Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a British Medical Association Book Award A Brain Pickings Best Science Book of the Year Early birds and night owls are born, not made. Sleep patterns may be the most obvious manifestation of the highly individualized biological clocks we inherit, but these clocks also regulate bodily functions from digestion to hormone levels to cognition. Living at odds with our internal timepieces, Till Roenneberg shows, can make us chronically sleep deprived and more likely to smoke, gain weight, feel depressed, fall ill, and fail geometry. By understanding and respecting our internal time, we can live better. “Internal Time is a cautionary tale—actually a series of 24 tales, not coincidentally. Roenneberg ranges widely from the inner workings of biological rhythms to their social implications, illuminating each scientific tutorial with an anecdote inspired by clinical research...Written with grace and good humor, Internal Time is a serious work of science incorporating the latest research in chronobiology...[A] compelling volume.” —A. Roger Ekirch, Wall Street Journal “This is a fascinating introduction to an important topic, which will appeal to anyone who wishes to delve deep into the world of chronobiology, or simply wonders why they struggle to get a good night’s sleep.” —Richard Wiseman, New Scientist

Book excerpt: What is advertising if not a window on the world? When a leader of one of the world's most acknowledged advertising agencies, Jean-Marie Dru, talks ads, the tale he tells is his own. It is the story of brands such as Absolut, Adidas, Apple, Danone, Michelin, Nissan, Procter & Gamble, and many others with which he has been intimately connected over years. Jet Lagis a journey, taking us from New York to Paris, from Tokyo to LA, and introducing key players like Carlos Ghosn, Edouard Michelin, Steve Jobs, and Muhammad Ali along the way. Dru leads us through some of the best business and advertising stories in the world, spawning an idea a minute as he pleads for a new Age of Imagination. Sudden reversal, unexpected mergers, and the roller coaster of success and failure provide the backdrop for a tale of world business in a globalized culture. Good enough, as the saying goes, is not enough. Enthusiasm is the key.

Book excerpt: From the authors of best-selling Molvana comes another hilarious send-up of the always-culturally sensitive travel guide. Whether you'd prefer to taste the Phaic Tanese dish guoman (a local duck delicacy whereby the bird is plucked, rolled in spices, and slowly roasted over hot coals before being brought to the table and killed), or go brown-water rafting on the mudslides of the heavily deforested jungles of the north, or gain insight into the unusual customs of the Phaic Tanese people (Phaic Tanese men will often touch a blonde-headed child because so doing is believed to bring gold, and will likewise touch the breasts of a blonde-headed woman because so doing is believed to bring pleasure), Jetlag's travel guide is the essential guide for the undiscerning traveler. A fascinating land of contrasts with one foot in the past and another striding determinedly forward, Phaic Tan truly is a nation going in circles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Today is Monday, so this must be Zurich.' For those who travel a lot, the world becomes a steel-and-concrete construct of interchangeable flight crews, hotel rooms, and check-in counters. In this jet-setting life, the most important thing is that the power adapter fits. For Jet Lag, award-winning photographer Chien-Chi Chang (*1961 in Taiwan) has created succinct black-and-white images of globalized disconnect. In these photographs, reality is less a touchstone than a distraction: the crucial space is 'between'. Planes and beds and flickering screens provide the only continuity, and there is little human warmth except the body heat of the passenger in the next seat and the sounds coming through the wall from the adjacent room. Chien-Chi Chang has been a member of Magnum Photos since 2001. His several series about alienation - in mental states, in marriage, in nationality - have been exhibited throughout the world, creating a sensation in 2001 and 2009 at the Venice Biennale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Jet lag is a momentary condition resulting from the human body and its inner clock being pitched against the time-leaping effects of modern aviation. But more than that, it is a situation that explains time, technology, and the human body. Jet lag epitomizes the accelerated world we live in. It makes the speed and discomfort of globalization tangible on a personal level. Tracing physiological, temporal, technological, and cultural meanings, Christopher J. Lee's Jet Lag ponders our intrinsic human limits in the face of modern innovation, revealing the latent costs of global cosmopolitanism today. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments play a major role in the development process, and constantly introduce reforms and policies to achieve developmental objectives. Many of these interventions have limited impact, however; schools get built but children don't learn, IT systems are introduced but not used, plans are written but not implemented. These achievement deficiencies reveal gaps in capabilities, and weaknesses in the process of building state capability. This book addresses these weaknesses and gaps. It starts by providing evidence of the capability shortfalls that currently exist in many countries, showing that many governments lack basic capacities even after decades of reforms and capacity building efforts. The book then analyses this evidence, identifying capability traps that hold many governments back - particularly related to isomorphic mimicry (where governments copy best practice solutions from other countries that make them look more capable even if they are not more capable) and premature load bearing (where governments adopt new mechanisms that they cannot actually make work, given weak extant capacities). The book then describes a process that governments can use to escape these capability traps. Called PDIA (problem driven iterative adaptation), this process empowers people working in governments to find and fit solutions to the problems they face. The discussion about this process is structured in a practical manner so that readers can actually apply tools and ideas to the capability challenges they face in their own contexts. These applications will help readers devise policies and reforms that have more impact than those of the past.

Book excerpt: SCMS Award Winner "Best Edited Collection" The standard analytical category of "national cinema" has increasingly been called into question by the category of the "transnational." This anthology examines the premises and consequences of the coexistence of these two categories and the parameters of historiographical approaches that cross the borders of nation-states. The three sections of World Cinemas, Transnational Perspectives cover the geopolitical imaginary, transnational cinematic institutions, and the uneven flow of words and images.
