This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Owen Wright analyses a single recording of classical Persian music made by Touraj Kiaras, a distinguished singer, accompanied by four noted instrumentalists. The format of the recording is typical of a public concert performance, and thus includes instrumental compositions as well as a central exploration of vocal repertoire and technique. The analysis identifies salient structural features, whether of the individual components or of the whole, in a way accessible to the western reader, but it also takes account of the analytical metalanguage used in Persian scholarship, and includes consideration of the relationship between music and poetry. It is important to note that it is also guided by the perceptions of the performer, whose input and responses to questions have significantly influenced the enterprise. To avoid the dryly impersonal, the analysis is also framed by an introduction which combines a biographical sketch of Touraj Kiaras with a survey of the twentieth-century evolution of Persian classical music and of the position of the vocal repertoire within it, and by an epilogue which examines further the ideological basis of prevalent attitudes to music, and seeks to explore the validity of the analytical enterprise within this context.

Book excerpt: Overwhelmingly, Black teenage girls are negatively represented in national and global popular discourses, either as being “at risk” for teenage pregnancy, obesity, or sexually transmitted diseases, or as helpless victims of inner city poverty and violence. Such popular representations are pervasive and often portray Black adolescents’ consumer and leisure culture as corruptive, uncivilized, and pathological. In She’s Mad Real, Oneka LaBennett draws on over a decade of researching teenage West Indian girls in the Flatbush and Crown Heights sections of Brooklyn to argue that Black youth are in fact strategic consumers of popular culture and through this consumption they assert far more agency in defining race, ethnicity, and gender than academic and popular discourses tend to acknowledge. Importantly, LaBennett also studies West Indian girls’ consumer and leisure culture within public spaces in order to analyze how teens like China are marginalized and policed as they attempt to carve out places for themselves within New York’s contested terrains.

Book excerpt: This book covers original research on the implementation of open educational practices through the use of open educational resources at the university level. The emphasis on open education in this book is on contextualising resources, supporting student agency and fostering self-directed learning specifically within a South African milieu. The envisaged chapters cover conceptual and review research and empirical work focussing on open educational practices and the use of renewable assessments. The work starts off with an overview of an institutional-wide open education project that prompted the research followed by research on open education in terms of various modules in the health science, music education, law, philosophy, dietetics, anthropology, French language learning, journalism and political science. There is a clear gap in the literature on open education in terms of open educational practices, specifically in terms of contextualising resources, supporting student agency and fostering self-directed learning in a South African context. Despite the existence of some general works on open education in terms of policy, social justice and open textbooks, this book will be unique in exploring the intersections of openness, specifically with contextualisation, student agency and self-directedness.

In fifth grade, she lost her virginity to her first love. At thirteen, she got pregnant with the same guy, which caused their relationship to fall short. She was later labeled as the black sheep and had her self-esteem slowly broken into pieces. But all these deplorable experiences she went through while growing up only served as the foretelling of the even bigger challenges that awaited her in the future. Yet amid her journey through a seemingly dark alley, God gave her an awesome gift and she found a way to muster her courage and live life in search for the love that she truly deserved. Written in a lighthearted tone and in a witty and humorous manner, I’m a Good Girl, Why Me? chronicles Keys’ story of survival. It inspires readers with its testimony of hope, resilience, courage, and victory. It unfolds how one woman trekked through an incredible journey of pain and how she eventually found her happy ending with the promise of a new love.

She became a brilliant neurosurgeon while he became Father Eldar, a Catholic priest. He witnessed Kiara lose a critical patient—the wife of Declan Remington, a hand surgeon—which caused her endless pain, guilt, and isolation. Eldar comforted her through her grief until the death of an abused child paved the way for her to reconcile with Remington, and a simple admission brought forgiveness and an enchanting romance. The abused child tragedy brought Adrian Savage, a handsome detective, into Kiara’s life. A new friendship developed, but life-threatening challenges compromised Kiara’s day-to-day existence. Honor and ethics led to miscommunications that resulted in confusion and hurt, followed by extreme and intense expectations. She needed all her strength and faith in her abilities when she was commissioned to perform her duties in a far-off and dangerous land, putting Kiara’s renowned talents and safety to the ultimate test. But her determination made her succeed. Kiara was determined to get the upper hand.

Book excerpt: Good Ol' Pete's Hood-Raising Adventures: Whitmore's Creek is a short story about an American family, the Whitmores, who were privileged to inherit generational wealth by means of a flourishing cropping industry since the mid-eighteenth century. Now that we are in the twenty-first century, an ominous 110-year-old curse that has desecrated the Whitmores' private estate is unveiled by a secret coalition. Strategically, these vigilantes organize a fight in pursuit for justice in reclaiming the deserted property as the Whitmore descendants' rightful inheritance. Arising from the shadows, critters join together to eradicate the elusive creatures, which ravaged the land of the Whitmore estate. The story of the Whitmore family's anguish and the ominous occurrences on the island resulting from their restless souls is narrated by a "down-to-earth" Black American teenage girl who rides in a big rig with her furry companion and her dad named Russ. The young teen has major depressive disorder (MDD) and general anxiety disorder (GAD) and is grateful for receiving mental health treatment by means of group counseling. Frequently, the teen utilizes her faith and the tools she learns in the group sessions to help reduce her disorder symptoms. She appreciates having a family and best friend who are a great source of emotional support. The teen's family appears to have a unique relationship with Ol' Pete, who is a Peterbilt truck and who embodies the angelic spirit of the previous owner. The big rig and his quirky friends serve as the family's protector during many hair-raising events throughout the story. The teen joins her dad on an adventure down South to pick up her best friend. The crew is looking forward to a relaxing trip returning to the north when destiny intervenes. Suddenly, a foreboding occurrence, which leads the crew to the Whitmore estate, has foiled their original plans. So sit tight as the teen shares with you her mysterious adventure with Ol' Pete as they all face many perils of haunting occurrences at the island of Whitmore's Creek. We hope you and a special loved one will find Good Ol' Pete and his zany friends' ghoulish adventures on the creepy island enlightening.
