a local firm or establishing a greenfield office when entering foreign markets; 3) The extent and nature of knowledge transfer to emerging markets; 4) The role of development agencies in international consulting projects; 5) The trend towards, and consequences of, more management services included in international projects; 6) The effects on competition when state-owned consulting firms are allowed to operate in the international market. The empirical analysis of these issues is based on a unique database of individual tender documents which Swedish consulting firms have submitted abroad.

The microeconomic analysis of spillovers leads to the insight that the spillover and flow of knowledge is not at all automatic. Instead, this volume suggests that a filter exists between knowledge and its economic application. The focus of this volume is on several key mechanisms that serve to reduce this filter and facilitate the flow of knowledge. In particular, the volume draws on an emerging literature identifying the role of knowledge spillovers to investigate significance of labor mobility and informal networks as mechanisms facilitating the flow of knowledge. No field in economics has dealt extensively with the microeconomics of knowledge spillovers. This volume brings together scholars from a broad spectrum of fields including labor economics, regional economics, the economics of innovation and technological change, and sociology to introduce new insights yielded from the microfoundations of knowledge spillovers.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the history of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), from its origins in the mid-19th century to nowadays. ITU was the first international organization ever and still plays a crucial role in managing global telecommunications today. Putting together some of the most relevant scholars in the field of transnational communications, the book covers the history of ITU from 1865 to digital times in a truly global perspective, taking into account several technologies like the telegraph, the telephone, cables, wireless, radio, television, satellites, mobile phone, the internet and others. The main goal is to identify the long-term strategies of regulation and the techno-diplomatic manoeuvres taken inside ITU, from convincing the majority of the nations to establish the official seat of the Telegraph Union bureau in Switzerland in the 1860s, to contrasting the multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance (supported by US and ICANN). History of the International Telecommunication Union is a trans-disciplinary text and can be interesting for scholars and students in the fields of telecommunications, media, international organizations, transnational communication, diplomacy, political economy of communication, STS, and others. It has the ambition to become a reference point in the history of ITU and, at the same time, just the fi rst comprehensive step towards a longer, inter-technological, political and cultural history of transnational communications to be written in the future.

With contributions from an international team of leading scholars, this cutting-edge reference work introduces readers to current debates about the role of science and technology in global society and the policy responses that shape its development. Comprising 28 specially commissioned chapters, the Handbook addresses major trends in global policy, including a significant shift toward private scientific research, the change in the distribution of science and technical knowledge, and a heightened awareness among policymakers of the economic and technological impact of scientific activity. Book excerpt: Project management is a growing field, and is expanding to more industries; however, it still faces the same challenges it did decades ago. There is a lack of understanding and recognition of how knowledge is shared and how knowledge sharing can help project teams accomplish successful outcomes. Without knowledge transfer and sharing, organizations fail to continue practices that worked well and fail to discontinue those that resulted in errors or rework. The research presented in this book builds on the theories of organizational learning, knowledge management, and dynamic capabilities. Data was obtained through a quantitative survey from project professionals working on information technology (IT) projects in the United States. The goal of this study was to gain an understanding of the influence of knowledge transfer in IT projects that contributes to project success. Results and conclusions should be of benefit to project managers in all industries.

Book excerpt: This volume represents the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Innovation through Knowledge Transfer, InnovationKT’2010, organised jointly by KES International and the Institute of Knowledge Transfer, and taking place in Coventry, UK on 7&8 December 2010. Featuring world-class invited speakers and contributions from a range of backgrounds and countries, the conference provided an excellent opportunity to disseminate, share and discuss the impact of university-business interaction through knowledge transfer in all its forms. There were two main motivations in initiating the Innovation through Knowledge Transfer series. The first aim was to provide the chance for publication on a subject where few opportunities exist already. The second motivation was to foster the development of a community from the diverse range of individuals practicing knowledge transfer. It is becoming clear that the delegates of the conference are drawn from a diverse community of practice. InnovationKT’2010 has succeeded in bringing together contributions from both the academic and practitioner sections of the knowledge transfer community. The programme contained seven invited keynote talks, 40 oral presentations grouped into eight sessions, and one interactive workshop. The proceedings contain 29 chapters drawn from this material. There were 91 registered delegates drawn from 10 countries of the world. The field of knowledge transfer is still immature, but these proceedings demonstrate that InnovationKT conference is making a significant contribution to its academic development.
