Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How international is international humanitarian law? The Laws of Yesterday's Wars 3: From Highland New Guinea to the Island of Malta, together with its companion volumes, The Laws of Yesterday’s Wars: From Indigenous Australians to the American Civil War (Brill-Nijhoff, 2021) and The Laws of Yesterday's Wars 2: From Ancient India to East Africa (Brill-Nijhoff, 2022), attempts to answer that question. It offers a culture-by-culture account of various unique restrictions placed on warfare over time. Containing essays by a range of laws of war academics and practitioners, it approaches the laws of yesterday’s wars from a wide cross-section of history and culture, seeking to find any common ground and to demonstrate a history of international law outside the usual confines of its ‘development’ by Europeans and its later ‘contributions.’ This volume includes studies on Mongol, Iban and Ottoman rules of war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many exercise programs out there to choose from; however, choosing martial arts as that exercise venue is a big decision. As in all sports, dedication and discipline are required in your chosen sport to become good. In choosing the martial arts as your pursuit, that dedication and discipline is at a very high standard. It becomes a lifetime devotion which is geared towards a code of honor, a creed to follow, and responsibility to carry your skills to a higher human level. This book is not just about martial arts or about you making a survival choice regarding a self-defense endeavor; it is also about life and longevity as well as how to stay and maintain that state of physical well-being. This maintenance or balance formulates the essence of “Taijiquan” the philosophical concept for both its defense training and its health benefits. I hope in reading this book it will help you to choose wisely. What would happen if the masters of different martial art’s academies join forces to devise one master form of martial arts? This should include all the martial arts systems, styles, philosophies, and functionalities and to embrace the hidden secrets of their individual styles and formulate one master super self-defense universal system that is all incorporating and encompassing. A structure in which entails the very essence of human survival. This new system of martial arts would maintain the subsistence for the sacredness and protection of our evolutionary way. This “way” is the continuation of the human-species. Longevity depends on maintaining your survival skills and survival skills depend on maintaining your health. It is all tied together and there is no separation of these factors. This book is about that; to maintain and live a healthy and long life through the use of the martial arts format. I called the union above “The Yoda System.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book highlights studies that show how smart cities promote urban economic development. The book surveys the state of the art of Smart City Economic Development through a literature survey. The book uses 13 in depth city research case studies in 10 countries such as the North America, Europe, Africa and Asia to explain how a smart economy changes the urban spatial system and vice versa. This book focuses on exploratory city studies in different countries, which investigate how urban spatial systems adapt to the specific needs of smart urban economy. The theory of smart city economic development is not yet entirely understood and applied in metropolitan regional plans. Smart urban economies are largely the result of the influence of ICT applications on all aspects of urban economy, which in turn changes the land-use system. It points out that the dynamics of smart city GDP creation takes ‘different paths,’ which need further empirical study, hypothesis testing and mathematical modelling. Although there are hypotheses on how smart cities generate wealth and social benefits for nations, there are no significant empirical studies available on how they generate urban economic development through urban spatial adaptation. This book with 13 cities research studies is one attempt to fill in the gap in knowledge base.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history and evolution of Ayurveda and other indigenous medical traditions in juxtaposition with their encounter with colonial modernity. Through the lens of hereditary folk and Ayurvedic practitioners, it focuses on Kerala’s heterogeneous medical traditions and presents them against the backdrop of the geographical, historical, sociocultural, ethnographic and regional contexts in which they developed and transformed. The author explores the world of Kerala’s last traditionally trained hereditary practitioners (folk healers, poison therapists, Sanskrit-speaking Muslim Ayurvedic practitioners and the legendary Brahman Ashtavaidyan physicians). He discusses the views of these physicians regarding the marked difference between their personalised ancestral methods of treatment and the standardised version of Ayurveda compliant with biomedicine that is practised by doctors today. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, this book will be useful to researchers and scholars of medical anthropology, health and social medicine, sociology and social anthropology, the history of science and modern Indian history, as well as to medical practitioners interested in alternative and traditional medicine.

Book excerpt: The first book in English on the Indian martial art that was the precursor to the Chinese and Japanese traditions • A rigorous martial arts practice that also promotes harmonious self-development • Provides practices for controlling the circulation of energy and vital forces throughout the body Originating in the southern Indian province of Kerala, kalaripayat is the most ancient of the Eastern martial arts. Yet today it has been practically forgotten. Former CBS war correspondent Patrick Denaud looks at this neglected tradition, whose history spans millennia, from the time it was transmitted by the god Vishnu to the sage Parasurama and his twenty-one disciples, the original Gurukkals, to its present-day practice. More than an art of combat, kalaripayat is a way of life and a spiritual discipline. Its martial techniques are designed to create states propitious for deep meditation. Long the jealously guarded art of the Nair warriors of southern India, kalaripayat was banned by the British East India Company in 1793 and was long believed by outside observers to be extinct. Several Gurukkals continued a clandestine practice and secretly trained the students who would transmit the teachings to today’s keepers of the art, such as Gurukkal Pratap S. Balachandrian. Like other spiritual disciplines, kalaripayat draws from the science of breath. Focused, silent breathing creates highly concentrated trance states and helps control the inner circulation of vital energy. The practitioner learns not only how to be a capable fighter with or without weapons but also an accomplished healer. The emphasis of this practice on circulating energy throughout the body is not only of interest to martial arts practitioners but also to all those interested in the harmonious development of the self.

Book excerpt: In a borderless world, all would be travelers indeed. India is a small borderless world in itself, and Kerala lies at the southernmost tip. I live almost near the lovely Kashmir, but does that make Kerala any less lovely! This book is indeed author's baby born out of his love of nature. "Writing books is the closest men ever came to having children." --Norman Mailer Kerala is beautiful not only because of "God" but also because of the people who have made Kerala their home. The author went there as a parasite in the disguise of a tourist and sucked all he could in a short span of 23 days. But did anybody ever complain? No, never. The Keralans believe the joy multiplies by sharing, and hereby the author emulate them. The book is divided into four chapters concentrated on four famous locations in Kerala: Munnar, Kochi, Alleppey and Varkala. The author's experience in Munnar has been presented as a love story, albeit with nature. Kochi is where the author enlivened and discovered himself as a younger person, and the experience is shared in a canvas of activities involving art, history, luxury, people and sports. Alleppey is known for its backwater cruises; however, the author experienced it as an intriguing world so very different and exciting, climaxing into a thrilling snake boat race experience. Varkala is a place to relax, so did the author, but a bit differently; and the difference is author's unique experience shared with the readers.
