Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Walker is one of Canada's most prolific and important documentary filmmakers and is known for his many thoughtful, personally inflected films. His masterwork, Passage, centres on Sir John Franklin's failed expedition to find the final link of the Northwest Passage connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the Canadian Arctic. It also gives us the story of John Rae, the Scottish explorer who discovered the fate of Franklin and the final link in the passage, but was left to the margins of history. Walker's film brings to this story a layering of dramatic action and behind-the-scenes documentary footage that build tension between the story of the past and interpretations of the present. Darrell Varga provides a close analysis of Passage, situating it within Walker's rich body of work and the Canadian documentary tradition. Varga illuminates how the film can be viewed through the lens of Harold Innis's theories of communication and culture, opening up the work of this great Canadian political economist to film studies.

Book excerpt: The Andromeda Strain meets The Stand in this startling and stunning thriller that brings to life a unique vision of the apocalypse and plays brilliantly with vampire mythology, revealing what becomes of human society when a top-secret government experiment spins wildly out of control. At an army research station in Colorado, an experiment is being conducted by the U.S. Government: twelve men are exposed to a virus meant to weaponize the human form by super-charging the immune system. But when the experiment goes terribly wrong, terror is unleashed. Amy, a young girl abandoned by her mother and set to be the thirteenth test subject, is rescued by Brad Wolgast, the FBI agent who has been tasked with handing her over, and together they escape to the mountains of Oregon. As civilization crumbles around them, Brad and Amy struggle to keep each other alive, clinging to hope and unable to comprehend the nightmare that approaches with great speed and no mercy. . .

Book excerpt: This is the annotated edition including a rare and extensive biographical essay on the author, as well as an introductory to the book written by George Parsons Lathrop. The series of passages from the "American Note-Books" covers the space of eighteen years, almost to a day; the extracts running from June 15, 1835, to June 9, 1853; and in a detached way it represents the main part of Hawthorne's career throughout the period of his rise from obscurity to fame, purely as a growth of American soil and conditions, before he had ever set foot in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stepping Westward is the first book dedicated to the literature of the Scottish Highland tour of 1720-1830, a major cultural phenomenon that attracted writers and artists like Pennant, Johnson and Boswell, William and Dorothy Wordsworth, Coleridge, Scott, Hogg, Keats, Daniell, and Turner, as well as numerous less celebrated travellers and tourists. Addressing more than a century's worth of literary and visual representations of the Highlands, the book casts new light on how the tour developed a modern literature of place, acting as a catalyst for thinking about improvement, landscape, and the shaping of British, Scottish, and Gaelic identities. It pays attention to the relationship between travellers and the native Gaels, whose world was plunged into crisis by rapid and forced social change. At the book's core lie the best-selling tours of Pennant and Dr Johnson, associated with attempts to 'improve' the intractable Gaidhealtachd in the wake of Culloden. Alongside the Ossian craze and Gilpin's picturesque, their books stimulated a wave of 'home tours' from the 1770s through the romantic period, including writing by women like Sarah Murray and Dorothy Wordsworth. The incidence of published Highland Tours (many lavishly illustrated), peaked around 1800, but as the genre reached exhaustion, the 'romantic Highlands' were reinvented in Scott's poems and novels, coinciding with steam boats and mass tourism, but also rack-renting, sheep clearance, and emigration.

Book excerpt: A Bible Study through Romans Oh the depth of this letter to the Roman believers by the apostle Paul, where we, each one of us can see ourselves, maybe even our old selves revealed, and the Way, the Truth, and Gods transforming power that has and continues to save and change us. Yes all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Why? Because we have, each and every one, inherited a (the) sin nature, disobedience, from the fall, from the one man. And because of this we all, again, were enemies of God, afar off and at enmity. Yet in His great love for us we learn that even while we were His enemies, God gave His only Son to die on a cross that we might have our sins forgiven; if we believe. Now we have a new nature, a new man, alongside the old, that can grow in grace and strength and cause the old nature to be buried. At least as much as is possible in these mortal and fleshly bodies: and as much as we are willing to yield to the Spirits leading, and obey. Who are those who are without excuse? Who are those who are inexcusable? Is there any hope for those who God has given over? I think maybe. Who are the branches, and who does the wild olive tree refer to? What was the hoped outcome in provoking the Jews to jealousy? We read of works versus grace; of the war between the mind and the Spirit, and that even when we are unfaithful, God is faithful; He cannot deny Himself. Wow! Just pause for a moment and absorb that. What an amazing God we serve! What a beautiful, strong, encouraging, convicting, challenging and promise filled letter Paul has written. Yes, I understand that I have scarcely touched the surface. Still my prayer is for even a fraction of Gods message, His power, love and teaching will come through this study. I confess that I know so little, but He is so big! Please Father might all who work through these pages see You, and embrace all that You in Christ Jesus have done for us. May You be lifted up and praised and adored for You. In the power of Jesus name I pray and thank You for this privilege. Amen.
