Book excerpt: Los Angeles Times bestseller: A memoir by the M*A*S*H actor revealing his hardscrabble childhood, his life in Hollywood, and his passion for human rights. Best known for his eight years on M*A*S*H and his five seasons on Providence, Mike Farrell is also a writer, director, and producer—and a fiercely dedicated activist who has served on human rights and peace delegations to countries around the world as well as working tirelessly on the issue of the death penalty. In Just Call Me Mike, he not only tells his story but reveals the candidness and decency that has endeared him not only to his fans but to commentators across the political divide. “In this honest autobiography, Farrell, who played B.J. Hunnicutt in the TV series M*A*S*H, provides intimate accounts of growing up working-class in the shadows of wealthy Hollywood, overcoming personal demons as he starts his acting career and finding happiness in the popular sitcom and what he describes as a supportive and cohesive cast and crew. Throughout the series, Farrell also began to pursue an interest in politics and human rights that took him to Cambodia, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador, and his passionate descriptions of the human rights abuses in those countries show why Farrell currently is considered one of Hollywood’s most prominent activists.” —Publishers Weekly “A stand-up guy . . . His book, Just Call Me Mike, will entertain and inform you far beyond most autobiographies. Farrell’s life is fascinating and his journey is well worth your time.” —Bill O’Reilly “He describes the fantastic, sometimes painful, and ultimately redeeming journey that his conscience has led him on . . . Disarmingly honest.” —Kamala Harris “Farrell doesn’t hesitate to put himself on the line, whether writing about his troubled past, the behind-the-scenes conflicts on the M*A*S*H set, or his human rights activism.” —The Sacramento Bee

Book excerpt: Migrants and minorities are always at risk of being caught in essentialized cultural definitions and being denied the right to express their cultural preferences because they are perceived as threats to social cohesion. Migrants and minorities respond to these difficulties in multiple ways — as active agents in the pedagogical, political, social, and scientific processes that position them in this or that cultural sphere. On the one hand, they reject ascribed cultural attributes while striving towards integration in a variety of social spheres, e.g. school and workplace, in order to achieve social mobility. On the other hand, they articulate demands for cultural self-determination. This discursive duality is met with suspicion by the majority culture. For societies with high levels of migration or with substantial minority cultures, questions related to the meaning of cultural heterogeneity and the social and cultural limits of learning and communication (e.g. migration education or critical multiculturalism) are very important. It is precisely here where the chances for new beginnings and new trials become of great importance for educational theorizing, which urgently needs to find answers to current questions about individual freedom, community/cultural affiliations, and social and democratic cohesion. Answers to these questions must account for both ‘political’ and ‘learning’ perspectives at the macro, mezzo, and micro contextual levels. The contributions of this edited volume enhance the knowledge in the field of migrant/minority education, with a special emphasis on the meaning of culture and social learning for educational processes.

Stanley, while nearing adulthood, behaves well beyond his years, operating as a soldier inside a local drug cartel. Strategically, he navigates his way through adolescence, fighting to win battles in the high-stakes vintage war of good against evil. But which side is he on? Set in the poverty stricken inner-city of Southside Goings (Donald County), Little Sigger showcases his deep desires for money and women, his fascination with love, and his never-ending chess game with the streets. Will he stay honorable and loyal to his gang, aligning with the visions his leaders have for him? Or will his ambition for control and independence of self lead him down a path headed straight for the grave?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arts in Earnest explores the unique folklife of North Carolina from ruddy ducks to pranks in the mill. Traversing from Murphy to Manteo, these fifteen essays demonstrate the importance of North Carolina’s continually changing folklife. From decoy carving along the coast, to the music of tobacco chants and the blues of the Piedmont, to the Jack tales of the mountains, Arts in Earnest reflects the story of a people negotiating their rapidly changing social and economic environment. Personal interviews are an important element in the book. Laura Lee, an elderly black woman from Chatham County, describes the quilts she made from funeral flower ribbons; witnesses and friends each remember varying details of the Duke University football player who single-handedly vanquished a gang of would-be muggers; Clyde Jones leads a safari through his backyard, which is filled with animals made of wood and cement that represent nontraditional folk art; the songs and sermon of a Primitive Baptist service flow together as one—“it tills you up all over”; Durham bluesman Willie Trice, one of a handful of Durham musicians who recorded in the 1930s and early 1940s, remembers when the active tobacco warehouses offered ready audiences—“They’d tip us a heap of change to play some music”; and Goldsboro tobacco auctioneer H. L. “Speed” Riggs chants 460 words per minute, five to six times faster than a normal conversational rate.
