Book excerpt: Joaquín Sorolla (born in Valencia 1863 died in Cercedilla 1923) is one of the most successful Spanish painters ever. He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. He lived while photography was being invented and popularized. Some of his breathtaking seascapes show how he was familiar with and employed similar techniques as the photograph. His paintings are also a great introduction to Spanish history. Most of his paintings of boats and the sea capture the fishermen in Valencia, who fished from the beach. He has painted several masterpieces of the returning boats being pulled to the beach. The oxen used to pull the boats are captured so strong, so life like, with so much love. He also painted the waiting fisherwomen and the children happily playing. He painted scenes from the lives of the fishermen. Sorollas paintings are extremely powerful and colorful and although he is usually labelled an impressionist, he is also often very naturalist and detailed. The reader is kindly referred to our book about Sorollas landscapes. This book is not a catalogue, the authors have put together a narrative and the reader may find some of the paintings in our other books as well.

He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. He lived while photography was being invented and popularized. Joaquín Sorolla painted the most wonderful beach scenes and fisheries scenes from his native Valencia. His picture The Return from Fishing (1894) was much admired at the Paris Salon and was acquired by the state for the Musée du Luxembourg. It indicated the direction of his mature output. A special exhibition of his works-figure subjects, landscapes and portraits-at the Galeries Georges Petit in Paris in 1906 eclipsed all his earlier successes and led to his appointment as Officer of the Legion of Honour. The show included nearly 500 works, early paintings as well as recent sun-drenched beach scenes, landscapes, and portraits, a productivity which amazed critics and was a financial triumph. Though subsequent large-scale exhibitions in Germany and London were greeted with more restraint, while in England in 1908 Sorolla met Archer Milton Huntington, who made him a member of The Hispanic Society of America in New York, and invited him to exhibit there in 1909. The exhibition comprised 356 paintings, 195 of which sold. Sorolla spent five months in America and painted more than twenty portraits.

Book excerpt: Joaquín Sorolla (born in Valencia 1863 - died in Cercedilla 1923) is one of the most successful Spanish painters ever. He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. He was a master of light. Giving an overview of his incredible huge production with over 4,000 works is inherently a subjective choice by the curator. Like with an exhibition, what is the point you are making? This selection is not intended as a challenge to other experts, but a celebration of the genius. Joaquín Sorolla painted to please his patrons, to make money for a good living, to create a solid inheritance for his family and descendants. He was a deeply responsible father, shaped by his own childhood. He was Catholic and believed in mercy. He also had humor and he delighted in the artistic joke, which showed his friendly and beautiful spirit.

Book excerpt: Joaquín Sorolla (born in Valencia 1863 - died in Cercedilla 1923) is one of the most successful Spanish painters ever. He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. He was a master of light. Joaquín Sorolla loved his wife and his family. He painted them all the time. He lived in the time when photography was being invented and commercialized. Sorolla created a virtual family album with his wonderful paintings. He invited us to see and share his happiness. Sorolla was not shy about his family as many of his contemporaries were. He sold many paintings that showed his family, especially his daughter María was a favorite with the public, and Sorolla jokingly called María the breadwinner of the family. He wanted us to share his view of the ideal family as he shared his view of a great and united Spain. Sorolla painted dogs and a cat as pets, as part of the family, superbly catching their soul and character.

Modern fireboats are capable of pumping sometimes tens of thousands of gallons of water per minute and are very fast. Fireboats are used for fighting fires on docks and shore side warehouses or even wildfires as they can directly attack fires when close by. Fureboats also have an effectively unlimited supply of water available, pumping directly from below the hull. Fireboats are most usually seen by the public when welcoming a fleet or historical ships with a display of their water moving capabilities, throwing large arcs of water in every direction. Book excerpt: A little gem dedicated to Sorolla and the Mediterranean. Sorolla and the Sea brings together 24 works by Joaquin Sorolla, accompanied by a text by Manuel Vicent, which make up a gleaming portrait of the Mediterranean sea, as present in the painter's oeuvre as the eternal longing for one's childhood. A see that evokes play, freedom and pleasure, but also bears witness to the struggle for survival: golden oxen in the middle of the waves pulling the fishing boats, drenched sailors carrying fish crates amid the swell, fishmongers waiting in the beach with their baskets held against their hips and mustard-coloured latin-rigs of boats pulling their nets in pairs. Sorolla and the Sea is a pleasure for the senses. A book to enjoy and gift. A homage to the sea, to its light and colours, but also to the passions and struggles of the sea men and women. A little gem dedicated to Sorolla. AUTHOR: Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923) is one of the most widely recognised Spanish Painters. He excelled in portraiture, landscape and painting of historical and social themes. His best known work is characterised by a skilled representation of people and landscapes under the bright sun of his homeland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new survey of the best works by the elusive and spectacular Spanish Impressionist Joaquín Sorolla. Often compared to his contemporary, the American artist John Singer Sargent, Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was a master draftsman and painter of landscapes, formal portraits, and monumental, historically themed canvases. Highly influenced by French Impressionism, the Valencian artist was a master plein-air painter known for his luminous seaside scenes of frolicking youths and for vivid depictions of Spanish rural life and its pleasures and customs. This beautifully designed and produced volume brings together one hundred of Sorolla’s major paintings, selected by his great-granddaughter Blanca Pons-Sorolla, the foremost authority on the artist. Benefiting from close proximity to the artist and his personal archives, she presents an in-depth essay that explores Sorolla’s life, work, and remarkable international legacy. With virtually all of the artist’s previous publications now out of print, this much-anticipated volume is an important addition to the literature on this great Spanish master.

Book excerpt: The Feuerwehr (German: fire defence) is a number of German fire departments. The responsible bodies for operating and equipping fire departments are the German communities ("Gemeinden") and cities ("Städte"). By law, they are required to operate fire-fighting forces. In cities, this is usually performed by the Fire Prevention Bureau, one of the higher-ranking authorities. There are three kinds of firefighters in Germany: the predominant number of Germany's 1,383,730 firefighters are members of voluntary fire brigades (Freiwillige Feuerwehr), a lesser number are working in professional fire brigades and the smallest are the drafted members of a Compulsory Fire Service (Pflichtfeuerwehr), established just in a few places nationwide. Here we look at some of their flashy vehicles. We hope you will enjoy our selection of photos.

It was not until the early 1480s, when Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci created a design for an "aerial screw", but In 1942, the Sikorsky R-4 became the first helicopter to reach full-scale production. Fixed wing aircraft are also used as ambulances and fire fighting vehicles. Today, rescue vehicles are technologically highly developed with specialized equipment and specially trained paramedics to keep people alive until they can get care at a hospital.
