In unserer heutigen globalisierten Gesellschaft gilt dieser Satz mehr denn je. Grenzüberschreitende Lebens- und Arbeitsverhältnisse verlangen ein hohes Maß an fremdsprachlicher Kompetenz. Angesichts dieser sich verändernden Welt, steht auch das Schulwesen vor immer neuen Herausforderungen. Immer früher sollen Kinder fremde Sprachen erlernen. Dabei wird das Hauptaugenmerk auf die bessere Lernfähigkeit der Schüler im Grundschulalter gelegt. Die Tatsache, dass im Jahre 2004/2005 der flächendeckende Englischunterricht auf der Primarstufe eingeführt wurde, trägt dieser Entwicklung Rechnung. Inwiefern der frühe Fremdsprachenunterricht der Grundschulen als Perspektive für die Zukunft gesehen werden kann, ist allerdings umstritten. Die für die Bearbeitung des Themas zentrale Frage lautet daher, ob der Erwerb einer zweiten Sprache eine Chance bietet oder ob die Bilingualität eine Gefahr für die kindliche (Sprach-)Entwicklung darstellt. Eine wesentliche Rolle innerhalb der Forschungsdiskussion spielt dabei die Debatte über das optimale Alter für den Erwerb einer Fremdsprache. Dabei wird insbesondere in der Gesellschaft die Meinung vertreten, dass der frühere Erwerb zu besseren Ergebnissen führe. Gegensätzliche Stimmen sehen darin jedoch die Gefahr einer Überforderung des Kindes und vertreten die Ansicht, dass es notwendig sei erst eine Sprache - die eigene Muttersprache - vollständig zu erwerben. Das gleichzeitige Erlernen beider Sprachen würde Sprachmischungen hervorrufen, die oftmals als Indiz für unzureichende Kompetenzen angeführt werden. Um beiden Seiten gerecht zu werden, müssen deshalb die Anforderungen an den Fremdsprachenunterricht an der Zielgruppe - der Grundschüler - ausgerichtet werden.
