Book Synopsis The Last Wish by : Andrzej Sapkowski
Download or read book The Last Wish written by Andrzej Sapkowski and published by Gollancz. This book was released on 2010-08-19 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geralt is a witcher, a man whose magic powers, enhanced by long training and a mysterious elixir, have made him a brilliant fighter and a merciless assassin. Yet he is no ordinary murderer: his targets are the multifarious monsters and vile fiends that ravage the land and attack the innocent. He roams the country seeking assignments, but gradually comes to realise that while some of his quarry are unremittingly vile, vicious grotesques, others are the victims of sin, evil or simple naivety. One reviewer said: 'This book is a sheer delight. It is beautifully written, full of vitality and endlessly inventive: its format, with half a dozen episodes and intervening rest periods for both the hero and the reader, allows for a huge range of characters, scenarios and action. It's thought-provoking without being in the least dogmatic, witty without descending to farce and packed with sword fights without being derivative. The dialogue sparkles; characters morph almost imperceptibly from semi-cliche to completely original; nothing is as it first seems. Sapkowski succeeds in seamlessly welding familiar ideas, unique settings and delicious twists of originality: his Beauty wants to rip the throat out of a sensitive Beast; his Snow White seeks vengeance on all and sundry, his elves are embittered and vindictive. It's easily one of the best things I've read in ages.'
Book Synopsis The Buddha and the Borderline by : Kiera Van Gelder
Download or read book The Buddha and the Borderline written by Kiera Van Gelder and published by New Harbinger Publications. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kiera Van Gelder's first suicide attempt at the age of twelve marked the onset of her struggles with drug addiction, depression, post-traumatic stress, self-harm, and chaotic romantic relationships-all of which eventually led to doctors' belated diagnosis of borderline personality disorder twenty years later. The Buddha and the Borderline is a window into this mysterious and debilitating condition, an unblinking portrayal of one woman's fight against the emotional devastation of borderline personality disorder. This haunting, intimate memoir chronicles both the devastating period that led to Kiera's eventual diagnosis and her inspirational recovery through therapy, Buddhist spirituality, and a few online dates gone wrong. Kiera's story sheds light on the private struggle to transform suffering into compassion for herself and others, and is essential reading for all seeking to understand what it truly means to recover and reclaim the desire to live.
Book Synopsis Cybersecurity in France by : Philippe Baumard
Download or read book Cybersecurity in France written by Philippe Baumard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief presents the overarching framework in which each nation is developing its own cyber-security policy, and the unique position adopted by France. Modern informational crises have penetrated most societal arenas, from healthcare, politics, economics to the conduct of business and welfare. Witnessing a convergence between information warfare and the use of “fake news”, info-destabilization, cognitive warfare and cyberwar, this book brings a unique perspective on modern cyberwarfare campaigns, escalation and de-escalation of cyber-conflicts. As organizations are more and more dependent on information for the continuity and stability of their operations, they also become more vulnerable to cyber-destabilization, either genuine, or deliberate for the purpose of gaining geopolitical advantage, waging wars, conducting intellectual theft and a wide range of crimes. Subsequently, the regulation of cyberspace has grown into an international effort where public, private and sovereign interests often collide. By analyzing the particular case of France national strategy and capabilities, the authors investigate the difficulty of obtaining a global agreement on the regulation of cyber-warfare. A review of the motives for disagreement between parties suggests that the current regulation framework is not adapted to the current technological change in the cybersecurity domain. This book suggests a paradigm shift in handling and anchoring cyber-regulation into a new realm of behavioral and cognitive sciences, and their application to machine learning and cyber-defense.
Book Synopsis Obama and Kenya by : Matthew Carotenuto
Download or read book Obama and Kenya written by Matthew Carotenuto and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barack Obama’s political ascendancy has focused considerable global attention on the history of Kenya generally and the history of the Luo community particularly. From politicos populating the blogosphere and bookshelves in the U.S and Kenya, to tourists traipsing through Obama’s ancestral home, a variety of groups have mobilized new readings of Kenya’s past in service of their own ends. Through narratives placing Obama into a simplified, sweeping narrative of anticolonial barbarism and postcolonial “tribal” violence, the story of the United States president’s nuanced relationship to Kenya has been lost amid stereotypical portrayals of Africa. At the same time, Kenyan state officials have aimed to weave Obama into the contested narrative of Kenyan nationhood. Matthew Carotenuto and Katherine Luongo argue that efforts to cast Obama as a “son of the soil” of the Lake Victoria basin invite insights into the politicized uses of Kenya’s past. Ideal for classroom use and directed at a general readership interested in global affairs, Obama and Kenya offers an important counterpoint to the many popular but inaccurate texts about Kenya’s history and Obama’s place in it as well as focused, thematic analyses of contemporary debates about ethnic politics, “tribal” identities, postcolonial governance, and U.S. African relations.

Book Synopsis Sympathy for Jonah by : David Benjamin Blower
Download or read book Sympathy for Jonah written by David Benjamin Blower and published by Resource Publications (CA). This book was released on 2016-07-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Jonah is sacred to all three Abrahamic faiths and remains a recognizable legend even in the most secularized corners of the West. And yet the maritime prophet's story has been trivialized as a quaint children's tale, his character has been blasted by unsympathetic commentators, and even his alleged tomb has now been destroyed by Islamic State militants who, in 2014, took the city of Mosul on the Nineveh Plains. Now that Nineveh is once again in the grip of tyrannical violence and communities across the West and the Middle East are deep in a time of discord and soul-searching, we might do well to recover the story of Jonah, a guiding light, who marches into the very heart of empire and confronts it with the radical politics of the kingdom of God, even as his own certainties are shaken to the core. ""David Blower has written a marvelous reflection on what may be the Bible's most subversive and misunderstood story. Not only are his insights incisive and needed, his writing is a delight to read."" --Brian D. McLaren, author/speaker/activist ""I picked it up, started to read it and couldn't stop. . . . It's an irresistible, fanciful, terrifying book: brilliant, beautiful, and colourful, but brutal, awful, and confronting. . . . This is The Gospel According To Jonah for today."" --Dave Andrews, Author of Plan Be, and Christi-Anarchy ""Elegaic in its writing and prophetic in its message, Blower's study brings the ancient Biblical myth of Jonah back to life with fresh relevance for our times, especially so with Jonah's city so much in the news, and for the same reasons as before: that to say, Nineveh, or Mosul in northern Iraq."" --Alastair McIntosh, Professor, School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh, author of Soil and Soul and Spiritual Activism ""Identifying the empire--not the big fish--as the real beast in the book, this powerful and poetic re-telling of the Jonah story brings a familiar tale to life in fresh ways, and invites readers to face the challenge of engaging creatively and vulnerably with the powers that be."" --Stuart Murray Williams, Author of The Naked Anabaptist, Multi-Voiced Church and Church After Christendom ""I'm still recovering from the prophetic body blow of Blower's first book, Kingdom vs. Empire, but here he is again, ready for round two. His latest is about as unsettling as it gets. I've been following David's work for some time now. I know how he operates, but he still catches me off guard. So put down whatever you're reading, pick up this book, and brace yourself!"" --Tim Nash, Nomad Podcast ""David Benjamin Blower brings us a renewed song of hope--in the shape of Jonah wrapped up in a whale. This is a work of imagination and erudition as well as an elegy that speaks of a way of being that for so long has eluded concerned Christians. At last God has given us a prophet who dares to tell us like it is. Listen up--let Jonah help us to see our task as Christians in troubled times. Read and listen to David Benjamin Blower if you dare--but with assurance that grace is so much in abundance our fretfulness will be transformed into passion."" --Ann Morisy, author of Beyond the Good Samaritan and Journeying Out David Benjamin Blower is a writer, musician, and theological agitator from Birmingham, UK. He is a prolific recording artist and the author of Kingdom vs. Empire (2013).

Book excerpt: "My body burns for him. It would be so easy to take him, to take what he offers me, to mate him. But I cannot. I must do my duty to my people." Reece knows the Dragons are dying out. He's given up hope of ever taking a mate for himself, as the sacred male omegas capable of carrying dragon young were hunted to extinction. But when Reece stumbles upon Matthew Stiles and recognizes him for the sacred omega he is, Reece knows that he must do everything in his power to protect the man - the only spark of hope for his race. Matthew can't deny that Mr. Tall, Dark, and Scrumptious is gorgeous and intense, but right now? He doesn't have time for distractions. He's more concerned about finding a job - any job in his field. A Master's in Paleontology doesn't go as far as it used to. The last thing that Matthew expects when he's invited to a secret dig is for Reece to show up at the hotel he is staying in - but when Reece saves from him being attacked by a group of men calling themselves the Templars, Matthew can't help but to start taking Reece's wild claims more seriously. Reece is only 800 years old - not old enough to breed. He should adhere to his people's laws, relinquishing his claim, and take Matthew before the dragon elders. Matthew ought to run far away from any man who claims to be a mythological beast. But when sparks flare, will the pull of their bodies be enough to forge a connection of the heart? Sacred Omega is the first book in the Guardian Dragons series. With rich worldbuilding and a satisfying happily ever after, this book is scorchingly hot, packed with adventure, and sets the stage for an epic struggle between the bonds of love and the darkness of hate.
