From foreign missionary to convicted felon, Joel Price's clandestine world collided with reality to create a cyclone of uncertainty for his wife, Tabitha, and three young sons, ending their idyllic life forever. As Joel sought in secret to overcome his obsession and addiction on his own, he slipped over the precipice of self-destruction leading to a federal investigation and ultimately to incarceration. In a bold and risky move, Tabitha Price lays bare her shattered world, addressing issues long veiled in silence by Christian society. With ragged vulnerability she testifies to God's hand at work in the midst of tragedy, from lessons on forgiveness, to the beauty of God's all-sufficiency. When all hope seems lost and your world spins out of control, the Prices' story is a powerful reminder that God gives joy in the mourning. '...page after page the reader discovers hope, redemption, forgiveness, healing, and joy.' -Carol Kent, Speaker and Author '...an agonizing and compelling account-of the sin and shame that could be ours, of the love and loyalty that comes with faith, and of the depth and spiritual maturity that only comes with brokenness.' -Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor, Northland - A Church Distributed

Book excerpt: In a move that shocks nineteenth-century Philadelphia society, wealthy widow Laina Brighton turns her grand house into an orphanage for homeless children. Staid and stuffy teas quickly give way to peals of happy laughter echoing through the stately halls. With the support of handsome doctor Thaddeous Allen, Laina is determined to give these waifs a better life, despite the malicious gossip that surrounds them. As these two crusaders, bound by honor and courage, create a future for the forgotten, they change the course of their own futures in ways they never imagined. Along the way, they make a felicitous discovery: that sometimes people become a family in their hearts.

Book excerpt: Joy Comes in the Mourning presents an authentic and practical devotion-style book intended to speak to a topic that, unfortunately, everyone must encounter in their lives—grieving loss. This collection is unusual in that it is autobiographical. Author Helene Marie Cruz shares both her experiences of loss and those of many in her family and close circle of friends, all of whom have lost loved ones. The testimonies vary in terms of the types of losses and the situations before and after the mourning, but the common theme is that God, the Father; Jesus, the Son; and the Holy Spirit, the Counselor, were present somewhere during these journeys of grief. Cruz encourages but also evangelizes, eliciting the Holy Spirit to pull you toward either knowing the Savior for the first time or calling upon Him for healing, grace, peace, and the joy that the Psalmist David speaks of in the healing psalm of promise, Psalm 30:5—“weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Uplifting and encouraging, this collection of testimonies invites you to understand and ultimately live the promise offered by God of the joy that follows grief.

Book excerpt: In this second volume, Dr. Cook provides a series of articles that are part of his morning meditations on Scripture. Meditation, in the biblical sense, is an intentional filling of the mind with divine viewpoint; specifically, God’s Word. The purpose is to saturate our thinking with Scripture so that it will permeate all aspects of our reasoning and guide us into God’s will. These articles touch on subjects such as soteriology, grace, worship, righteous living, and character studies of people such as Saul and David. The overall intent of the book is to inform and inspire believers to live righteously before God.

Book excerpt: “A gift of love to others who are seeking solace.” —Olivia Newton-John On the morning of May 11, 2015, Erin Davis, one of Canada’s most beloved radio personalities, suffered a devastating blow Erin was on set in Jamaica when she received the news that her twenty-four-year-old daughter, Lauren—who had marked a joyous Mother’s Day just hours before—had failed to awaken to her baby’s cries. Thus began Erin’s journey of grieving out loud with her family, friends and listeners, and of demonstrating how to pick up and keep going after experiencing the worst loss a parent can endure. Struck with grief and unable to find the answer to why Lauren had died, Erin and her husband, Rob, started down the long road through loss, determined not only to survive but also to reclaim the joy in their lives. Inspiring and unflinching, Mourning Has Broken charts a way forward after life has dealt a crushing blow. It reminds us that we are not alone in grief, and that although life is unpredictable and unfair, we can survive and return to joy.

This book calls for us to rise above our prejudices, biases, selfishness, and division so that we can help heal the world with an abundance of God’s grace, mercy, and love.

Book excerpt: Joy in the Morning alludes to Psalm 30:5: Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. These poems ultimately point to the inherent rewards of continuation and survival, as the Scripture suggests, while they also pun on the words morning/mourning to reveal ways in which joy can be found even amid suffering. The sure joy Claude Wilkinson offers readers is this: nature's delicate details and memory's refining power. Tender, astonishing depictions - of an iridescent beetle, a jazz funeral, rural poverty transformed by a mother's love - carry the theme in lyrical form. Joy in the Morning are poems of strong emotion and exquisite artistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropologists have long known that different cultures give expression to their symbol systems through external mediums such as food and clothing, but they have not recognized as readily that cultures also mold emotional life to fit particular patterns of meaning. This prejudice against the role of behaviors in shaping the emotional and cognitive life is especially strong in the study of religion. Gary Anderson's study reveals that, in the Israelite culture (and later, the Jewish culture), mourning and joy as emotional experiences have visible behavioral components for both the individual and the community at large. The best evidence of this can be found in rabbinical texts that prescribe behaviors appropriate to joy and determine when this ritual state supersedes that of mourning. For example, on religious feast days, mourning is forbidden and joy is prescribed. Mourning cannot resume until after the festival. The terms "mourning" and "joy" so employed do not refer to simple emotional states, but rather constitute a discrete set of ritual behaviors. In fact, the types of discrete behaviors that constitute joy (eating, drinking, festal song, anointing with oil, festive attire, sexual relations) all have exact anti-types in the ritual of mourning (fasting, dirges, putting ashes on the head, rending one's garments or putting on sackcloth, sexual continence). Anderson shows that it is not only the rabbinical texts that use the terms "mourning" and "joy" in this way; rabbinic tradition is simply heir to a much older tradition, as witnessed in biblical and other ancient Near Eastern narratives such as the Gilgamesh Epic.
