Book Synopsis Continuous Semigroups in Banach Algebras by : Allan M. Sinclair
Download or read book Continuous Semigroups in Banach Algebras written by Allan M. Sinclair and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1982-06-17 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these notes the abstract theory of analytic one-parameter semigroups in Banach algebras is discussed, with the Gaussian, Poisson and fractional integral semigroups in convolution Banach algebras serving as motivating examples. Such semigroups are constructed in a Banach algebra with a bounded approximate identity. Growth restrictions on the semigroup are linked to the structure of the underlying Banach algebra. The Hille-Yosida Theorem and a result of J. Esterle's on the nilpotency of semigroups are proved in detail. The lecture notes are an expanded version of lectures given by the author at the University of Edinburgh in 1980 and can be used as a text for a graduate course in functional analysis.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Independence for Analysts by : H. G. Dales
Download or read book An Introduction to Independence for Analysts written by H. G. Dales and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-12-10 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forcing is a powerful tool from logic which is used to prove that certain propositions of mathematics are independent of the basic axioms of set theory, ZFC. This book explains clearly, to non-logicians, the technique of forcing and its connection with independence, and gives a full proof that a naturally arising and deep question of analysis is independent of ZFC. It provides an accessible account of this result, and it includes a discussion, of Martin's Axiom and of the independence of CH.

Book Synopsis Non-Classical Continuum Mechanics by : R. J. Knops
Download or read book Non-Classical Continuum Mechanics written by R. J. Knops and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-24 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of the invited papers presented at a LMS Durham Symposium on modern developments in non-classical continuum mechanics. A major aim was to bring together workers in both the abstract and practical aspects of the subject in order to achieve enhanced appreciation of each others' approach and hence of the mathematical techniques and physical intuition essential for successful research in this field. As a result, the present collection consists of a series of concise articles which are introductions to, and succinct accounts of, current activity in many branches of non-classical continuum mechanics. Research workers in applied mathematics, physics, theoretical mechanics, and structural and aeronautical engineering will find much of interest in this collection.
Book Synopsis Classification Problems in Ergodic Theory by : William Parry
Download or read book Classification Problems in Ergodic Theory written by William Parry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1982-07-08 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The isomorphism problem of ergodic theory has been extensively studied since Kolmogorov's introduction of entropy into the subject and especially since Ornstein's solution for Bernoulli processes. Much of this research has been in the abstract measure-theoretic setting of pure ergodic theory. However, there has been growing interest in isomorphisms of a more restrictive and perhaps more realistic nature which recognize and respect the state structure of processes in various ways. These notes give an account of some recent developments in this direction. A special feature is the frequent use of the information function as an invariant in a variety of special isomorphism problems. Lecturers and postgraduates in mathematics and research workers in communication engineering will find this book of use and interest.
