Book excerpt: The robustness of Full Information Maximum Likelihood Optimal Filtering (FIMLOF) for inertial measurement unit (IMU) calibration in high-g centrifuge environments is considered. FIMLOF uses an approximate Newton's Method to identify Kalman Filter parameters such as process and measurement noise intensities. Normally, IMU process noise intensities and measurement standard deviations are determined by laboratory testing in a 1-g field. In this thesis, they are identified along with the calibration of the IMU during centrifuge testing. The partial derivatives of the Kalman Filter equations necessary to identify these parameters are developed. Using synthetic measurements, the sensitivity of FIMLOF to initial parameter estimates and filter suboptimality is investigated. The filter residuals, the FIMLOF parameters, and their associated statistics are examined. The results show that FIMLOF can be very successful at tuning suboptimal filter models. For systems with significant mismodeling, FIMLOF can substantially improve the IMU calibration and subsequent navigation performance. In addition, FIMLOF can be used to detect mismodeling in a system, through disparities between the laboratory-derived parameter estimates and the FIMLOF parameter estimates.

Kalman published his celebrated paper on recursive min imum variance estimation in dynamical systems [14]. This paper, which introduced an algorithm that has since been known as the discrete Kalman filter, produced a virtual revolution in the field of systems engineering. Today, Kalman filters are used in such diverse areas as navigation, guid ance, oil drilling, water and air quality, and geodetic surveys. In addition, Kalman's work led to a multitude of books and papers on minimum vari ance estimation in dynamical systems, including one by Kalman and Bucy on continuous time systems [15]. Most of this work was done outside of the mathematics and statistics communities and, in the spirit of true academic parochialism, was, with a few notable exceptions, ignored by them. This text is my effort toward closing that chasm. For mathematics students, the Kalman filtering theorem is a beautiful illustration of functional analysis in action; Hilbert spaces being used to solve an extremely important problem in applied mathematics. For statistics students, the Kalman filter is a vivid example of Bayesian statistics in action. The present text grew out of a series of graduate courses given by me in the past decade. Most of these courses were given at the University of Mas sachusetts at Amherst.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis develops an extended Kalman filter for real-time estimation of rigid body motion altitude. The filter represents rotations using quaternions rather than Euler angles, which eliminates the long-standing problem of singularities associated with those angles. A process model for rigid body angular motions and angular rate measurements is defined. The process model converts angular rates into quaternion rates, which are in turn integrated to obtain quaternions. The outputs of the model are values of three-dimensional angular rates, three-dimensional linear accelerations, and three-dimensional magnetic field vector. Gauss-Newton iteration is utilized to find the best quaternion that relates the measured linear accelerations and earth magnetic field in the body coordinate frame to calculated values in the earth coordinate frame. The quaternion obtained from the optimization algorithm is used as part of the observations for the Kalman filter. As a result, the measurement equations become linear. A new approach to attitude estimation is introduced in this thesis. The computational requirements related to the extended Kalman filter developed using this approach are significantly reduced, making it possible to estimate attitude in real-time. Extensive static and dynamic simulation of the filter using Matlab proved it to be robust. Test cases included the presence of large initial errors as well as high noise levels. In all cases the filter was able to converge and accurately track attitude.

Many passive and active driver assistance systems were developed, increasing the passengers' safety and comfort. This ongoing process is a main focus in current research and offers great potential for further systems, especially focusing on the task of autonomous and cooperative driving in the future. For that reason, information about the current stability in terms of dynamic behavior and vehicle environment are necessary for the systems to perform properly. Thus, model-based online state and parameter estimation have become important throughout the last years using a detailed vehicle model and standard sensors, gathering this information. In this chapter, state and parameter estimation in vehicle dynamics utilizing the unscented Kalman filter is presented. The estimation runs in real time based on a detailed vehicle model and standard measurements taken within the car. The results are validated using a Volkswagen Golf GTE Plug-In Hybrid for various dynamic test maneuvers and a Genesys Automotive Dynamic Motion Analyzer (ADMA) measurement unit for high-precision measurements of the vehicle's states. Online parameter estimation is shown for friction coefficient estimation performing maneuvers on different road surfaces.

Book excerpt: Chatter is a particularly severe and damaging form of tool vibration that can occur in milling processes under certain combinations of spindle speed and axial depth of cut. The ability to predict the onset of chatter in a particular tool - workpiece dynamic system could enable the development of a real-time control system that predicts and avoids chatter conditions. Various Extended Kalman Filters (EKFs) are considered here for estimating modal parameters or cutting force coefficients of the tool- workpiece dynamic system from tool deflection measurements in high-speed low-radial-immersion milling. These parameter estimates could be used to predict the dynamic stability of the system. A novel application of an EKF is proposed here to estimate both a radial and a tangential cutting force coefficient. Separate sets of force coefficients for each cutting tooth may also be estimated, and the system is found to be observable. The EKF is tested on simulated measurements and found to perform accurately and repeatably. The EKF is also tested on experimental measurements, and the resulting parameter estimates result in simulations that correlate well with experimental tool deflection trajectories. Model modifications are also proposed that could improve accuracy, including the addition of centrifugal and Coriolis inertial forces and a means of accounting for tool eccentricity.

Book excerpt: The use of body-worn inertial measurement units (IMUs) as an alternative to traditional human optical motion capture (OMC) techniques has gained increasing attention over the last twenty years. In contrast to traditional OMC, IMUs are less intrusive and allow measurements to be taken in the environment of interest--not just a contrived laboratory space. The primary goal of this work is to advance human-IMU kinematic modeling and estimation techniques through increasing the accuracy of IMU-derived human skeletal joint angles while minimizing the required calibration necessary to use an IMU-based human mocap system. A secondary goal of this work is to demonstrate practical application of an IMU-based mocap system to a specific domain of interest: space suit design and operations. In this domain, IMUs offer a tractable approach to understanding suited or unsuited human kinematics in the field. The capture of these kinematics in relevant environments allow engineers to better design and maintain space suits as well as model the operational paradigms which enable the future of human extraplanetary spaceflight.
