Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his final work, a visionary game designer reveals how a surprising range of play-based experiences can unlock our imagination and help us capture the power of fun and delight. Bernard De Koven (1941–2018) was a pioneering designer of games and theorist of fun. He studied games long before the field of game studies existed. For De Koven, games could not be reduced to artifacts and rules; they were about a sense of transcendent fun. This book, his last, is about the imagination: the imagination as a playground, a possibility space, and a gateway to wonder. The Infinite Playground extends a play-centered invitation to experience the power and delight unlocked by imagination. It offers a curriculum for playful learning. De Koven guides the readers through a series of observations and techniques, interspersed with games. He begins with the fundamentals of play, and proceeds through the private imagination, the shared imagination, and imagining the world—observing, “the things we imagine can become the world.” Along the way, he reminisces about playing ping-pong with basketball great Bill Russell; begins the instructions for a game called Reception Line with “Mill around”; and introduces blathering games—Blather, Group Blather, Singing Blather, and The Blather Chorale—that allow the player's consciousness to meander freely. Delivered during the last months of his life, The Infinite Playground has been painstakingly cowritten with Holly Gramazio, who worked together with coeditors Celia Pearce and Eric Zimmerman to complete the project as Bernie De Koven's illness made it impossible for him to continue writing. Other prominent game scholars and designers influenced by De Koven, including Katie Salen Tekinbaş, Jesper Juul, Frank Lantz, and members of Bernie's own family, contribute short interstitial essays.

Grounded in a deep respect for children, the teaching of independence, and caring for others, the small Santa Monica preschool has remained consistent for 40 years. In Ina’s words “I hope that when a child walks out of the gate they will climb any mountain they wish to climb, educational or otherwise. I hope they have learned to question the world, ask ‘Can you explain that to me?’ or say, ‘I do not understand’ or ‘I do not agree’. More importantly, I hope they choose for their life’s work something that will make this a better world and that they find someone to share their life, because no matter how successful your are, life without someone to love is incomplete.

Book excerpt: THE JOY LADDER: AN IRREVERENT GUIDE TO LIVING A JOYOUS LIFE slices through the FLAPDOODLE surrounding human potential and spirituality. It's simple, practical, shockingly common sensical, and most important, FUN! It declares that we are all meant to live lives of OUTRAGEOUS JOY; and many don't because they have been conditioned to believe that, while this may be possible for some few lucky souls, it is not attainable for them. It shows how we have been LED DOWN THE GARDEN PATH about how life works and why things happen to us. We attract situations and experiences, they don't just happen to us! Whatever you have been experiencing - YOU HAVE BEEN ATTRACTING! And that's great news because changing your life is totally in your hands! THE JOY LADDER is a breath of fresh air for those who do not resonate with the current messages on human potential because they intuitively know that, while there may be some whiffs of inspiration, the pervading odor is one of a busy cow pasture in the middle of summer! It is not another love, light and peace, airy-fairy new-age, babble speak book. It's a practical guide to living a dynamic, vital, enthusiastic and joyful life. And you won't need to join a religion or meditation group, stand on your head, pray to strange gods, or eat Tofu (unless you like Tofu). Please see the Joy Ladder website.

Buki Papillon, author of An Ordinary Wonder It's hard to plan your future when the ghosts of the past won't leave you alone... Stella tries very hard to be good. She tries not to be sassy, to answer back, to be noticed. Because when Stella’s father is angry, it’s like lightning and thunder and hailstones. Years later, Stella has left her troubled childhood behind and appears to have it all: a degree, a demanding job as a barrister and a group of friends who always have her back. But underneath the surface, she is haunted by her past. It will take all her grace, courage and love to heal her wounds and break free. Set against a backdrop of London and Ghana, Marie-Claire Amuah's remarkable debut is an unforgettable exploration of intergenerational trauma. Brimming with compassion, One for Sorrow, Two for Joy offers both a sensitive portrayal of the ripple effects of domestic violence, and a defiant story of friendship, resilience and hope.

Book excerpt: This collection offers a theologically rich and musically flexible resource for those who lead young children in music experiences in the church or at home. The songs include feminine and masculine references to God to teach the foundational biblical truth that male and female of all races are created equally in the divine image (Genesis 1:27). The music, teaching ideas, and activities can enhance the work of preschool church music groups and children's choirs, and can be used in Church School classes, Vacation Bible Schools, daycare programs, music camps, and worship experiences for young children. This songbook comes with the hope that children will learn an inclusive theology of God and an ethic of equality and fairness in human relationships.
