Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's History of King Henry the Fifth The notes on textual variations have been either omitted or abridged, as the text of the play is now virtually settled. For most of the Critical Comments in the former edition I have substituted matter of my own, much of which is drawn from familiar lectures prepared for audiences of teachers and students. Minor Changes have been made throughout the Notes, and many new ones have been added, includ ing a considerable number in place of those referring to my former editions of other plays. The book is now absolutely complete in itself. I believe that teachers will prefer the new edition to the old one; but both can be used, without serious inconvenience, in the same Class or club. The Folio in the reprint by the Shakespeare Society of New York runs to lines, the Quarto only to 1721. And even this number is less than it appears. The Quarto has a trick of splitting up its prose into very short lines in order to give it the appearance of poetry. This, of course, increases the number of lines. Estimated purely by the number of words, the advantage of the Folio would be much greater. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The authoritative edition of William Shakespeare’s historic play Henry V from the Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for both students and general readers. Henry V is Shakespeare’s most famous “war play”; it includes the storied English victory over the French at Agincourt. Some of it glorifies war, especially the choruses and Henry’s speeches urging his troops into battle. But we also hear bishops conniving for war to postpone a bill that would tax the church, and soldiers expecting to reap profits from the conflict. Even in the speeches of Henry and his nobles, there are many chilling references to the human cost of war. The authoritative edition of Henry V from the Folger Shakespeare Library includes: –Freshly edited text based on the best early printed version of the play –Newly revised explanatory notes conveniently placed on pages facing the text of the play –Scene-by-scene plot summaries –A key to the play’s famous lines and phrases –An introduction to reading Shakespeare’s language –An essay by a leading Shakespeare scholar providing a modern perspective on the play –Fresh images from the Folger Shakespeare Library’s vast holdings of rare books –An up-to-date annotated guide to further reading –An essay by Catherine Belsey The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, is home to the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare’s printed works, and a magnet for Shakespeare scholars from around the globe. In addition to exhibitions open to the public throughout the year, the folder offers a full calendar of performances and programs. For more information, visit Folger.edu.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Third Part of King Henry the Sixth I shall now leave the opinions of others and summarise my examination of the text, or texts, before us; and proceed at once to look for evidence of those other coadjutors, Peele, Marlowe and Greene, merely premising that there is much less of any writer (other than Shakespeare) in Part III., as well as in its foundation play, than was the case in Part II. And its early form. In T he True Tragedy I see a little of Marlowe, less of Greene, more of Peele and much more of Shakespeare. And in the final play there is yet more of Shakespeare and yet less of the others. Whatever may have been the original plan, the committee seems to have dissolved and left him in possession, with Peele to advise. Book excerpt: From a master historian comes an astonishing chronicle of life in medieval Europe and the battle that altered the course of an empire. Although almost six centuries old, the Battle of Agincourt still captivates the imaginations of men and women on both sides of the Atlantic. It has been immortalized in high culture (Shakespeare's Henry V) and low (the New York Post prints Henry's battle cry on its editorial page each Memorial Day). It is the classic underdog story in the history of warfare, and generations have wondered how the English -- outnumbered by the French six to one -- could have succeeded so bravely and brilliantly. Drawing upon a wide range of sources, eminent scholar Juliet Barker casts aside the legend and shows us that the truth behind Agincourt is just as exciting, just as fascinating, and far more significant. She paints a gripping narrative of the October 1415 clash between outnumbered English archers and heavily armored French knights. But she also takes us beyond the battlefield into palaces and common cottages to bring into vivid focus an entire medieval world in flux. Populated with chivalrous heroes, dastardly spies, and a ferocious and bold king, Agincourt is as earthshaking as its subject -- and confirms Juliet Barker's status as both a historian and a storyteller of the first rank.

Two plays appeared in one of them the story was continued, and fair Katharine was there to make them merry; Sir John, however, was seen no more: in the other the story was not continued, but there was Sir John in his full proportions, - at least so said the bills; the more critical spectators probably came away with a shrewd suspicion that they had been imposed upon. Which of these two plays - Hear? V. And Tile Merry Wives of Windsor - preceded the other is a question upon which the critics are still divided; we shall return to it directly. We must first Sketch the history of the pro duction of Harry V., as far as it can be collected from the evidence available. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry V: The Typical Mediaeval Hero This volume had its original in an article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography, but is founded on a fresh study of the chief authorities. If I cannot claim to have exhausted all sources of information, I have nevertheless sought throughout to base my narrative on chronicles and documents of contemporary, or nearly contemporary date. For few periods of our mediaeval history is there more abundant material. At least three lives of Henry V. were written within twenty years of his death. Of these the most valuable, so far as it extends, is the Gesta Regis Henrici Quinti, which was the work of a chaplain in the royal service. Mr. Williams, in his edition of the Gesta, suggested that the author was one Jean Bordin, a native of Aquitaine, who is known to have been present as one of Henry's chaplains in the campaign of Agincourt. This ascription is, however, purely conjectural, and Dr. Lenz has argued that in the Gesta we possess the genuine prose Life of Henry V. composed by Thomas Elmham, prior of Lenton. But we have no evidence that Elmham was ever in Henry's own service. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
