Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Civil War, black people in the New Orleans region did not have adequate medical care, causing a health care crisis which lasted for almost two decades. In 1889 an institution emerged in response to this emergency. New Orleans University, a Methodist Episcopal Church school, opened a medical department which would later become Flint Medical College. Flint was born of the missionary fervor of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Although constantly facing the obstacle of chronic financial difficulty, the medical school grew, and in 1901, to honor its benefactor businessman John D. Flint, the university changed the name of the school to Flint Medical College. In spite of positive development, by 1905 advances in medical knowledge and practices threatened the adequacy of Flint's program. By 1906, Flint was struggling academically and needed better clinical facilities. Finally, faced with challenges it was unable to meet, in August 1911, the university announced the closing of Flint Medical College. Divers elements combined to end Flint's existence in 1911, but it was not a failure. This institution provided the foundation for organized health care for black people in the New Orleans area, and signified a triumph of black self-determination underwritten by Christian missionary fervor.

Book excerpt: With a well-earned reputation for tolerance of both prostitution and miscegenation, New Orleans became known as the Great Southern Babylon in antebellum times. Following the Civil War, a profound alteration in social and economic conditions gradually reshaped the city's sexual culture and erotic commerce. Historian Alecia P. Long traces sex in the Crescent City over fifty years, drawing from Louisiana Supreme Court case testimony to relate intriguing tales of people both obscure and famous whose relationships and actions exemplify the era. Long uncovers a connection between the geographical segregation of prostitution and the rising tide of racial segregation. She offers a compelling explanation of how New Orleans's lucrative sex trade drew tourists from the Bible Belt and beyond even as a nationwide trend toward the commercialization of sex emerged. And she dispels the romanticized smoke and perfume surrounding Storyville to reveal in the reasons for its rise and fall a fascinating corner of southern history. The Great Southern Babylon portrays the complex mosaic of race, gender, sexuality, social class, and commerce in turn-of-the-twentieth-century New Orleans. "Long brilliantly charts the historical roots and evolution of the culture of commercial sexuality in New Orleans.... The result is a landmark book all should read." -- Darlene Clark Hine, coauthor of A Shining Thread of Hope: The History of Black Women in America

Book excerpt: Peter Clarks ministerial journey provides an in-depth understanding of the sacrifices and hardships faced by black Methodist preachers as they spread the gospel and expanded Methodism in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. It provides deep insight into the racial attitudes and economic conditions that prevailed in post-Reconstruction Louisiana. - Angella Current-Felder, author, Breaking Barriers: An African American Family & the Methodist Story I could feel the story better than most because I had been down some of the same roads Peter Clark traveled, although a hundred years later and under more comfortable circumstances. - Rev. James L. Killen, Jr., author, Pastoral Care in the Small Membership Church We sensed Peter Clarks strength and leadership throughout this very turbulent and racially charged time in our history. He would have been honored to have his life written about with such loving care. - Rev. Cindy Foster Serio, spiritual director and retreat leader, Mosaic Spiritual Formation Ministry The information regarding tuberculosis is insightful. The biography walks the reader through some very important points and offers some food for thought on the thinking at the time and implications for the race, the individual and the family unit. - Dr. Lisa Armitige, medical consultant, Heartland National TB Center

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sager Brown, as an orphanage and school in the bayou country of Louisiana, served the intellectual and social developmental interests of black children for over a century when few if any other avenues were available. Their story is one of compassion and heartfelt dedication of key individuals who, with help, countered the destructive force of oppression of post-emancipation and segregation, resulting in thousands of redeemed lives. A brief history of the Bayou Teche area is offered to pinpoint the site of the school, which exists today as the major shipping depot of the United Methodist Committee on Relief for relief supplies both nationally and worldwide. Divine intervention is in evidence throughout the book as the institution ebbs and flows from one crisis to the next, always raising its head to move forward from apparently insurmountable odds to the new light of day. Although Sager Brown is and has always been a Methodist church-supported institution, anyone interested in the plight of children and their eventual redemption will find the book a worthwhile read. It was a joy to document the only in-depth history of this historic institution. "The first week I spent as a volunteer at Sager Brown. I, too, knew I was on 'holy ground.'" I am indebted to Craig Fisher for telling the world how this wonderful facility came to be, for it explains why it has always been a sacred spot. Craig's research is thorough, his presentation scholarly, but he has also captured the essence of the ministry that continues today in Baldwin, Louisiana." Su Kelley, multi-year Sager Brown volunteer and long-time Bible teacher "It is my privilege to recommend Sager Brown: Sacred Ground as an excellent informational and inspirational history of the institution known as Sager Brown in Baldwin, Louisiana. United Methodists are known to be people of "head and heart' and Dr. Fisher has masterfully woven the threads of the history of this institution to reflect both the passion that inspired and supported it for generations and the hard facts of its impact on countless numbers of children and indeed an entire community. Not only does Dr. Fisher tell the story of the struggle of an institution of change to survive in the deep South, he illustrates the influence persons of passion can have on an institution, a region of the country, and even a nation through a lifetime of service. from a larger perspective, he also tells the story of the denomination's unceasing desire to be relevant to the needs of the world as they change over the centuries. Every obstacle became an opportunity for God to open a new pathway for building HIS kingdom." Rev. Dawne Phillips, Director of Missions, Texas Central Conference, United Methodist Church.

Book excerpt: Religion and the Rise of Jim Crow in New Orleans examines a difficult chapter in American religious history: the story of race prejudice in American Christianity. Focusing on the largest city in the late-nineteenth-century South, it explores the relationship between churches--black and white, Protestant and Catholic--and the emergence of the Jim Crow laws, statutes that created a racial caste system in the American South. The book fills a gap in the scholarship on religion and race in the crucial decades between the end of Reconstruction and the eve of the Civil Rights movement. Drawing on a range of local and personal accounts from the post-Reconstruction period, newspapers, and church records, Bennett's analysis challenges the assumption that churches fell into fixed patterns of segregation without a fight. In sacred no less than secular spheres, establishing Jim Crow constituted a long, slow, and complicated journey that extended well into the twentieth century. Churches remained a source of hope and a means of resistance against segregation, rather than a retreat from racial oppression. Especially in the decade after Reconstruction, churches offered the possibility of creating a common identity that privileged religious over racial status, a pattern that black church members hoped would transfer to a national American identity transcending racial differences. Religion thus becomes a lens to reconsider patterns for racial interaction throughout Southern society. By tracing the contours of that hopeful yet ultimately tragic journey, this book reveals the complex and mutually influential relationship between church and society in the American South, placing churches at the center of the nation's racial struggles.
