Book excerpt: The Ocean Dark is a riveting novel of suspense from Christopher Golden, author of Tin Men, written under the pseudonym Jack Rogan. In the uncharted waters of the Caribbean, far from the usual shipping lanes, lies a mysterious island surrounded by a graveyard of sunken ships—an island so remote that it’s the perfect rendezvous point for a handful of Central American arms dealers and the Antoinette, a gun-smuggling cargo ship out of Miami. Amid the wreckage of ships new and old, the crew of the Antoinette—and the undercover FBI agent on board—enter what looks like a haven for modern pirates, only to discover that it hides something far more terrifying. In Washington, two Department of Defense scientists might understand what is about to happen. On an FBI ship monitoring the Antoinette’s illegal trade, armed agents might be able to intervene. But this assumes that the Antoinette’s crew survives their first encounter with a creature virtually unknown to man, yet whose eerie songs nevertheless echo down the corridors of mankind’s darkest legends. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christmas Day, 3:00 a.m., December 25, 2015 The final chapter in man’s search for truth began with a single event that took place in the wee hours of Christmas morning, 2015. A crippling blizzard of epic proportion had blanketed the entire northeastern corridor with an opaque shroud of ice and wind-driven snow. All ground and air transportation was at a complete standstill as residents throughout the Atlantic coastal area hunkered down in their homes awaiting a reprieve from nature’s fury. This explains why Ray Hodges was fast asleep at his desk in the air traffic control tower of Dulles International Airport. After doing absolutely nothing for the past six hours, he was bored stiff and had planned to rest his eyes for only a moment. Forty-five minutes later, Hodges was awakened by a high-pitched alarm warning him of an incoming bogey. The aircraft’s radar signature was that of a TWA Constellation, a prop-driven plane that he had not seen since the early 1960s. The anonymous intruder was flying dangerously close to the high value targets in Washington DC, and Hodges was required to establish immediate radio contact with the inbound aircraft. Using multiple radio frequencies, he tried to hail the pilot, with no response. This perilous situation prompted an urgent call to the Strategic Air Command at Andrews Air Base, and within minutes of notification, a squadron of F18 jets had surrounded the aircraft. The team leader contacted Hodges and reported that he too was unable to communicate with the pilot. Then the pilot said something that made Hodges’s skin crawl. “Dulles, there seems to be multiple objects protruding through the fuselage of the plane. Understand the visibility up here is marginal, but those objects look a lot like body parts.” Hodges instantly felt a gnawing pain centered in the pit of his stomach. Thus began one young man’s journey into the crypts of the unknown. It was a place where all reality was an illusion.

Book excerpt: A dangerously sexy new standalone romance from New York Times bestseller Kim Karr. We each had a plan. We knew what we were doing. Until love got in our way. The first time Caleb Holt strode into the room I was absolutely certain I knew his type. A man too gorgeous for his own good, he was sexy, brooding, and so full of himself, I thought he could easily be fooled. I was wrong. Those brilliant green eyes followed me everywhere. With each glance, I swore he could see into my soul, read my determination, uncover my secrets. It worried me. I should have stayed far away from him.I didn't.It just seemed impossible to fight the searing desire that flowed through my veins whenever he was near. I could have tried harder. The thing was I belonged to another man, as in the other man owned me, literally.Caleb didn't care.He should have. Before Caleb came into my life I had a plan to get back what was taken from me. The cost was irrelevant. Now I'm not sure I can sell my soul to the devil because I fear it belongs to him. The problem is he has a plan of his own and I can't risk his plan taking priority over mine. Not even for love. When playing a game of cat and mouse the heart can never win.Or can it?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Show business is today so essential to American culture it's hard to imagine a time when it was marginal. But as David Monod demonstrates, the appetite for amusements outside the home was not "natural": it developed slowly over the course of the nineteenth century. The Soul of Pleasure offers a new interpretation of how the taste for entertainment was cultivated. Monod focuses on the shifting connection between the people who built successful popular entertainments and the public who consumed them. Show people discovered that they had to adapt entertainment to the moral outlook of Americans, which they did by appealing to sentiment. The Soul of Pleasure explores several controversial forms of popular culture—minstrel acts, burlesques, and saloon variety shows—and places them in the context of changing values and perceptions. Far from challenging respectability, Monod argues that entertainments reflected and transformed the audience's ideals. In the mid-nineteenth century, sentimentality not only infused performance styles and the content of shows but also altered the expectations of the theatergoing public. Sentimental entertainment depended on sensational effects that produced surprise, horror, and even gales of laughter. After the Civil War the sensational charge became more important than the sentimental bond, and new forms of entertainment gained in popularity and provided the foundations for vaudeville, America’s first mass entertainment. Ultimately, it was American entertainment’s variety that would provide the true soul of pleasure.
