It has a good (an at-the-core kind of good) message that should be understood no matter your age, ethnicity, or sex. —Bookworm Review Throughout life one is confronted with many questions for which there seem to be no answers. Or if there are answers, they may seem so far away from one’s abilities. They may seem to ask too much of us in time or money. They may lead to more questions: Where are you in life? Are you where you want to be? Are you who you want to be? These are some of the questions Dr. Robert Benson and other characters face in author John Teofilo Padilla Jr.’s book, Joe and Peace Eternal. Dr. Benson has one goal in life—to cure cancer. Many people would just give up, but he learns of a lifestyle and mind-set that keeps him going. His work brings many cures and accolades—and threats, danger, and death. Dr. Benson begets a son. Joe learns swordplay, and martial arts on his path to a climactic battle of good vs evil. Filled with likable characters—including Joe, who shares his father’s philosophy—Joe and Peace Eternal will have you thinking about your goals and beliefs. And about what is possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, including Israel, there are a growing number of adherents to Messianic Judaism. Messianic Jews form a religious group that believes Yeshua Hamashiach (the Hebrew name for Jesus the Messiah) is the true Messiah as known in Christianity and the New Testament. In Eternity with Yeshua Hamashiach we learn about the journey to an expanded faith of a dozen real-life Jews who embraced Yeshua, some only in their final days and hours. Already strong in their Jewish faith and practices, the men and women in these stories come to a better understanding of the place of faith in this life and in the hereafter. Some are open about their conjoined faith, while others are secret believers or not yet fully converted. While their stories are different, they have one thing in common: they all have a common heritage. They are Jewish individuals who have placed their faith in the Son of God. The engaging stories in Eternity with Yeshua Hamashiach will help those who want to understand their Jewish friends better and inform Jewish people who are thinking about Yeshua.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though it has often been passionately criticized--as fraudulent, exploitative, even pagan--the American funeral home has become nearly as inevitable as death itself, an institution firmly embedded in our culture. But how did the funeral home come to hold such a position? What is its history? And is it guilty of the charges sometimes leveled against it? In Rest in Peace, Gary Laderman traces the origins of American funeral rituals, from the evolution of embalming techniques during and after the Civil War and the shift from home funerals to funeral homes at the turn of the century, to the increasing subordination of priests, ministers, and other religious figures to the funeral director throughout the twentieth century. In doing so he shows that far from manipulating vulnerable mourners, as Jessica Mitford claimed in her best-selling The American Way of Death (1963), funeral directors are highly respected figures whose services reflect the community's deepest needs and wishes. Indeed, Laderman shows that funeral directors generally give the people what they want when it is time to bury our dead. He reveals, for example, that the open casket, often criticized as barbaric, provides a deeply meaningful moment for friends and family who must say goodbye to their loved one. But he also shows how the dead often come back to life in the popular imagination to disturb the peace of the living. Drawing upon interviews with funeral directors, major historical events like the funerals of John F. Kennedy and Rudolf Valentino, films, television, newspaper reports, proposals for funeral reform, and other primary sources, Rest in Peace cuts through the rhetoric to show us the reality--and the real cultural value--of the American funeral.

Book excerpt: John Dear, SJ, believes that social activism and faith are inseparable. Acting in the name of the nonviolent Jesus, Dear has been arrested more than seventy-five times, has spent more than a year of his life in jail, and has been mocked by armed U.S. soldiers standing outside the doors to his New Mexico parish. A Persistent Peace, John Dear's autobiography, invites readers to follow the decades-long journey of social activism and spiritual growth of this nationally known peace activist and to witness his bold, decisive, often unpopular actions on behalf of peace. From his conversion to Christianity, to his calling to become a Jesuit, to the extreme dangers and delights of a life dedicated to truly living out the radical, forgiving love of Jesus, John's incredible story of social activism will touch anyone who believes in the power of peace.
