The Folio in the reprint by the Shakespeare Society of New York runs to lines, the Quarto only to 1721. And even this number is less than it appears. The Quarto has a trick of splitting up its prose into very short lines in order to give it the appearance of poetry. This, of course, increases the number of lines. Estimated purely by the number of words, the advantage of the Folio would be much greater. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Third Part of King Henry the Sixth I shall now leave the opinions of others and summarise my examination of the text, or texts, before us; and proceed at once to look for evidence of those other coadjutors, Peele, Marlowe and Greene, merely premising that there is much less of any writer (other than Shakespeare) in Part III., as well as in its foundation play, than was the case in Part II. And its early form. In T he True Tragedy I see a little of Marlowe, less of Greene, more of Peele and much more of Shakespeare. And in the final play there is yet more of Shakespeare and yet less of the others. Whatever may have been the original plan, the committee seems to have dissolved and left him in possession, with Peele to advise. Two plays appeared in one of them the story was continued, and fair Katharine was there to make them merry; Sir John, however, was seen no more: in the other the story was not continued, but there was Sir John in his full proportions, - at least so said the bills; the more critical spectators probably came away with a shrewd suspicion that they had been imposed upon. Which of these two plays - Hear? V. And Tile Merry Wives of Windsor - preceded the other is a question upon which the critics are still divided; we shall return to it directly. We must first Sketch the history of the pro duction of Harry V., as far as it can be collected from the evidence available. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Third Part of Henry the Sixt: The Players' d104 of "the True Tragedie," Etc; Of 1595; With the First Folio d104 of 1623 AT Folio line 232 of the Third Part of the Henry Sz'xt/z, now before us in this volume, is the stage direction Here taey come down. If Shakespeare wrote that, he wrote it almost exactly three hun dred years ago as this volume goes to press - in precisely the words which a stagewright to-day would use, to indicate that, at this point, the actors upon the stage were to pass to the front of it. At line F. 1848 of the Second Part of this play there occurs the stage direction, Bea' put fartil, which ex presses the actual poverty and meanness of the stage for which Shakespeare wrote. At that point the spectators have been asked to imagine a stately audience room in King Henry's palace. The dead body of Duke Humphrey is to be visited Warwick says to the assembled court, Enter his chamber, View his lifeless corpse; a bed is brought in, and the dialogue passes to that famous discussion of the signs of violent death as Opposed to the mortal linea ments of the timely and peace parted. It seems to me that these two stage directions together present us at once with the exact histrionic situation of the date: namely, a stage that was comic in its practical disabilities, and a Shakespeare, fully conscious of its disabilities, writing the stately drama that was to tax the opulence of the stage that was to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's History of King Henry the Fifth My former edition of King Henry V, first published in 1877, is now substantially remade on the same general plan as the revised Merchant of Venice and other plays that have preceded it. The notes on textual variations have been either omitted or abridged, as the text of the play is now virtually settled. For most of the "Critical Comments" in the former edition I have substituted matter of my own, much of which is drawn from familiar lectures prepared for audiences of teachers and students. Minor changes have been made throughout the Notes, and many new ones have been added, including a considerable number in place of those referring to my former editions of other plays. The book is now absolutely complete in itself. I believe that teachers will prefer the new edition to the old one; but both can be used, without serious inconvenience, in the same class or club. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described by the TLS as 'a formidable bibliographical achievement ... destined to become a key reference work for Shakespeareans', Shakespeare in Print is now issued in a revised and expanded edition offering a wealth of new material, including a chapter which maps the history of digital editions from the earliest computer-generated texts to the very latest digital resources. Murphy's narrative offers a masterful overview of the history of Shakespeare publishing and editing, teasing out the greater cultural significance of the ways in which the plays and poems have been disseminated and received over the centuries from Shakespeare's time to our own. The opening chapters have been completely rewritten to offer close engagement with the careers of the network of publishers and printers who first brought Shakespeare to print, additional material has been added to all chapters, and the chronological appendix has been updated and expanded.
