Download or read book Papa, Play for Me written by Mickey Katz and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heartwarming autobiography of a vintage Jewish comedian, with a new introduction highlighting his relevance to contemporary culture and cultural studies. Mickey Katz (1909 - 1985), a Jewish comedian and musician, is best known for his parodies — "Theme from Moulin Rouge (Where is My Heart)" became "Where is My Pants?", "(How Much is that) Doggie in the Window" became "Pickle in the Window" — incorporating Yiddish words and accents. His very first English-Yiddish recording, "Haim afen Range," was an instant hit and he went on to record ninety singles and ten albums for RCA and Capitol. Father of performer Joel Grey and grandfather of actress Jennifer Grey, Mickey Katz's irreverent blend of Jewish story-telling, vaudeville routines, African-American jazz, Jewish klezmer and popular dance band music have had a lasting impact on American culture. In this rollicking autobiography, first published in 1977 and reissued here with a new introduction, the King of the Borscht Capades talks frankly about politics, music, family, identity and show business.

Book Synopsis Hunting Paradise by : Bob Henneberger
Download or read book Hunting Paradise written by Bob Henneberger and published by Tempt Press. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Hell can be portrayed as a vivid tangible landscape, in reality it's a mental backdrop. Loss of self respect and worth as well as a loss of purpose can plunge a person into his own hell on many levels. This tale explores the theme of loss and redemption by following two characters separated in time by four generations, each man dealing with a life crisis. One story, set in the later half of the nineteenth century, follows a white orphan boy raised by people of mixed race. He has never reconciled his self hatred, nor his love-hate relationship with the land that formed him. Set in the current time, the parallel story begins as four friends go on a hunting trip together. An unexpected storm triggers an accident, and leaves the four men stranded. The two stories intertwine through the experiences of the contemporary character, John, and his direct ancestor, Paul. During the contemporary hunting group's search for a way out of the unfamiliar woods, they are attacked, apparently by a group of ragged men dressed in nineteenth century clothes. John is wounded. As his friends try in vain to find civilization, John realizes that the increasingly strange events stem from a one hundred and fifty year old conflict that somehow centers around him. Whether he is hallucinating from injuries sustained in the original van wreck, or from injuries one hundred and fifty years old, he must resolve his ancestor's past conflicts to resolve his own.
Book Synopsis I Was a Mad Man by : Richard L. Gilbert
Download or read book I Was a Mad Man written by Richard L. Gilbert and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2013-04-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Greatest Generation came marching home, they buckled right down to work. I WAS A MAD MAN is the story of one of those men. Richard L. Gilbert, born in New York, devoted Giants fan in the cheap seats of Coogan's Bluff, CCNY grad, soldier, returned home in 1946. He needed a job. He found one in advertising. You don’t know his name (yet) but you'll recognize his work. In a 40-year career Richard Gilbert and his intrepid staff of copywriters, designers and artists at Gilbert Advertising changed how Americans thought about fur coats, foreign languages, cars, perfume and the Vietnam War. Gilbert Advertising wasn't the biggest shop on Madison Avenue but it was influential beyond its size. From encouraging the Metropolitan Opera to offer less than full season subscriptions (unheard of till 1971) in the Met's first ad campaign; to persuading people Renault had mended its ways (a Renault for the people who swore they’d never buy another); to tweaking the tail of the Russian Bear (Premier Kosygin, we'd like to give you a free tuxedo); London Fog rainwear; Berlitz Language school, and Club Med, Gilbert Advertising was the creator of iconic pop culture images that remain fresh and persuasive years later. Along the way Richard Gilbert spearheaded the ad campaign that helped end the Vietnam War (The First American Ballot on the War; Some Toys Hate War) and helped litigate protection of commercial free speech. Armed only with a pencil, and the indomitable American can-do spirit, Richard Gilbert marched up Madison Avenue into history. This is his story, and ours.
