Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Services in Synagogue and Home The volume has been much swelled by the necessity of laying before my readers the chief parts of our liturgy and samples of the later and less, essential parts in a faithful English translation, as the greater number of those whom this book will reach are not acquainted with the old Prayer Book, that peculiar treasure of Israel, nor even possessed of a copy, otherwise I might, like German authors on the subject, have referred to parts of the prayers by name with out embodying them in the text. Longer passages from the Bible, such as whole Psalms, are not copied, but simply cited. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sabbath-School Hymnal: A Collection of Songs, Services and Responsive Readings for the School, Synagogue and Home He wishes to express his deepfelt thanks to Mrs. Marion Froelich, with out. Whose assistance he could never have completed this stupendous task. Iler greater experience and richer vocabulary often accomplished, with a few touches, the translation of a poem which the writer would have abandoned in despair. To Prof. Gideon Froelich, whose genius has enriched this book with its finest melodies, no words are adequate to express the editor's grati tude and appreciation. For many years the organist of the above mentioned congregation, he has caught the spirit of Jewish melody, and the character of Jewish worship. His greater reward he will find in the joy which his compositions will produce in the hearts of thousands of Jewish children and in the gratitude of many worshipers in the Syna gogue and the home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Down Home: Jewish Life in North Carolina Carolina in its early days was a polyglot immigrant society. Native Americans and African Americans added to the ethnic mix. A welter of religious sects - Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Catholic, Presbyterian, Anglican, Quaker, and Moravian made it welcoming to religious diversity even as its Protestant character led it to suspect those who did not share the faith. North Carolina largely lacked the entrenched social hierarchies of its north ern and southern neighbors. North Carolina was the proverbial vale of humility between two mountains of conceit. For much of its history, its representative citizen was the yeoman farmer in contrast to the cavalier of Virginia or the Low Country aristocrat of South Carolina. The log cabin and the wood-framed farm house, not the plantation manse, are its iconic dwellings. North Carolina's motto is To be, rather than to seem. North Carolina has been a place of small towns. When historian Lee Shai Weissbach did a comparative study, Jewish Life in Small Town America: A History, he documented that North Carolina in 1927 was the most extreme of all states in its profile, with thirteen communities of more than 100 Jews but none with over North Carolina's small-town character explains much of its politics and social values - as well as the Jewish acculturation there. In contrast to most states, North Carolina lacked a Jewish urban capital, an Atlanta, Baltimore, or New York. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewish community has lost some of the most sensitive spiritual souls of this generation. They are Jews who were looking for God and found spiritual homes outside of Judaism. Their journeys traversed the Jewish community, but nothing there beckoned them. The creation of synagogue-communities in which the voices of seekers can be heard and their questions can be asked will challenge many loyalist Jews. It will upset and enrage them. But it would also enrich them. —from Chapter 18 In this fresh look at the spiritual possibilities of American Jewish life, Rabbi Sidney Schwarz presents the framework for a new synagogue model—the synagogue community—and its promise to transform our understanding of the synagogue and its potential for modern Judaism. Schwarz profiles four innovative synagogues—one from each of the major movements of Judaism—that have had extraordinary success with their approach to congregational life and presents practical ways to replicate their success. Includes a discussion guide for study groups and book clubs as well as a new afterword by the author describing developments in synagogue change projects since the book was first published.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Service-Hymnal: With an Introductory Service The Service Hymnal was prepared to meet the needs of The Service Manual, and is designed for use in the synagogue, the religious school and the home. It contains the music of the responses and hymns of the Sabbath and Holy-Day Services, and a selection of hymns for special devotions and national festivals. Traditional melodies have been preserved wherever possible, and the musical settings of the responses have been taken mainly from Jewish sources. The Psalms, the fountain-head of religious fervor and inspiration, have been especially drawn upon for texts of the hymns, and their metrical form is, to a large extent, the paraphrase of classical writers. A conscientious effort has been made to select tunes and texts that are easily learned, and that, at the same time, deepen devotional spirit and lend greater beauty to the service. The Introductory Service is designed for special devotions, and for the religious exercises of the Sabbath School.
