In others, and in most fresh pollen, when placed in ordinarily aer ated water, at least when this is slightly thickened by syrup or the like, and submitted to a congenial temperature, a projection of the inner coat through the outer appears at some one point, and by a kind of germination grows into a slender tube, which may even attain two or three hundred times the diameter of the grain and the richer protoplasmic contents tend to accumulate at the farther and somewhat enlarging extremity of this pollen tube. Commonly the pollen remains unaltered until it is placed upon the stigma. The more or less viscid moisture of this incites a similar growth, and also doubt less nourishes it; and the protruding tube at once penetrates the stigma, and by gliding between its loose cells buries itself in the tissue of the style, descending thence to the interior of the ovary and at length to the ovules. Fertilization is accomplished by the action of this pollen-tube'upon the ovule, and upon a special formation within it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the New-York Microscopical Society, Vol. 5 For convenience in naming, we have been accustomed to con sider all material things as disposed upon distinctly separated planes, placed one above another, like steps, thus marked Off into kingdoms (i) Of the Elements, (2) of Chemical Compounds, including Minerals, (3) of Plants, and (4) of Animals. In the vegetable and animal kingdoms we have followed Linnaeus, in regarding the inhabitants as gathered together in strictly bound ed groups Of various degrees of importance, from sub-king doms down to species. And although this has been known as the natural system, it is now very plain that it is entirely ar tificial. The fact is that there are no clearly marked classes in animate nature, but that what we choose to call kingdoms, families, orders, genera, and species, shade off imperceptibly into one another, in continuous succession, from the protoplasm speck upwards; so that, instead of planes widely divided by steps, and groups upon these planes rigidly fenced off from one another, a gently sloping hill-side closely covered with every possible form, - the simplest at the bottom, the most complex, or most highly differentiated, at the top, - a perfect spectrum Of the whole living creation, displayed in gradually blending chromatic bands from the base to the apex, and spreading laterally in infi nite variety of bombinations and interweavings, would probably more nearly represent the system Of Development as seen in the light of the latest science. According to the present theory of evolution, some such figure as I have just used would roughly depict not only the relations of all material things as now exist ing, but also the relations Of things as they have existed at any one point of time in the past, or as they may possibly exist at any period in the future. Moreover, it would in a general way picture the relations of the whole succession of substances and organisms from the beginning of time to the end. According to this hypothesis, if we but knew just how to follow the clews, we could trace a more or less irregular line from any one form to any other we might select; since it assumes a consistent and continuous genealogical warp, underlying what at first sight ap pears to be a wholly incongruous pattern. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the New-York Microscopical Society, 1892, Vol. 8 In the diatoms, the first indication we have that self-division is about to take place is the appearance of a sort of uneasiness within the nucleus and the formation of a constriction about the middle of the endochrome. This is at the beginning a mere in dentation of the outline, but it gradually deepens and deepens un til it finally results in the cleaving of the endochrome in twain. It is one of the most impressive sights a man can witness, - this kneading and moulding of the primal matter of a living organism by an invisible agency, under whose mysterious excitement it trembles and surges and at last rends itself apart. One can hardly hope to come nearer than this to the actual first cause of the organic world. Having once seen this manifestation of efficient energy within the diatom-shell, we Shall not much wonder that the free frustules move from place to place. We may, however, entertain a lively curiosity as to the direct means by which their locomotion is ac complished, although, in the present state of knowledge, I am sorry to say, that curiosity cannot be satisfied. The Journal was founded in the year 1853 by the publisher, Mr. S. Highley, and was edited by Dr. Edwin Lankester and Mr. George Busk. In 1856 the publisher's business was transferred to Mr. John Churchill, with which firm it has remained ever since. Up to 1868 the Journal published the Transactions of the Royal Microscopical Society of London, ' but in 1869 the Society started its own publication, and a new editorial arrangement of the Journal was made. Mr. George Busk retired, and Mr. Ray Lankester, who had lately taken his degree at Oxford, joined his father in the editorship.
