Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles provides: - authentic practitioner accounts of the Solution Focus(SF) approach being used successfully in team coaching and organizational development all around the world. They were written by authors like Yasuteru Aoki, Jesper H. Christiansen, Jenny Clarke, Hannes Couvreur, Kirsten Dierolf, Ben Furman, Dominik Godat, Chris Iveson, Marco Ronzani and Peter Szabó. - smart practices on how to face serious organizational development challenges such as attracting and keeping good people, facilitating the formation of high performing teams, improving career management and succession planning, increasing job commitment, support motivation and reducing stress. - tools to enhance the link between individual, team and organizational goals and their achievement - interviews with leaders who use SF in their everyday work to motivate employees, create team unity, facilitate open communication, encourage action and innovation, maintain vision and perspective. Our hope for this book is that leaders and employees in organizations, coaches and consultants will find inspiring examples of the lightness and simplicity, variety and flexibility that is the solution focused process. “This is a book about organisational change. [...] The solution focused approach came to the organisational change world from the therapy room. It is a very specific approach, devised in the mid to late 1980s as part of the interactional brief therapy tradition by Steve de Shazer, Insoo Kim Berg, their colleagues at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee and others. It’s not (even if it sometimes looks like it) about being positive. It’s not about looking on the bright side. It’s not even about finding solutions. In the interactional tradition, we look for the ways in which meanings are continually created, moulded and evolved in everyday conversation. An ‘organisation’ is not really as solid as it sounds – it is a group of people engaged in organising, which is a continuous process (even if things seem very stuck at a particular point). By changing the conversations, the questions, the responses, we cannot but change the organisation. [...] This book is the latest collection of SF cases, following on from 2007’s Solution Focus Working These books are treasure troves of ideas for the seeker with some time and patience. They are not quick-fire checklists. Treat this book as a starting point for developing your own work and practice.” – Mark McKergow

Book excerpt: From April through December of 1945, ten of Nazi Germany's greatest nuclear physicists were detained by Allied military and intelligence services in a kind of gilded cage at Farm Hall, an English country manor near Cambridge. The physicists knew the Reich had failed to develop an atomic bomb, and they soon learned, from a BBC radio report on August 6, that the Allies had succeeded in their own efforts to create such a weapon. But what they did not know was that many of their meetings and private conversations were being monitored and recorded by British agents. This book contains the complete collection of transcripts that were made from these secret recordings, providing an unprecedented view of how the German scientists, including two Nobel Laureates, thought and spoke about their roles during the war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reverence for J. S. Bach's music and its towering presence in our cultural memory have long affected how people hear his works. In his own time, however, Bach stood as just another figure among a number of composers, many of them more popular with the music-loving public. Eschewing the great composer style of music history, Andrew Talle takes us on a journey that looks at how ordinary people made music in Bach's Germany. Talle focuses in particular on the culture of keyboard playing as lived in public and private. As he ranges through a wealth of documents, instruments, diaries, account ledgers, and works of art, Talle brings a fascinating cast of characters to life. These individuals--amateur and professional performers, patrons, instrument builders, and listeners--inhabited a lost world, and Talle's deft expertise teases out the diverse roles music played in their lives and in their relationships with one another. At the same time, his nuanced re-creation of keyboard playing's social milieu illuminates the era's reception of Bach's immortal works.

Book excerpt: Fully integrating sustainability into a corporate strategy has progressively become the ubiquitous norm. However, designing a credible, effective sustainability strategy still appears to be a challenging task and lacking employee support frequently labels the strategies as insignificant public relations practices. As the awareness for sustainability issues prevails, the call for a substantial paradigm shift in corporate mindsets emerges: For any sustainability strategy to be successful, the affected employees need to be aligned and engaged behind it. Human Resource Development (HRD) as proper training enabler for such strategies offers important voice and expertise to realize the true satisfaction of sustainability ambitions. At the present time of globalization and due to the critical need to consider environmental, social, and financial consequences of business operations, the sustainability movement cannot be considered a passing trend. Since HRD is expected to play a facilitative role in establishing corporate sustainability, this work proposes theoretical approaches linking HRD with sustainability and corporate responsibility. The empirical purpose of this study is to investigate the current engagement of HRD in the field, examining one fundamental question: Assuming that employees are key success factors for sustainability strategies, how can HRD professionals and departments ensure that sustainable behavior will be part of all members of a company? Drawing from qualitative expert interviews with senior HRD managers of large companies that declare explicit commitment to sustainability within different industries, the evidence shows that their engagement still tends to be limited. This research concludes with an argument for greater involvement of HRD in corporate sustainability endeavors and offers suggestions for research and practice towards this end.

Book excerpt: Going against conventional marketing wisdom, Absolute Value reveals what really influences customers today and offers a new framework—the Influence Mix, a totally new way of thinking about consumer decision making and marketing, and about developing more effective business strategies. How people buy things has changed profoundly—yet the fundamental thinking about consumer decision-making and marketing has not. Most marketers still believe that they can shape consumers’ perception and drive their behavior. In this provocative book, Stanford professor Itamar Simonson and bestselling author Emanuel Rosen show why current mantras are losing their relevance. When consumers base their decisions on reviews from other users, easily accessed expert opinions, price comparison apps, and other emerging technologies, everything changes. Absolute Value answers the pressing questions of how to influence customers in this new age. Simonson and Rosen point out the old-school marketing concepts that need to change and explain how a company should design its communication strategy, market research program, and segmentation strategy in the new environment. Filled with deep analysis, case studies, and cutting-edge research, this forward-looking book provides a totally new way of thinking about marketing.

By claiming their power, the three cousins have accidentally opened the gates to the underworld. Now ghouls, hellhounds-and most terrifying of all, the spirits of dark witches known as the Greymalkin Sisters-are hunting and killing young debutante witches for their powers. And, somehow, Emma is connected to the murders...because she keeps finding the bodies. Can the cousins seal the gates before another witch is killed...or even worse, before their new gifts are stripped away?
