Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Bannister Tabb: The Priest-Poet A miniature painted in France in 1578 by the artist Hilliard bears the inscription: "If one could but paint his mind!" Happier than the artist, the lyric singer can paint his soul in his poems, and our Priest-Poet has painted his in most exquisite miniature, so that the world is better for the gift. In this little volume I have been content, in the main, to put forth the delicate work of his poetic brush, as my readers will agree. Indeed, I have more than once accused myself of presumption in undertaking to comment upon the rare creations of one so far above me as the Reverend John Bannister Tabb. But admiration for the poet and respect for his memory, combined with my desire to make him known and loved, especially by the young, have urged me to so unequal a task. I may add that these chapters are founded upon a lecture I gave to the young ladies of a certain convent in 1907, chiefly upon the poems, for my knowledge of Father Tabb's biography was then even more meager than it will appear to those who peruse these pages. Download or read book Emma Lazarus written by Esther Schor and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the National Jewish Book Award Emma Lazarus’s most famous poem gave a voice to the Statue of Liberty, but her remarkable story has remained a mystery until now. Drawing upon a cache of personal letters undiscovered until the 1980s, Esther Schor brings this vital woman to life in all her complexity—as a feminist, a Zionist, and a trailblazing Jewish-American writer. Schor argues persuasively for Lazarus’s place in history as an activist and a prophet of the world we all inhabit today. As a stunning rebuke to fear, xenophobia, and isolationism, Lazarus's life and work are more relevant now than ever before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A delightfully ghoulish array of specters and sorceresses, witches and ghosts, hags and apparitions haunt these pages–a literary parade of phantoms and shades to add to the revelry of All Hallow’s Eve. From Homer to Horace, Pope to Poe, Randall Jarrell to James Merrill, Poems Bewitched and Haunted draws on three thousand years of poetic forays into the supernatural. Ovid conjures the witch Medea, Virgil channels Aeneas’s wife from the afterlife, Baudelaire lays bare the wiles of the incubus, and Emily Dickinson records two souls conversing in a crypt, in poems that call out to be read aloud, whether around the campfire or the Ouija board. From ballads and odes, to spells and chants, to dialogues and incantations, here is a veritable witches’ brew of poems from the spirit world.
