Book excerpt: Do you feel like you've been missing out on the abundant life? Most people do. If you take a look at the life of Jesus, you see that he called his disciples to follow him - on a physical journey, not just a spiritual one. Hundreds of books talk about our faith walk as a journey. But few delve into the subject of how a physical journey can reinvent and revitalize our spiritual journey with God. Kingdom Journeys is about the journeys we all take, presented in a series of "initiation steps" by disciples who are taking serious the call to leave everything and simply "go." This book is an exploration of an ancient spiritual discipline we must recover - if we're going to truly follow Jesus.

Book excerpt: Blending history and fantasy, science and art, the story of how dinosaurs were discovered and reimagined comes to life through splendid illustrations in this handsome slipcased volume. Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Brontosaurus, Tyrannosaurus…these exotic prehistoric creatures continue to fascinate more than 200 million years after they last roamed the earth. Dinosaur skeletons have been reconstituted, reconstructed, and interpreted by scientists and artists since the first fossils were uncovered near Cañon City, Colorado, in 1877, sparking the Bone Wars. In 1907, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History mounted “Dippy” the Diplodocus, which sparked dinomania, igniting the imagination of popular culture and Hollywood. From the Morrison Formation to Montana’s Hell Creek, and from Mongolia’s Gobi Desert to Argentina’s Patagonia, new discoveries and excavations have uncovered a lost kingdom that has inspired myriad homages. This volume enriches our understanding of dinosaurs through rich visual iconography—from paintings, drawings, and sketches to new photography, film stills, reconstructed skeletons, and archival documents—along with detailed descriptions and anecdotes from great nineteenth-century explorers, artists, and writers such as Benjamin W. Hawkins, Charles R. Knight, Zdenĕk Burian, and Jules Verne, and from filmmakers including Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg. This book is published in partnership with the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris to coincide with a traveling exhibition of the exceptional Trix T. Rex and the international release of Jurassic World.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: News flash: "The Bible doesn't teach that people go to heaven or hell when they die." Rather, it teaches that God's kingdom will come to this earth in judgment and restoration, making everything wrong with the world right. The doorway into the age to come is not death but the return of Christ when his followers experience resurrection rather than disembodiment. This simple idea is not only the key to understanding the biblical vision of the future, but it also formed the core of Jesus's gospel message, and it provides the motivation to live out your faith today. The goal of this book is nothing short of igniting a revolution in the church's understanding of the kingdom of God. Kingdom Journey marries a biblical exploration to a historical investigation to explain not only what the kingdom of God is, but also how Christianity lost this precious pearl of great price. Thankfully, several movements over the past five centuries have initiated recoveries of the kingdom idea, but many Christians remain in the dark, beset with medieval folk theology. This book will open your eyes to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness with clarity and vigor.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A searing, deeply moving memoir of illness and recovery that traces one young woman’s journey from diagnosis to remission to re-entry into “normal” life—from the author of the Life, Interrupted column in The New York Times ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, The Rumpus, She Reads, Library Journal, Booklist • “I was immersed for the whole ride and would follow Jaouad anywhere. . . . Her writing restores the moon, lights the way as we learn to endure the unknown.”—Chanel Miller, The New York Times Book Review “Beautifully crafted . . . affecting . . . a transformative read . . . Jaouad’s insights about the self, connectedness, uncertainty and time speak to all of us.”—The Washington Post In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world.” She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch—first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Next came the exhaustion, and the six-hour naps that only deepened her fatigue. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her twenty-third birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival. Just like that, the life she had imagined for herself had gone up in flames. By the time Jaouad flew home to New York, she had lost her job, her apartment, and her independence. She would spend much of the next four years in a hospital bed, fighting for her life and chronicling the saga in a column for The New York Times. When Jaouad finally walked out of the cancer ward—after countless rounds of chemo, a clinical trial, and a bone marrow transplant—she was, according to the doctors, cured. But as she would soon learn, a cure is not where the work of healing ends; it’s where it begins. She had spent the past 1,500 days in desperate pursuit of one goal—to survive. And now that she’d done so, she realized that she had no idea how to live. How would she reenter the world and live again? How could she reclaim what had been lost? Jaouad embarked—with her new best friend, Oscar, a scruffy terrier mutt—on a 100-day, 15,000-mile road trip across the country. She set out to meet some of the strangers who had written to her during her years in the hospital: a teenage girl in Florida also recovering from cancer; a teacher in California grieving the death of her son; a death-row inmate in Texas who’d spent his own years confined to a room. What she learned on this trip is that the divide between sick and well is porous, that the vast majority of us will travel back and forth between these realms throughout our lives. Between Two Kingdoms is a profound chronicle of survivorship and a fierce, tender, and inspiring exploration of what it means to begin again.

Book excerpt: A warm and unforgettable portrait of a family letting go of the known world to encounter an unfamiliar one filled with rich possibilities and new understandings. Bruce Kirkby had fallen into a pattern of looking mindlessly at his phone for hours, flipping between emails and social media, ignoring his children and wife and everything alive in his world, when a thought struck him. This wasn't living; this wasn't him. This moment of clarity started a chain reaction which ended with a grand plan: he was going to take his wife and two young sons, jump on a freighter and head for the Himalaya. In Blue Sky Kingdom, we follow Bruce and his family's remarkable three months journey, where they would end up living amongst the Lamas of Zanskar Valley, a forgotten appendage of the ancient Tibetan empire, and one of the last places on earth where Himalayan Buddhism is still practiced freely in its original setting. Richly evocative, Blue Sky Kingdom explores the themes of modern distraction and the loss of ancient wisdom coupled with Bruce coming to terms with his elder son's diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum. Despite the natural wonders all around them at times, Bruce's experience will strike a chord with any parent—from rushing to catch a train with the whole family to the wonderment and beauty that comes with experience the world anew with your children.

Book excerpt: The pursuit of our God-given destiny is often a struggle of yearning-a yearning to walk in our God-given destiny that is fueled by a burning desire to walk in the fullness of all that God has spoken to us about us. Yet with every step that we attempt, we appear to be more clueless as to where our journey leads, where we thought this yearning was leading us and what we thought we knew is often shrouded in a cloud of uncertainty. Did we really hear God? Did He really assign this Kingdom Destiny to me, and is it too big for me? It is this yearning and grasping for certainty and understanding amid this burning desire to walk in our God-given destiny that just will not allow us to quit even when uncertainty continually beckons us to throw in the towel. I have been right there just like many of you. I have and continue to walk along this journey, yearning and grasping to fully understand the vast complexity of God's plan for my life, driven through the vehicle of FAITH undergirded in the power of PRAYER. Therefore, I encourage us all to pray continually for understanding and guidance, as we press ever forward to the fulfillment of all that God has said to us about us, that is yet to be seen ALL BY FAITH! A Journey to Kingdom Destiny is a collection of my prayers and inspirational thoughts in pursuit of my God-given destiny that has encouraged me to keep pressing forward even after I have thrown in the towel and God has given it back to me. It is a collection of prayers and inspirational thoughts shared with others who likewise believe in the power of prayer. These shared prayers and inspirational thoughts have empowered this Abiding Faith Ministries collective prayer fellowship, and likewise, I bet you too will be encouraged to be steadfast through every challenge, issue, and struggle as your vision of destiny continues to burst forth on the horizon of your life, believing that no matter what it may look like or feel like right now, one prayer can change everything ALL BY FAITH!

Book excerpt: We are told, “Look out for yourself first” and “Nice guys finish last.” But following that path leaves us feeling isolated and anxious, and can even take us to a place of ruin. This is not a magnificent journey. There is a road to life in the unshakeable kingdom of God, but it's not an easy journey. "We cannot enter into the kingdom unless we take our cross and die to ourselves," writes author James Bryan Smith. "We often assume that this will be painful. And of course it is. But what is the alternative? I can, for example, choose to navigate my life, choose to live as I want, and aim at fulfilling all of my desires. This will result in that despair Kierkegaard wrote of, the sickness unto death. . . . The wisest choice, then, is to surrender." In The Magnificent Journey, the author shows us the better road, the road less travelled, but the road full of riches. Along the way he introduces us to new spiritual practices that will provide the sustenance we need for the deepest, most joy-filled journey of our lives—the journey into the heart of God.

Book excerpt: Pacific Island countries suffer from alarming rates of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and are consistently ranked as the most obese and diabetic in the world. At the centre of this NCD crisis is the underlying problem of consumption of processed imported foods; high in fat, salt and sugar, displacing nutritious local produce; crops and fish from the daily meals of Pacific people. In order to help address this problem, the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation ACP-EU (CTA), in collaboration with MORDI Tonga Trust, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Pacific Islands Private Sector Organisation (PIPSO), organised three activities in the Kingdom of Tonga from 3 - 6 December 2018. The integrated four-day event was held under the theme Transforming Nutrition-Sensitive Value Chain Development in the Pacific Islands within the framework of the CTA/IFAD/PIPSO Innov4AgPacific project. The overall objective of which is to “Strengthen the capacity of Pacific Island countries to develop strategies and programmes that would increase accessibility of poor rural peoples to nutritious and healthy foods”.
