Book Synopsis Caspar David Friedrich by : Sabine Rewald
Download or read book Caspar David Friedrich written by Sabine Rewald and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2001 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), a major figure in the German Romantic movement, painted sublime works representing nature at its most melancholic and desolate. One of his most famous motifs was that of two intimate figures, seen from behind, gazing at the moon. Friedrich painted three versions of this theme, one of which -- Two Men Contemplating the Moon -- has recently been acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The book discusses the Metropolitan's painting in conjunction with the other two versions and a number of related paintings and drawings by Friedrich and his Dresden friends. It also presents fascinating details about the moon itself -- including what was known about it in Friedrich's lifetime and its presence and symbolism in contemporary Romantic poetry.
Book Synopsis A Dialogue with Nature by : Matthew Hargraves
Download or read book A Dialogue with Nature written by Matthew Hargraves and published by Paul Holberton Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Organized by the Morgan and London's Courtauld Gallery, A Dialogue with Nature explores aspects of Romantic landscape drawing in Britain and Germany from the 1760s to 1840s. The exhibition draws upon the strengths of both collections—the Morgan's exceptional group of German drawings and The Courtauld Gallery's extensive holdings of British works—in order to consider points of commonality and divergence between the two distinctive schools. Taken together, these drawings exemplify Caspar David Friedrich's understanding of Romantic landscape draftsmanship as 'a dialogue with Nature.' The exhibition will include thirty-seven works that represent the two central elements of the Romantic conception of landscape: close observation of the natural world and the importance of the imagination."--

Book Synopsis Nine Letters on Landscape Painting by : Carl Gustav Carus
Download or read book Nine Letters on Landscape Painting written by Carl Gustav Carus and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869)--court physician to the king of Saxony--was a naturalist, amateur painter, and theoretician of landscape painting whose Nine Letters on Landscape Painting is an important document of early German romanticism and an elegant appeal for the integration of art and science. Carus was inspired by and had contacts with the greatest German intellectuals of his day. Carus prefaced his work with a letter from his correspondence with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was his primary mentor in both science and art. His writings also reflect, however, the influence of the German natural philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, especially Schelling's notion of a world soul, and the writings of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Carus played a role in the revolution in landscape painting taking place in Saxony around Caspar David Friedrich. The first edition appears here in English for the first time.
