Download or read book Hunts in Dreams written by Tom Drury and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2013-05-14 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The award-winning author of The End of Vandalism pens “a gorgeous, inexplicably sad and funny novel about screwups trying to do better” (Salon). In this mesmerizing novel, Tom Drury once again journeys to the quiet Midwest to spend an action-packed October weekend in the lives of a precarious family whose members all want something without knowing how to get it: for Charles, an heirloom shotgun; for his wife, Joan, the imaginative life she once knew; for their young son, Micah, a knowledge of the scope and reliability of his world, aided by prowling the empty town at night; and for Joan’s daughter, Lyris, a stable foot from which to begin to grow up. Sometimes together, sometimes crucially apart, father, mother, son, and daughter move through a series of vivid encounters that demonstrate how even the most provisional family can endure in its own particular way. “A beguiling novel . . . perceptive and captivating.” —The New York Times “Entrancing.” —The Guardian “Startling and utterly original.” —Newsday “Drury is an absolutely delightful writer who has carved out a world of his own in American fiction, one that is odd, revealing, and yet filled with love.” —Library Journal “The trick and true pleasure here are in the utterly ordinary context these extraordinary events occur in. Drury never misses a beat—the quiet moments dazzle as much the louder ones.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book Synopsis Jubilee Hitchhiker by : William Hjortsberg
Download or read book Jubilee Hitchhiker written by William Hjortsberg and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 1454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confident and robust, Jubilee Hitchhiker is an comprehensive biography of late novelist and poet Richard Brautigan, author of Troutfishing in America and A Confederate General from Big Sur, among many others. When Brautigan took his own life in September of 1984 his close friends and network of artists and writers were devastated though not entirely surprised. To many, Brautigan was shrouded in enigma, erratic and unpredictable in his habits and presentation. But his career was formidable, an inspiration to young writers like Hjortsberg trying to get their start. Brautigan's career wove its way through both the Beat–influenced San Francisco Renaissance in the 1950s and the "Flower Power" hippie movement of the 1960s; while he never claimed direct artistic involvement with either period, Jubilee Hitchhiker also delves deeply into the spirited times in which he lived. As Hjortsberg guides us through his search to uncover Brautigan as a man the reader is pulled deeply into the writer's world. Ultimately this is a work that seeks to connect the Brautigan known to his fans with the man who ended his life so abruptly in 1984 while revealing the close ties between his writing and the actual events of his life. Part history, part biography, and part memoir this etches the portrait of a man destroyed by his genius.
Book Synopsis The Robust Urban Transportation Network Design Problem by : Alireza Naimi

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Computer Science - IT-Security, grade: 4, The University of Memphis, language: English, abstract: This dissertation proposes two models for designing robust networks against intelligent attackers. In both models, three stakeholders are considered: the network manager/designer, the adversary (intelligent attacker), and the network users. The frameworks of both models and some other possible models are presented in this dissertation. The first framework is a bi-objective designer model. The designer in this model has two objectives at the top level: to reduce the total system cost and to reduce the vulnerability of the network. The Sioux Falls network consists of 24 nodes and 76 links was chosen for to evaluate this framework. The decision of the designer and attacker was improving or destroying the links. Metaheuristic algorithm was used to solve the designer and attacker problems. For the user equilibrium problem, the Frank-Wolfe algorithm was implemented. The objective of the designer of the network in the first model, consist of two goals. The two goals may conflict on the amount of amount of limited available budget to be invested on the desired project/links. Therefore, a trade off solutions between these two objectives may forms. The results proved that the proposed multi-level model is able to find the Pareto front solutions for the two objectives of the designer. The second framework is a three-level zero-sum game model. In this framework, the payoffs from the designer are assumed to have the same value to the adversary entity. Therefore, the goal of this framework is to minimize the maximum gain that the adversary can achieve. An example network with 6 nodes and 16 links was used to examine this framework. The results showed that the model could be a valuable tool to reduce the potential vulnerability of networks. Other indicators of system performance can be implemented in the upper-level of
Download or read book The Primal Bias written by Wil Jasson and published by . This book was released on 2003-01-16 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *** NOMINATED FOR THE PULITZER PRIZE! *** ARE CIVILIZATIONS ON DISTANT PLANETS MERE FANTASY? ARE ALL SIGNS OF EXTRATERRESTRIAL VISITORS FALSE? Thanks to advances in technology, we have already found a planet orbiting a star at about the same distance that Earth orbits its own star, the sun. Such a discovery suggests that intelligent life exists out there, perhaps on many worlds. But what sort of arrangement could repeatedly lead to such an awesome outcome? Nature has an orientation toward life, a built-in Primal Bias that acts in a manner both subtle and mighty (somewhat like gravitation, for instance). The effects of this Primal Bias, besides being profound, are highly diverse. Still those effects tend to favor the living state, in one way or another, so that they produce a consistent partiality toward life. As a result, organisms emerge and evolve not just through chance occurrences but with the strong support of a special Bias. As a predisposition, the Primal Bias functions largely through a "Master System," a seeming hodgepodge of powerful expedients and constraints that tend (each in its own mode) to promote whatever may help life. These expedients and constraints act as a system only in the very long term and only because all are consistent with the Primal Bias. They are generally associated with codes, including codes as rudimentary as valence or as advanced as the genetic code. The Primal Bias has a critical impact on both essence and evolution, from the earliest forms of existence to the most advanced forms of life. And that impact is cumulative. Conceivably, the Primal Bias is the key to a grand scheme underlying the constitution of the universe. This is science of the new millennium, a way to figure out some of the mysteries of the cosmos, yet the presentation is informal, non-mathematical and strikingly illustrated. Anyone interested in science or nature, or in life on other worlds, can get carried away. To order The Primal Bias, click on the table above or visit a bookstore or Amazon.com, etc. Or telephone 1-888-280-7715 (during business hours) toll-free.
