Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the vantage point of eighty years, a highly regarded scientist and theologian surveys the full spectrum of critical issues between science and theologyJohn Polkinghorne, an international figure known both for his contributions to the field of theoretical elementary particle physics and for his work as a theologian, has over the years filled a bookshelf with writings devoted to specific topics in science and religion. In this new book, he undertakes for the first time a survey of all the major issues at the intersection of science and religion, concentrating on what he considers the essential insights for each. Clearly and without assuming prior knowledge, he addresses causality, cosmology, evolution, consciousness, natural theology, divine providence, revelation, and scripture. Each chapter also provides references to his other books in which more detailed treatments of specific issues can be found. For those who are new to what Polkinghorne calls "one of the most significant interdisciplinary interactions of our time," this volume serves as an excellent introduction. For readers already familiar with John Polkinghorne's books, this latest is a welcome reminder of the breadth of his thought and the subtlety of his approach in the quest for truthful understanding.

This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key to the Science of Theology is Parley P. Pratt's all-embracing account of religion's impact on everything in day to day life. The author discusses religion, science, and the meaning of life in a passionate and concise way. Pratt's insights into the importance of religion and the presence of the Holy Ghost in our lives has lost none of its poignant luster with the passage of time. We discover here answers to all manner of questions concerning the dizzying pace of scientific advancement, and the core spiritual principles which all good Christians - be they Mormon or otherwise - must cleave to in pursuit of a sublime life well-lived. All kinds of philosophical concepts are brought to the fore by Pratt, whose learning and researches are of stunning profundity. Topics include the spiritual progress of mankind over the ages, the various attributes of the heavenly afterlife, and the origin and destiny of the universe around us. Although he wrote an ambitious work, Pratt never struggles to explain his wide-ranging points, which are delivered with genuine warmth and passion. Parley P. Pratt was an early figure in the Church of the Latter Day Saints, whose Mormon doctrines became guiding principles for many members of the church. Public spirited, he oversaw the construction of one of Utah's first roads, while also tending to spiritual matters through preaching locally and throughout a mission to Great Britain from 1839 to 1841.
Book Synopsis The Territories of Science and Religion by : Peter Harrison
Download or read book The Territories of Science and Religion written by Peter Harrison and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conflict between science and religion seems indelible, even eternal. Surely two such divergent views of the universe have always been in fierce opposition? Actually, that’s not the case, says Peter Harrison: our very concepts of science and religion are relatively recent, emerging only in the past three hundred years, and it is those very categories, rather than their underlying concepts, that constrain our understanding of how the formal study of nature relates to the religious life. In The Territories of Science and Religion, Harrison dismantles what we think we know about the two categories, then puts it all back together again in a provocative, productive new way. By tracing the history of these concepts for the first time in parallel, he illuminates alternative boundaries and little-known relations between them—thereby making it possible for us to learn from their true history, and see other possible ways that scientific study and the religious life might relate to, influence, and mutually enrich each other. A tour de force by a distinguished scholar working at the height of his powers, The Territories of Science and Religion promises to forever alter the way we think about these fundamental pillars of human life and experience.

Download or read book Theology in a New Key written by Robert McAfee Brown and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1978-01-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I do not think there are any issues on the theological and human scene more important than the ones liberation theologians are raising," says Robert McAfee Brown. In this book Brown explores how we can respond to liberation theology without condescension, arrogance, or co-optation. He surveys in detail the kind of challenges to North American Christians issued by South American theologians. He then calls upon the church to work to make itself what it ought to be and to take sides politically in support of human rights.

Book excerpt: Legacy LDS Audiobook Foundation is proud to present "Key to the Science of Theology", by Parley P. Pratt, with additional faith-building content for the modern reader.Parley P. Pratt began to work on The Key to the Science of Theology in San Francisco in August 1851, just before leaving for his mission to Chile. He continued writing it while in Chile. He finished the manuscript upon his return to Utah in 1853. The manuscript remained unpublished, however, until 1855 when Parley found a publisher in England. Parley's book represented a lifetime of thought and built on ideas first propounded in Pratt's earlier writings, especially missionary tracts stemming from his years in England. The impact of The Key to the Science of Theology was unparalleled. One Latter-day Saint diarist of the 19th century observed: "We had every encouragement to read the Church publications: The Voice of Warning; the Pearl of Great Price; and Key to Theology." That Parley's writings would be on the same footing as the Pearl of Great Price, canonized in 1880, indicates the special status his works held among early Church leaders and members. During the twenty-two years following its publication, a time when almost no other Church books were being written, The Key to the Science of Theology went through three more editions, suggesting that the work had the tacit approval of Brigham Young. Indeed, in 1875, Voice of Warning and Key to the Science of Theology were the first two titles mentioned in the Church's Deseret News list of "Books worth Reading". Parley's Key to the Science of Theology continues to be a book worth reading today, providing the modern reader insight into the early gospel thinking of Church leaders.
