The Journal of Character Education has for over a decade been the sole scholarly journal focused on research, theory, measurement, and practice of character education. In this issue of the Journal of Character Education we return to something foundational and introduce something new. The foundational element is a set of six independent scholarly manuscripts by a mix of emerging and established scholars. We are pleased to introduce a new feature of the Journal of Character Education in this issue, namely a section we are calling simply "Opinion." We began the JCE with an exclusive focus on publishing scholarship because there was no scholarly journal that focused on character education. Over time we realized that we wanted to speak about practice and particularly to practitioners as well. Hence we created a section we call "Voices" to present innovations and perspectives representing the "voices" of exemplary practitioners of character education. Now we introduce the "Opinion" section that will allow us to publish perspectives from leading authorities in the field that might be more provocative. We would love to hear responses to either or both opinion articles and are working on plans to share such responses, perhaps on one of our related websites. At this point, we plan on publishing more opinion articles, and for now, by invitation. However, we are always willing to consider unsolicited articles for possible inclusion in the JCE.

The issue of sustainability as the core principle to govern the today society – social, cultural, political and education – has been more prominent yet faced more difficult and unprecedented challenges. The academic conference addresses the issue of sustainability of social, education and political values, traditions and activities pursued by human beings in their daily life as now have been entirely affected by the pandemic. On the one hand, there is an inherent risk of the modern living, the vulnerability of human being and the power of nature that must be not only understood and learnt but also institutionalized and structured in various arena of social life of the people. On the other hand, there has been a tremendous change on the ways the social features of human living – from simple informal meeting/gathering of neighborhoods to daily shopping, formal working at the office/home, school teachings, professional football matches, elections and government/state ceremonies – being re-defined, reconstructed and carried out with online/virtual media. This new social fabric – thank to the Internet! – will eventually re-shape all established social institutions – states/government bodies, private companies, churches/religious organizations, schools/universities and so forth – on their approaches and serve the populace as well as their adaptation and change to survive and sustain.

Along with the development of science, creativity and technology in the fields of psychology, education, and guidance and counseling, various innovations and intervention in the implementation of counseling have been carried out. Especially with the Covid-19 pandemic, which is still on going, various creative interventions in counseling have begun to be widely used. Starting from the use of images for therapy or art therapy, dance movement and the use of other creative media to support the counselee. The need for creative media and innovation in the implementation of counseling is very important at this time, considering that during the pandemic the intensity of face-to-face contact with counselees and counselors is quite limited and most of them use online media. Saturation in the use of online media is also possible to occur a lot, therefore with the existence of creative interventions that can be guided by a virtual counselor, it will be very interesting for the counselee as well as having a therapeutic impact. Therefore, an international seminar was held with the theme creative counseling intervention. This activity can be followed by guidance and counseling teachers, counselors or various other mental health practitioners to increase information and knowledge about creative interventions in counseling. In the end, participants can provide creative and effective counseling services to their counselees.
