Book excerpt: In June 1940, Britain's front line against the German armies was the coast of Kent and Sussex. Across the Channel, Hitler's forces gathered, preparing for invasion, as the Home Forces struggled desperately to recover from the disaster and miracle of Dunkirk. Occupation of these islands was nearer than for almost nine hundred years. Kent and Sussex 1940, tells the story of the communities that found themselves in the front line, placing their experience within the context of huge historic events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Aviation Heritage Trail series, the airfields and interest in this book are concentrated in a particular area - in this case Kent, Surrey, East Sussex, Essex and Greater London. The South east of England emerged from six years of war with a rich diversity of RAF bomber and fighter airfields used by the 2nd Tactical Air Force, both before and after the D-Day landings. Much of this proud legacy is now threatening to disappear. However, the tourist can combine visits to an abundance of disused and active airfields, country houses and museums with countless attractions, imaginative locations and broadland and coastal hideaways that have no equal. The airfields and other places of interest include Northolt, Manston, Sculthorp, Dunsfold, Swanton Morley, Hunsdon, Gravesend, Detling, Biggin Hill, Kenley, Redhill, Gatwick, Heston, Hornchurch, Chailey, Coolham, Horne, West Malling and Newchurch. This book looks at the history and personalities associated with each base, what remains today and explores the favourite local wartime haunts where aircrew and ground crew would have sought well-deserved entertainment and relaxation. Other museums and places that are relevant will also be described and general directions on how to get them included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a quiet churchyard in Amersham is the grave of an airman who lost his life fighting in the skies over southern England in October 1940. The author happened to come across this grave in 1998 and after some initial enquiries discovered that nobody in the town was aware that 'One of the Few' Battle of Britain pilots lay at rest in their parish. He determined to discover more about the short life of this hero and undertook several years of research to piece together this biography. Peter joined the RAF in November 1937 on a four-year short service commission at the age of twenty. In July 1938 he was posted to No. 87 Squadron being equipped with the then new Hawker Hurricane fighter. After war had been declared the Squadron was posted to Boos in France in support of the British Expeditionary Force, becoming operational on 10 September 1939. In March 1940 he was transferred to 501 Squadron in Tangmere and then again in April to 74 Squadron as an operational pilot at Hornchurch, equipped with Spitfires. It was from here that he fought his part in the Battle of Britain. For those who may have forgotten 'The Few', this stirring and yet sad story tells of the all-too-short life of one of the 544 young men who gave everything to defend Great Britain from Nazi aggression.

Book excerpt: Shortly after the end of the Second World War, the United Kingdom was described as one vast aircraft carrier anchored off the coast of Europe. During a seven year period 500 airfields were constructed to serve the needs first of the RAF and later the USAAF as they carried the war to German-occupied Europe. The airfields that were constructed took many different forms from training airfields and Advanced Landing Grounds to grass fighter airstrips and vast complexes used to accommodate heavy bombers. This book charts the history of each Second World War airfield in and around the UK providing a unique insight in to the construction, operational life and post-war history of each airfield. Alongside detailing the history of each airfield, this work comprehensively records the details of each unit that operated from airfields around the UK. The information provided in this meticulously researched book is supported by a wealth of 690 photographs providing an illustration into the life of each wartime station.

Book excerpt: Having lived in Eastbourne all my life, over 60 years now, I have noticed many changes - some good, some not so good. Shops and businesses that were thriving concerns used and loved by most - Louis G. Ford and Woolworths to name but two - are now just distant memories. Being able to jump on to the rear platform a moving bus as it passed by or to have a choice of five or six town centre cinemas to visit are pleasures no longer available. The smell, sight and sound of snorting, hissing steam engines at the station are now long gone - as is the opportunity to catch one of these on a Saturday morning to take you directly to Birmingham or the North of England. Thankfully, photographers over the last 100 years or more had the presence of mind to capture these images, so that these scenes need not be completely forgotten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'It's Odd, The Thing's One Remembers' traces the life of Nina Ann Bentley (later Nina Ann Smith) from an idyllic childhood in 1920s England, through her service in the Royal Air Force during World War II, and on into the far more challenging decades of the second-half of the twentieth century in Canada, America, and Mexico. While her life parallels that of many thousands of women who moved across the Atlantic in search of a better life after the Second World War, there are a few extra angles – ‘the darts which fate aimed at me and adventures on which I was led’ – including the birth of two disabled children, and the struggles to deal with new countries and ways of life. There is the excitement, and frustration, of living in Washington during the Kennedy years; and the sustained tension of being on the front lines of the cold war with a husband serving on the Defence Research Staff. There is the unexpected joy of a third stage of life in the mountains and coastal villages of Mexico; followed by the challenges of caring for a paralyzed husband and an ageing disabled daughter. And woven throughout, is the story of a young love that shadows her the rest of her life.
