Book excerpt: The Battle of Beersheba, a redeeming win for the ANZACs who lost at Gallipoli, has slipped through the cracks of Australia's historical consciousness. Why are Australians so much more content to commemmorate a glorious defeat than we are to celebrate such a resounding, against the odds, victory?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of Promise: Notes of a Spring-Journey From Beersheba to Sidon I now finish the notes of my eastern 'journey. They are the same in kind as those of the former volume. I have been short in describing well-known places, and longer in my notes of those not so often visited. Hence the sea-plain, from Sidon southward, has been briefly noticed while Beersheba, the Interior of the great Mosque at Jerusalem, the Quarries underneath the city, and the Mounds of ashes outside, have been taken up more at length. Some topographical discussions, which would have broken up the narrative, have been cast into an Appendix. The list of Books and the Index I meant to have made fuller, but have been staid by the unlooked-for growth and size of the volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hebrew/Christian Scriptures include many allusions to pilgrimage customs and practices, yet the information is scattered and requires a considerable amount of reconstruction. It is posited that the pilgrimage paradigm, including the journey motif, has influenced the thought patterns of the writers of both the Old and New Testaments. To follow Jesus' journey to Jerusalem on the three feasts of pilgrimage in Luke-Acts and John, and their relevance to the way he revealed himself and taught his disciples, this work begins with the creation and patriarchal narratives, examining how the pilgrimage paradigm relates to discipleship. Reviewing the history of the people of God including the Exodus, the Exile, and restoration, this book establishes the significance of pilgrimage as a paradigm for Israel that eventually shapes Judaism. Seung Y Lee points us to a neglected fact that the three feasts of pilgrimage have developed their own characters and meanings for the momentous events in the history of Israel, and both Luke-Acts and John reflect the significance of the pilgrimage paradigm for Jesus' self-understanding and his teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central premise of this book is that biblical Hebrew narrative, in terms of its structure, tends to operate under similar mechanical constraints to those of a stage-play; wherein 'space' is central, characters are fluid, and 'objects' within the narrative tend to take on a deep internal significance. The smaller episodic narrative units within the Hebrew aesthetic tend to grant primacy to space, both ideologically and at the mechanical level of the text itself. However 'space', as a determinate structural category, has been all but overlooked in the field of biblical studies to date; reflecting perhaps our own inability, as modern readers, to see beyond the dominant 'cinematic' aesthetic of our times. The book is divided into two major sections, each beginning with a more theoretical approach to the function of narrative space, and ending with a practical application of the previous discussion; using "Genesis 28.10-22" (the Bethel narrative) and the book of "Ruth" respectively, as test cases.
