Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Sister Kubicki uses Jacques Berthier's Taize music to explore the nature of liturgical music as ritual symbol. She carries out a hermeneutical analysis of Berthier's chants and examines biographical and historical data related to the creator's of Taize music and the founding of the Taize community. The author draws on five areas of study to interpret the Taize chants as ritual symbol - symbol theory, semiotics, theologies of symbol, ritual theory, and perfomative language theory. The final chapter explores potential ecclesial meanings which may be mediated in the Taize liturgy and the role of Berthier's chants in mediating that meaning. The study concludes that it is music's symbolic property that enables it to be both ministerial and integral to the liturgy. As symbolic activity, music-making evokes participation, negotiates relationships, and enables the assembly to orient themselves and to find their identity and place within their world. Furthermore, music-making provides the illocutionary force to "do something" in the act of singing. Thus it is that as part of a complexus of ritual symbols, music interacts with other symbols, in mediating the liturgy's meaning.

Dan Forrest's Jubilate Deo brings to life the global aspect of the traditional Psalm 100 text, "O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands," by setting it in seven different languages and drawing from a wide spectrum of musical influences. Each movement combines some characteristics of its language-group's musical culture with the composer's own musical language. Movements include liturgical Latin, intertwined Hebrew and Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Zulu, Spanish, Song of the Earth (untexted), and a closing movement combining several of these languages with English. The result is a stunning global celebration of joy, as all the earth sings as one, "omnis terra, jubilate!" Scored for mixed choir with soprano and alto soli and optional treble choir, with three instrumentations available. Performance time 45-50 minutes. Commissioned and premiered by Henry Leck and the Indianapolis Children's Choirs, April 2016 Instrumentation options: * HMB269A: Full orchestra: (LARGE VERSION) Regular full orchestra (Winds 2.2.2.2, Brass 2/4.2.2.2, Harp, Percussion 1-2, Strings 4.4.3.3.2), plus optional instruments and/or digital keyboard. * HMB269B: Chamber ensemble: (SMALL VERSION) Organ, plus (solo instruments) flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, harp, percussion (two players recommended), violin, cello, plus optional instruments and/or digital keyboard. * HMB269C: Small orchestra: (MEDIUM VERSION) Combines the organ and solo winds from chamber ensemble version, with the string orchestra parts from the full orchestration, and the harp, percussion, and optional instruments and/or keyboard. *Harp, percussion, and all optional instruments are identical in all three versions. **Solo flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and organ parts are identical in Chamber Ensemble (SMALL) and Small Orch (MEDIUM) versions. ***String orchestra parts (Vln1, Vln2, Vla, Cello, DB) are identical in Full Orch (LARGE) and Small Orch (MEDIUM) versions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of Laster's Catalog combines in one volume the listings from the first catalog with the voluminous material that has appeared since 1973, more than doubling the number of citations. It is designed as an aid for the church musician and/or pastor seeking to plan unified worship services. It will also be of use to those church musicians who follow the Liturgical Calendar and plan music appropriate to the appointed lessons, as well as a source for non-church choir directors who would like to locate choral settings based on a particular passage from Scripture. Entries are arranged from Genesis through Revelation. Each main entry citation provides the biblical reference (book, chapter, and verse), as well as a reference to additional passages from Scripture used in the anthem. The composer, arranger, or editor and the title are listed as they appear on the octavo. Information on voicing, solos, and instrumental accompaniment is noted; the name of the publisher, the most recent date of publication and the octavo number appear at the end of each citation, where information on instrumental parts, other versions of the same title, and collections where the work might appear are also listed. Composer and title indexes round off the work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The academic disciplines of Biblical Studies and Systematic Theology were long closely linked to one another. However, in the modern period they became gradually separated which led to increasing subject specialization, but also to a lamentable lacuna within the various branches of Divinity. As the lack of dialogue between Biblical Studies and the various theological disciplines increased, a minority-group of scholars in the past few decades reacted and sought to re-establish the time-honoured bonds between the disciplines. The present volume is part of this intellectual response, with contributions from scholars of various professional and denominational backgrounds. Together, the book's 25 chapters seek to reinvigorate the crucial cross-disciplinary dialogue, involving biblical, narrative, historical, systematic-theological and philosophic-theological perspectives. The book opens the horizon to contemporary research, and fills a lamentable research gap with a number of fresh contributions from scholars in the respective sub-disciplines

The first three sections-- on the Florentine Renaissance, archival studies, and madrigal and carnival song--deal with subjects central to his research. Subsequent contributions deal with various aspects of Italian opera, performance practice, manuscript studies, and music and image. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: This is a completely re-typeset version of Pope Paul VI's "Jubilate Deo." It is a collection of the simpler Gregorian chant melodies for the faithful to sing together. In this way Gregorian chant may again become a bond that forms the members of many nations into a single people, gathered together in Christ's name with one heart, one mind, and one voice. This living unity, symbolized by the union of voices that speak in different languages, accents, and inflections is a striking manifestation of the diversified harmony of the one Church.
