Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Book Traces The Origin And Growth Of Kamala Das As A Poet Through Successive Stages. Mrs. Das, Who Received No Formal Education, No Pompous University Degree, Stands On Her Own Merit And Is Placed On The Pinnacle Of Reputation And Distinction Among Indo-English Poets Of Today. Her Scintillating Verse Has That Irresistible Force And Tilting Rhythm In It Which Captures The Reader S Attention Immediately. The Reader Often Feels That He Is In The Presence Of A Writer Who Is Highly Gifted And Skilful, Largely Emotional And Subjective, And Who Is Ever Celebrating The Charms Of The Body And The Hungers Of The Sex, Without Getting Him Bored Even For A While. The Poetess Admirably Comes Through The Dictum Of William Wordsworth When He Pronounced That Poetry Is The Spontaneous Overflow Of Powerful Feelings. The Present Book Endeavours To Combine Biography And Criticism And Makes A Critical-Analytical Study Of Mrs. Das S Verse To Date. It Is Not So Much A Chronological Survey Of Her Literary Output As An Investigation Into The Aspects Of Her Poetry. There Are Already Books, Articles And Reviews On Kamala Das, But This One Is Unique In Evaluating Her Poetic Worth In The Light Of Her Work And In Ascertaining Her Position Amongst Contemporary Indo-English Poets. This May Well Claim To Be The First Of Its Kind In Making A Pointed Approach To Diverse Subjects Of Her Verse, To Her Being A Confessional Poet, To Her Conspicuous Tragic Vision Of Art, And In Critically Examining Some Of Her Significant Poems And In Undertaking An Appraisal Of Her Novel, Alphabet Of Lust (1976), And Of Her Prose Works. It Is, Thus, Designed For The Benefit Of The Teachers Of English Literature And The Taught Alike.

Book excerpt: First published in Malayalam in 1973, My Story, Kamala Das' sensational autobiography, shocked readers with its total disregard for mindless conventions and its fearless articulation of a subject still considered taboo. Depicting the author's intensely personal experiences in her passage to womanhood and shedding light on the hypocrisies that informed traditional society, this memoir was far ahead of its time and is now acknowledged as a bona fide masterpiece.

Book excerpt: This unusual volume brings together two disparate voices, of friends who met and conversed over many years, in different cities and at different stages in their life, both of whom turned to poetry in moments both anxious and happy. The poems by Kamala Das include the very last one she wrote before death claimed her, and in many ways Suresh Kohli's work reflects similar concerns, with death and distances, both physical and emotional.

Asian Studies. "For over 40 years, Kamala Das, considered India's 'Poet Laureate, ' has set a bold new tone for India's women, poor and disenfranchised. Now her message comes to the United States in her first American book--ENCOUNTERING KAMALA. When no one else dared, a young woman named Kamala Das took a poetic stance for those who had no voice in India. Her powerful words helped slowly change India's views on the role of women--to the point where its first female president was recently elected. Now in this book, Kamala speaks to all, touching on elements common to people worldwide: love, hope, despair, religion, and old age. ENCOUNTERING KAMALA: SELECTIONS FROM THE POETRY OF KAMALA DAS, INDIA'S POWERFUL VOICE FOR CHANGE features works previously published around the world, plus poems for her new audience. Also included are original drawings, photographs, and her personal correspondence with Andrew Arkin, longtime friend and publisher of this book. Encountering Kamala captures the courageous spirit of a Nobel Prize-nominated poet. "Kamala Das's poems epitomise the dilemma of the modern Indian woman who attempts to free herself, sexually and domestically, from the role of bondage sanctioned by the past"--The Hindu

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poetry Of Kamala Das Is A Sort Of Psychic Striptease. She Explores Her Psychic Geography With An Exceptional Female Energy And The Capability To Express Her Inimitable Vision Through The Technique Of Sincerity. The Quest For An Emotional Liaison And Her Failure To Establish One Is The Central Burden Of Her Poetry. From The Thematic Standpoint Her Poetry Originates From A Dark End And Performs, In Turn, A Curative Function. The Limited Range Of Her Experience May Account For Her Thematic Staisis But It Turns Out To Be Too Marginal A Point If We Consider The Fire Of Her Creativity. Her Typical Feminine Sensibility And The Confessional Mode Have Been Explored Through Her Obsessive Images, Symbols And The Frank Disarming Manner. With Her Insistence On Self, On Approaching Love With Love And Her Crying When Jilted In It, She Creates The Type Of Poetic Form Which May Adequately Be Called Expressive . In Her Urge To Take A Flight In A Different World And Give A Full Throated Expression To Her Indigenous Self She Projects Her Distinct Individuality. Kamala Das Composes The Raga Of Self In Her Poetry, A Symphony Of The Discordant Notes Of Life.

Book excerpt: This is an anthology of short poems, fiction and nonfiction pieces by Kamala Das To the Indian reader of fiction and poetry, Kamala Das (1934-2009) needs no introduction. Her novels, collections of poetry and short stories in English and Malayalam - and indeed her life itself - have both challenged and redefined the boundaries of middle-class morality. Her sensational autobiography, published in English as My Story, created a storm in literary circles and established her as the iconoclast of her generation. Her conversion to Islam in 1999 at the age of sixty-five sent social and literary circles into another tizzy. Wages of Love: Uncollected Writings of Kamala Das brings together stories, plays, poems and non-fiction writing that have previously not been anthologized. While 'The Fair-Skinned Babu' is the sardonic tale of an author who has become a Muslim searching for a contract killer to commission her own killing, 'Neipayasam' is the poignant story of a father feeding his children the delicious dessert prepared by their mother whose death that morning the children are too young to comprehend. In one of her essays, she writes about contesting the parliamentary election in 1984 and, in another, about Khushwant Singh's allegation that she had manipulated her nomination for the Nobel. Expertly compiled by Suresh Kohli, and including a heartfelt introduction by him, Wages of Love revives the free soul and literary genius that was Kamala Das.

She Has Made Enormous Contribution To Indian Poetry In English By Adding A Feminist Dimension To It, Although She Is Not Inclined To Admit It. Perhaps Deriving Her Inspiration From Her Matrilineal Background She Celebrates Woman S Body And Pleads For Its Integrity In Her Poems. She Writes Poetry As Only As Woman Can Write And Takes Pride In The Fact Of Being A Woman And That Is Certainly The Starting Point Of All Kinds Of Feminism. The Present Volume Puts Together Deeply Perceptive Articles Which Study Various Facets Of Her Poetry From Feminist And Other Perspectives And Often With Reference To Her Life, A Confessional Poet That She Is.

Book excerpt: When I was student of English literature in M.A. final, it was an ambition in my mind to write a book on Kamala Das. After hard endeavor I am able to write this book. I am aware of the fact, there are a few books purported to be full length studies of Kamala Das’s poetry available and there are also scores of articles and papers on the various aspects of her poetry that have appeared in literary journals or included in books on Indian writing in English. But the sweep of such publications appear to be very limited. In another words their views about Kamala Das’s poetry seem truncated. In this connection, I would like to cite up a story of six blind men. They went to acknowledge the elephant. Each one touched the different parts of the elephant. They touched the feet, the leg, the ear, the trunk and the tail. Each one was confident in one’s opinion. They quarreled among themselves for the recognition of the elephant. They all were right separately but all were wrong about the complete shape of the elephant. Such is the recognition of Kamala Das among the critics. Most critics agree, she is the poet of Love and Sex. No doubt, she had taken love and sex as objective correlative for her presentation. She has presented the prevailing evils of society. If we concentrate our mind on the writing of the literature, we get particular stimulus and response. We take Valmiki for his historical poetry. This harbinger of worldly Sanskrit literature keeps the pathetic vision for mankind’s destiny. He presents Ram in pathetic situation in course of life. He was exiled, Ravan alloped his wife Sita and in the last phase of his life he submerged in the river Saryu. Whatever may be the case, it is true, there is inspiration in every creative work. Kamala gets inspiration from discordancy of woman’s love. If we take the history of womankind as a writer, we get Love and Sex are deeply delved in the writing, therefore it is wrong to charge Kamala Das for the representation of Love and Sex. Kamala Das’s poetry has remarkable feature of its own. First, it marks the male and female relation in running society of the time in which the writer lives. What she has experienced in her private life, she universalised it for contemporary society. If obscenity is charged with her writing, it is worth marking, the term is elastic, it changes its form according to time, place and person. Here, we must take the realism of discordancy. One must know Kamala Das’s poetry follows the pattern of Nissim Ezekil and Ramanujan. It is most remarkable factor in the soul of Kamala Das’s poetry, in last phase of her poetry we get sublimation of Love i.e. in ‘Ghanshyam’ and ‘Vindravan’. She discovers the evil through her presentation of poetry and desires a harmonic and balanced love in society. There is magic of her art in her poetry- Indianness and Indian culture. I have presented it in the last chapter of the book. There is balance of content and art. Though she is not highly educated, she is expert in the portrait of poetry. This book begins with a seminal ‘Introduction’ following the ‘Background’, ‘Kamala Das: Singer of feminine sensibility’, ‘Autobiographical and Confessional Note in Kamala Das’s poetry’, ‘Protest Against – ‘Well established Social Conventions’. In the last chapter of ‘Evaluation’ her art is marked. Thanks to all whose works I have employed in my book. Afterall, I am grateful to my husband and parents who have provided me essential help of needed occasion. If Critics and Readers like my simple but honest thinking, it would be my ample reward. Thanks to God who guides me time to time in the form of man.
