Book excerpt: Voice Studies brings together leading international scholars and practitioners, to re-examine what voice is, what voice does, and what we mean by "voice studies" in the process and experience of performance. This dynamic and interdisciplinary publication draws on a broad range of approaches, from composing and voice teaching through to psychoanalysis and philosophy, including: voice training from the Alexander Technique to practice-as-research; operatic and extended voices in early baroque and contemporary underwater singing; voices across cultures, from site-specific choral performance in Kentish mines and Australian sound art, to the laments of Kraho Indians, Korean pansori and Javanese wayang; voice, embodiment and gender in Robertson’s 1798 production of Phantasmagoria, Cathy Berberian radio show, and Romeo Castellucci’s theatre; perceiving voice as a composer, listener, or as eavesdropper; voice, technology and mobile apps. With contributions spanning six continents, the volume considers the processes of teaching or writing for voice, the performance of voice in theatre, live art, music, and on recordings, and the experience of voice in acoustic perception and research. It concludes with a multifaceted series of short provocations that simply revisit the core question of the whole volume: what is voice studies?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this volume is to showcase the contemporary state of research on recognizing and evaluating the performance of stone age weapons from a variety of viewpoints, including investigating their cognitive and evolutionary significance. New archaeological finds and experimental studies have helped to bring this subject back to the forefront of human origins research. In the last few years, investigations have expanded beyond examining the tools themselves to include studies of damage caused by projectile weapons on animal and hominin bones and skeletal asymmetries in ancient hominin populations. Only recently has there been a growing interest in controlled and replicative experiments. Through this book readers will be updated in the state of knowledge through a multidisciplinary scientific reconstruction of prehistoric weapon use and its implications. Contributions from expert authors are organized into three themed parts: recognizing weapon use (experimental and archaeological studies of impact traces), performance of weapon systems (factors influencing penetration depth etc.), and behavioral and evolutionary ramifications (cognitive and ecological effects of using different weapons).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses mixed methods to extend the concept of “wellbeing stocks” to refer to dynamic ways of working with others. It addresses metaphors and praxis for weaving together strands of experience. The aim of the wellbeing stocks concept is to enable people to re-evaluate economics and to become more aware of the way in which we neglect social and environmental aspects of life. The pursuit of profit at the expense of people and the environment is a central problem for democracy and governance. The vulnerability of cities is a symptom of the lack of balance between individual and collective needs. This book explores the potential for cities, specifically in the regions of Indonesia, Africa, and Australia, to become more productive as sites for food and water security through more creative use of technology. It highlights the need for partners that see food and security feasible at the household level if supports are provided at the community, national and international level. The book examines how these regions are affected by demographics, climate change and people movements, but also explores ways to establish an effective cultural ecosystem management.

This book was released on 2024-06-08 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface Today the world is marked by increasing complexity, where the boundaries between disciplines become increasingly interconnected. Therefore, the dialogue between different areas of knowledge is essential for the understanding and solution of the diverse challenges we face. This book, "Multidisciplinary Studies: Management and Legal Sciences", is born of this understanding, bringing a comprehensive and integrated perspective on important topics that permeate management and law. Management and the legal sciences, although traditionally seen as distinct fields, share a deep interdependence. Business and administrative decisions are inevitably shaped by regulatory and legal frameworks, as well as legal legislation and practices are influenced by organizational and economic dynamics. This book explores this intersection, highlighting how the collaboration between managers and jurists can generate innovative and effective solutions to contemporary problems. Throughout the chapters, readers will have the opportunity to discover a diversity of approaches and methodologies that reflect the nature of the topics covered, will find practical cases analyzes and theoretical studies. Each contribution enriches the understanding of how these areas can interact productively. Thus, in the world where change is a constant, the ability to integrate knowledge and collaborate beyond traditional boundaries becomes a strategic differential. "Multidisciplinary Studies: Management and Legal Sciences" is a valuable contribution to this movement, offering tools and reflections that enable managers and jurists to navigate more effective and creativity in todays and tomorrow challenges. We hope that this work will inspire not only greater understanding between the areas of management and law, but also a more collaborative and innovative professional practice. May it serve as a starting point for new research, debates and, above all, to the practical application of interdisciplinary knowledge that contribute to the common good. Good reading! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amphibians are important components of ecosystems worldwide and are already being negatively affected by contemporary rapid changes in climate. Climate strongly affects the distribution, abundance, and ecology of amphibian species. Changes in climate will have impacts on amphibian biodiversity that are not uniform across the globe. We highlight geographic areas expected to have more climate change impacts to amphibians in order to target them for biological mitigation and conservation action. Although adaptation by amphibians to climate change is happening, it will generally be too slow to prevent many negative consequences that will likely happen in the next few decades. We review known and potential impacts of climate change on amphibians and make recommendations for research and conservation actions.
