Book excerpt: Poetry. LGBT Studies. "This writing is the New Brave. Few writers have so given in to the entropic forces that disentangle our bodies in the end, while at the same time furiously pooling social content into observable patterns. And there are thousands! Millions! Billions! In biological systems, DNA nucleotides are linked by enzymes in order to make long, chainlike, polynucleotides of defined sequence. In writing, the sub-social is linked by signs that make ringlets of undefined sequence. Only we can make think to make thought from it. It cannot be conceived of in advance. It cannot be found on the web. No se vende ni se compra. edwards' radical neo-communitarian impulse is something that's blood-borne, but not bloody, something that's keen & observant, but not oculocentric. Like Antonin Artaud, edwards sought to make Writing = Life"--Rodrigo Toscano. Venn Diagram Productions is the collaborative intersection between Belladonna Books and Litmus Press. This imprint actualizes our mutual commitment to publishing innovative, cross-genre, multicultural, feminist and queer work by writers and artists working beyond and between borders.

"Paratexts and processing suggestions stream through Kari Edwards's IDUNA, spilling the language into frames set as much by procedural constraints as by the conventions of any inventory of poetic verse...A machinic drive echoes in this work as a human, subjective voice struggles to come through the registers of current language events, noise, news, records, communications...Form embodies possibilities enabled by the instructions of forced justification, font shifts, hard returns, tabs, chunked blocks, and other basic elements of text processing..."-- Johanna Drucker.

Book excerpt: Poetry. Women's Studies. LGBT Studies. Hybrid Genre. Transgender Studies. Winner of the 2016 Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Poetry. Part prose poem, part disruptive narrative, succubus in my pocket is a posthumous masterpiece of textual flux and cultural critique from pathbreaking trans woman poet kari edwards. The author described it as a "troubling of the habitual life story at the edge of the recognizable." "kari edwards's SUCCUBUS IN MY POCKET is a masterwork against mastering, a tarrying recursive, fretting over how to write from life when life is so relentlessly displaced by its commodity form, a palinode to identity from its extimite extrusions, sloughing on and off simulacra, flaying the skim off 'events, ' relooping seriality and tracing narrative's affective ruses and too predictable disappointments. Talking to the taxman and the war machine and sex gender and the symbolic about poetry while turning a trick or laying down to hallucinate a line of flight rather than consolidate a happy story we might now call homonormativity or neoliberalism or white supremacy, SUCCUBUS is a most delicate and pissed and sad inhabitation of the available options and of their exorbitantly vital refusal." Book excerpt: An anthology of poems by trans writers that explores the relationship between explicitly political desires and the formal inventions possible to enact or imagine those desires.Who is writing formally exciting, explicitly political poetry right now? Editors, Andrea Abi-Karam and Kay Gabriel bring together contributions by an intergenerational constellation of radical trans writers to both answer this question and enable writing in these modes. Writing in dialogue with emancipatory political movements, against capital, racism, empire, borders, prisons, ecological devastation; the writers here imagine an altogether different, overturned world in poems that pursue the particular and multiple trans relationships to desire, embodiment, housing, sex, ecology, history, pop culture and the working day. The editors offer this anthology as an experiment: how far can literature written and/or collected from an identitarian standpoint go as a fellow traveler with social movements and revolutionary demands?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychological science now reveals much about the law's response to crime. This is the first text to bridge both fields as it presents psychological research and theory relevant to each phase of criminal justice processes. The materials are divided into three parts that follow a comprehensive introduction. The introduction analyses the major legal themes and values that guide criminal justice processes and points to the many psychological issues they raise. Part I examines how the legal system investigates and apprehends criminal suspects. Topics range from the identification, searching and seizing to the questioning of suspects. Part II focuses on how the legal system establishes guilt. To do so, it centres on the process of bargaining and pleading cases, assembling juries, providing expert witnesses, and considering defendants' mental states. Part III focuses on the disposition of cases. Namely, that part highlights the process of sentencing defendants, predicting criminal tendencies, treating and controlling offenders, and determining eligibility for such extreme punishments as the death penalty. The format seeks to give readers a feeling for the entire criminal justice process and for the role psychological science has and can play in it.

Book excerpt: Collecting the best of the underground blog Weird Sister, these unapologetic and insightful essays link contemporary feminism to literature and pop culture. Launched in 2014, Weird Sister proudly staked out a corner of the internet where feminist writers could engage with the literary and popular culture that excited or enraged them. The blog made space amid book websites dominated by white male editors and contributors, and also committed to covering literary topics in-depth when larger feminist outlets rarely could. Throughout its decade-long run, Weird Sister served as an early platform for some of contemporary literature’s most striking voices, naming itself a website that “speaks its mind and snaps its gum and doesn’t apologize.” Edited by founder Marisa Crawford, The Weird Sister Collection brings together the work of longtime contributors such as Morgan Parker, Christopher Soto, Soleil Ho, Julián Delgado Lopera, Virgie Tovar, Jennif(f)er Tamayo, and more, alongside new original essays. Offering nuanced insight into contemporary and historical literature, in conversation with real-life and timely social issues, these pieces mark a transitional and transformative moment in online and feminist writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary American poetry has plenty to offer new readers, and plenty more for those who already follow it. Yet its difficulty—and sheer variety—leaves many readers puzzled or overwhelmed. The critic, scholar, and poet Stephanie Burt sets out to help. Beginning in the early 1980s, where critical consensus ends, Burt canvasses American poetry of the past four decades, from the headline-making urgency of Claudia Rankine’s Citizen to the stark pathos of Louise Glück, the limitless energy of Juan Felipe Herrera, and the erotic provocations of D. A. Powell. The Poem Is You: Sixty Contemporary American Poems and How to Read Them is a guide to the diverse magnificences of American poetry today. It presents a wide range of poems selected by Burt for this volume, each accompanied by an original essay explaining how a given poem works, why it matters, and how the poem speaks to other parts of art and culture. Included here are some classroom classics (by Ashbery, Komunyakaa, Hass), less famous poems by very famous poets (Glück, Kay Ryan), and poems by prizewinning poets near the start of their careers (such as Brandon Som), and by others who are not—or not yet—well known. The Poem Is You will appeal to poets, teachers, and students, but it is intended especially for readers who want to learn more about contemporary American poetry but who have not known where or how to start. It describes what American poets have fashioned for one another, and what they can give us today.

Book excerpt: There have been many iterations of the Joan of Arc story: "testimonies," books, and films have attempted to capture the drama of one of history's most famous gender warriors. But few, if any, have been undertaken by an author who met her subject matter with such recognition and insight, a fellow warrior, a rebel in kind. kari edwards, a transgender activist and key figure in the Bay Area experimental writing scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s, was provocative and prescient in her concern for the way that language inflects, inflicts, and regulates gender norms. Her persistent efforts to break linguistic binaries and barriers have given her texts an ongoing urgency after her untimely death in 2006.This book brings to life an important document discovered in the late poet's archive at the Poetry Collection at the University of Buffalo. The several notebooks and partial typescript (as well as various plans and notes) of edwards' unfinished manuscript, uncovered by Tina Zigon, offer an intriguing glimpse of a major new direction in edwards' work, one in which her avant-garde instincts are channeled through rigorous research on this medieval figure. In this retelling - better to say "remixing" - of Joan of Arc's fateful trial and martyrdom, we find the major theme so richly laced throughout edwards' oeuvre: the courageous (but also depressingly mundane) struggle against the stifling regulation of language, appearance, and norms. edwards's Joan of Arc, even in its incomplete and abbreviated form (which Zigon calls a "possible version" of edwards's manuscript), offers an exciting engagement with one of the medieval period's most challenging and mysterious figures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnic conflict has been the driving force of wars all over the world, yet it remains an enigma. What is it about ethnicity that breaks countries apart and drives people to acts of savage violence against their lifelong neighbors? Stuart Kaufman rejects the notion of permanent "ancient hatreds" as the answer. Dissatisfied as well with a purely rationalist explanation, he finds the roots of ethnic violence in myths and symbols, the stories ethnic groups tell about who they are. Ethnic wars, Kaufman argues, result from the politics of these myths and symbols—appeals to flags and faded glories that aim to stir emotions rather than to address interests. Popular hostility based on these myths impels groups to follow extremist leaders invoking such emotion-laden ethnic symbols. If ethnic domination becomes their goal, ethnic war is the likely result. Kaufman examines contemporary ethnic wars in the Caucasus and southeastern Europe. Drawing on information from a variety of sources, including visits to the regions and dozens of personal interviews, he demonstrates that diplomacy and economic incentives are not enough to prevent or end ethnic wars. The key to real conflict resolution is peacebuilding—the often-overlooked effort by nongovernmental organizations to change hostile attitudes at both the elite and the grassroots levels.

Book excerpt: From “one of the great (greatest?) contemporary popular writers on economics” (Tyler Cowen) comes a smart, lively, and encouraging rethinking of how to use statistics. Today we think statistics are the enemy, numbers used to mislead and confuse us. That’s a mistake, Tim Harford says in The Data Detective. We shouldn’t be suspicious of statistics—we need to understand what they mean and how they can improve our lives: they are, at heart, human behavior seen through the prism of numbers and are often “the only way of grasping much of what is going on around us.” If we can toss aside our fears and learn to approach them clearly—understanding how our own preconceptions lead us astray—statistics can point to ways we can live better and work smarter. As “perhaps the best popular economics writer in the world” (New Statesman), Tim Harford is an expert at taking complicated ideas and untangling them for millions of readers. In The Data Detective, he uses new research in science and psychology to set out ten strategies for using statistics to erase our biases and replace them with new ideas that use virtues like patience, curiosity, and good sense to better understand ourselves and the world. As a result, The Data Detective is a big-idea book about statistics and human behavior that is fresh, unexpected, and insightful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans are losing touch with reality. On virtually every issue, from climate change to immigration, tens of millions of Americans have opinions and beliefs wildly at odds with fact, rendering them unable to think sensibly about politics. In How America Lost Its Mind, Thomas E. Patterson explains the rise of a world of “alternative facts” and the slow-motion cultural and political calamity unfolding around us. We don’t have to search far for the forces that are misleading us and tearing us apart: politicians for whom division is a strategy; talk show hosts who have made an industry of outrage; news outlets that wield conflict as a marketing tool; and partisan organizations and foreign agents who spew disinformation to advance a cause, make a buck, or simply amuse themselves. The consequences are severe. How America Lost Its Mind maps a political landscape convulsed with distrust, gridlock, brinksmanship, petty feuding, and deceptive messaging. As dire as this picture is, and as unlikely as immediate relief might be, Patterson sees a way forward and underscores its urgency. A call to action, his book encourages us to wrest institutional power from ideologues and disruptors and entrust it to sensible citizens and leaders, to restore our commitment to mutual tolerance and restraint, to cleanse the Internet of fake news and disinformation, and to demand a steady supply of trustworthy and relevant information from our news sources. As philosopher Hannah Arendt wrote decades ago, the rise of demagogues is abetted by “people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists.” In How America Lost Its Mind, Thomas E. Patterson makes a passionate case for fully and fiercely engaging on the side of truth and mutual respect in our present arms race between fact and fake, unity and division, civility and incivility.
